We are Corrin and Paul and we travel Europe in our Motorhome with our two intrepid travel hounds Dolly and Pippa!
At the moment while we wait for our schengen allowance to reset we have taken a trip in the UK to uncover the costs of motorhoming in the UK.
This week we take the plunge and get out park4nights in the hunt for a FREE park up in West Wales, do they exist? Will we be welcome?
We show you what happened and Paul gives his thoughts on wild camping/park ups in the UK

I totally agree we need more affordable pitch ups for Motorhomes. In this climate I wouldn’t park up in isolated places. As you say £10 for peace of mind is worth it to stay safe.

Hi guys, this does happen in Scotland. In Glasgow we have a name for these people we call them Ned’s ( non educated delinquents) the same people that don’t use bins. What we do when wild camping is travel outside of Ned’s reach,somewhere out in the middle of nowhere usually off a dead-end road so there is no passing traffic and far enough away from civilisation that the Ned’s can’t be bothered to travel that far. Keep up the great work,we appreciate your honesty 😊.cheers James

Another very informative vlog guys, I wish I could say that I was surprised at the disruption you encountered but for me it sums up the UK in this day and age. Even down here in sleepy Devon the youth, or a very large section of the local youth, are completely out of control., I'm afraid to say that the feral amongst us have caught onto the fact that UK policing has been so damaged over the last decade that youths are free to cause havoc at will.

i think you are brave driving around staying in various spots like you do. i'm an old motorcyclist in my 70's who lives in the middle of the uk to the point where no one coast, east, west or south is especially nearer, over the years i've done lots of ride outs, sometimes well over 500 miles in a day but now i tend to stay at home haha, just too many disappointing places and ever more crowded roads. There are gold nuggets but so much tiresome and dangerous clag to wade through to get there even though of course i can filter on a motorcycle to some extent. Sometimes i do a b and b stopover but not often, they aren't always that peaceful.

the bigger mileages (motorbikes can get through traffic better especially any hold ups) were a few yrs ago now when i would get up early and beat the morning rush then return some period in the small hours, perhaps not till six in the morning as i did once or twice although of course this is only possible in the summer around the longest day. The only real worry was petrol as garages can close like shops do. one time i got lost in a forest running low and eventually came across a garage, about to close, had i missed that i would have been sleeping by the forecourt until it opened. so you can still have 'fun' in the uk ha-ha.@@redsgotravels

Oh dear, it’s so very sad isn’t it? We are at times actually despairing at the state of the UK and the lack of hospitality, wherever you go in a campervan or motorhome. Why do so many places, banned overnight parking like to say they could be earning extra income? Travelling on the continent always seems to be so much more welcoming and perhaps, one day, the UK might wake up to this and do something about it, but I’m not gonna hold my breath. Great video, looking forward to more, all the best, Zoe and Malish.

I have been full time off grid for over 15 years, I never pay to park and I can count on one hand the number of times I have had issues with boy racers or idiots. Don't be worried about wild camping, the more you do it the more comfortable you will feel. I agree the continent is far better for facilities and I completely avoid places which do not welcome me. Places like the Lakes, Wales, and Cornwall. I also avoid all the town's who want me to pay to enter. I will spend my money where I am welcome.

@@redsgotravels France obviously is the best with almost every village providing an Aire often with water and electricity and emptying facilities, generally free or for a few Euros. Spain is good but not quite as good as France but many of the regions are now banning overnight parking on the first line by the sea. But I can generally find good places. But now with Brexit I have been forced to return to the UK and for the past 3 years I have been exploring Scotland which I absolutely love, there are a few towns where overnight parking is a problem, but I avoid those. And find the most hospitable areas seem to be the south west and west coast and the Isle of Arran being my favourite. The more you wild camp the more relaxed you will become. Using park4night will help you find good recommendations and you will more likely find a couple of other campers there for company which is always comforting.

Some of the comments are a little harsh on the youngsters, without considering the real facts. They didn't touch the van or confront the occupants. They revved their engines and honked their horns and were perhaps a little boisterous. Maybe it is their regular little meeting place and, let's remember, it is THEIR local area. What was the thing about 'casting the first stone'?

For satnav I use google and I follow the route once it goes off the A roads looking at them with streetview. Any road that looks too narrow when I'm driving I just don't go up it, find an alternative road or destination! I've done the NC500 only using campsites every 3rd day for the facilities. There were two of us, small camper conversions but obviously campers, didn'thave any problems. This year's touir was in France for 2 weeks, used on campsite's facilities (waste dump and 2 showers 6 euro) and a Municiple campsite with all facilities, 16 Euros. It seems much easier in France had one night with a car arriving & playing loud music, lasted about 10 minutes then went away. The worst night was at a park up near a town where they had a 'music' festival on with loud music until 3 am. Didn't realize that was going to happen otherwise we would have stayed elsewhere. So many quiet rural parkups in France and the locals were really friendly!

Read the SOAC , Scottish Outdoor Access Code , wild camping specifically refers to non motorised camping , if you are in a motor caravan use a campsite , an aire, or authorised area for motor caravans . Scotland has become overwhelmed with the number of motor caravans , parking on private land , and folk are getting fed up with it , by all means park where you are allowed to park , it might cost you a tenner. I suspect that motor caravans are going to see much more of this .

