Hunting doves with a .410 and 28 gauge shotgun can be one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences a wing shooter can ever imagine. The .410 and 28 gauge is a smaller gauge shotgun compared to the more common 12 or 20 gauge shotguns, so it's essential to adapt your approach and expectations accordingly. Here are some tips for going out for a solo dove hunt with a .410 or 28 gauge shotgun:
1: Ammunition Selection: Use the appropriate ammunition for a .410 or 28 gauge shotgun, typically #7.5 or #8 shot for doves. Make sure you have enough shells with you for the hunt.
2: Practice Shooting: Spend time at a shooting range to practice your aim and shooting accuracy with your .410or 28 gauge shotgun. Doves can be challenging targets due to their small size and fast, erratic flight patterns. I've found the lower speeds of 410 and 28 gauge shot shells will make a huge difference in the amount of lead that you need to successfully shoot doves.
3: Patience: Be patient and selective when taking shots. Wait for the dove to be within a reasonable range and in a clear, safe shooting position. The .410 and 28 gauge has a shorter effective range compared to larger shotguns, so it's important to get closer to your target. Typically within 30-40 yards for most hunters.
4: Shot Placement: Be sure to lead the bird and follow through with your swing. Remember, your goal is to shoot the dove in the head and neck area to increase your chances of a clean, ethical kill.
5: Scouting: Scout the hunting area in advance to identify dove flight patterns, feeding areas, and roosting spots. This will help you choose the best location for your hunt. We hunt birds when they are coming out to the fields to get grub, but another effective are to hunt is the water source. We typically won't hunt the roosting spots to save the birds and give them a sanctuary.
6: Early Start: Doves are often most active during the early morning and late afternoon, so plan your hunt accordingly. In our area, we've found that the birds movements are best in the afternoon, so we try to focus on hunting them from 2:30 PM and on.
7: Minimal Movement: Doves have sharp eyesight and can spot movement easily. Stay as still as possible and avoid sudden movements. Once the bird is in range, pull up slowly and make a calm and efficient move to the bird without rushing.
8: Safety: Always follow firearm safety rules and best practices when using your .410 and 28 gauge shotgun. Be aware of your surroundings and the direction of your shots.
9: Respect Wildlife and Property: Hunt ethically and responsibly, respecting wildlife and the landowner's property where you are hunting.
Always clean up trash and empty hulls when you're done hunting.
10: Stay Hydrated: Bring plenty of water, especially if you'll be out in the field for an extended period.Dove hunting usually happens in warm to hot weather, so plan accordingly and don't be afraid to head back to the truck for a while to cool down.