Thanks guys, I have to agree with you both, The UK has a different culture when it comes to camping cars. So my view has not changed in regards to taking my camping car to the UK, I'll stay in France and Mainland Europe. Things like your experience when wild camping do happen in Europe, You tend to get a gut feeling over time, I always turn up in the day and walk around the area, See how much litter there is, what type of litter, any wheel skid marks, can the van be seen from the road, how far is the nearest town or village etc (wild camping) The trouble with the UK is to many people mostly down the bottom part of the UK, The less people the better things get. The wife and I live in central part of France which has a round 4 people per square km, so you would have to be lucky to see many people in the day let alone the night.🙂 I have a basic Garmin not the camping car model,, but just except I have to do a bit of planning the night before, I tend to have a look at my map of France just to check the route out and sometimes check out Google earth Street view if possible, a few times I have changed the route when doing this. Thanks again, really interesting.

Wales don't like campers of any kind. They are miserable so and so's. Scotland is better but we were hassled there a time or two, once all night! The increase in this way of life irritates people. We have been full time 3 years and definately seen an increase in this behaviour. It was ok when there were fewer of us but it only seems like there is not going to be a change in that so we have to do battle. Get cameras fitted to the front, sides and rear amd you can watch comfortably from inside whats occuring outside. And always be ready to drive away if you need to. I think part of the issue in the UK is landowners and people who have large carparks are worried about gypsies, moving onto their land, making a mess, leaving a load of rubbish, making a living via somewhat dubious means whilst in the area and refusing to leave. It can be VERY difficult for landowners to remove trespassers like this. It can take months or even years and prevent someone from using their own land to do something else they had plans for. I'm not saying the reputation is fair, but a fear of the 'travelling community' setting up camp on your land has been a legitimate fear for UK landowners for a long time. I don't know if the same sort of thing exists in Europe, if it does I've never heard of it. Really, there are some fantastic spots in the British countryside that would be perfect for stopovers. I was walking the dog past the entrance to the old Blue John Mine in the Peak District where a section of road has collapes due to a landslide. Where the dead end due to the landslide is, there were about a dozen people with campers, vans and caravans parked up for the night. They were all quite a friendly bunch and just seemed to be having a nice time. The only minor quibble one might have is when one guy's dog was off-lead and proceeded to try and hump our Labrador! I actually found it quite amusing and don't think he was traumatised by it, he mainly looked bemused and confused! We should have more areas in the country side for park ups.
@redsgotravels
@redsgotravels 10 месяцев назад
Some very interesting points that make a lot of sense for sure, I think smaller sites, rugby clubs etc may possibly have an easier time in attracting paying visitors, certainly in Europe it’s very easy to find park ups, sometimes with free ehu , water and waste facilities, the uk is a bit behind, would be nice if we caught up, but sadly I don’t think it’ll happen anytime soon ! Lucky to be in Sweden. Wild camping is not unusual. Not to save money, although that’s a nice side effect, but to stay somewhere fantastic. Fish by a lake, walk along a long beach etc. some places it’s rare, mainly high traffic tourist areas where the roads would be jammed, or views spoilt for others. Surprised more pubs don’t do buy a meal, stay for free. But also the boy racers would have loved to chat to you about their car. They go up the mountain to be considerate to people in town 😎there are idiots around but not everyone.

Not really sure I see the problem. They were not aggressive towards you and didn't cause you any damage. They had as much right to be there as you did. I do agree about the benefit of more aires though. Where I live in Northern Scotland (where the rules are the same as Wales incidentally), the number of aires is gradually increasing to meet demand. Some of these are private landowners' initiatives and some from local community councils. There are a few popping up using ANPR technology, where you book online, approach the barrier which automatically opens, and you're free to come and go as you please for the duration of your booking.

If you want to hire a boat on the French canals the youth problem is terrible in many mooring places. They will board your boat, loosen your ropes or even undo them completely. All night noise, booze, drugs, girls, fights, anything goes, in big towns or wild mooring, happens everywhere. In a major town on the official moorings we had to call the gendarmes to report a knife attack on a youngster by an unruly mob right in front of our boat. And very often where there is a marina to moor for the night you may see any number of motorhomes parked up as well. I do agree the French particularly have a different attitude to motorhomes than in the UK, but the anti-social behaviour of many French youngsters is getting out of hand. I wouldn't wild camp in France anymore in our motorhome either.

Wow we were so shocked to read this, and saddened. So sorry to hear that the antisocial behaviour that we see everywhere in the UK is spreading

We experienced bad behaviour on a campsite in France back in the 90’s. It’s not new. We just need to pick our places carefully. Anti social behaviour the world over.

There's worse...in 2010 or so access to all the aires on the approach to Calais were closed by the French police because of the growing migrant problem. Action was taken as a number of motorhomers had experienced problems of interference from migrants- to my certain knowledge two motorhome occupants were gassed while they were sleeping and robbed of all their valuables. Fortunately they survived but didn't have a clue about what had happened to them. The anti-social behaviour in France from youngsters started to become noticeable around 2008, too much time on their hands, too much disposable income, the rapid growtg of social media ebabling them to organise at short notice and

It was a sample trip covering a few options, and spot on, wouldn’t do it again, we will stick with paid sites in the uk, but in Europe , carry on with the free sites, the uk does have a problem 👍

I’d say you just picked a bad spot. Way too open on a road where the boy/girl racers like to hang out. You stood out like a sore thumb I’m afraid 😏

The fact many people in the UK seem able to afford £60k+ motorhomes, and choose to ape low budget van lifers, by parking up at the side of the road, is certainly going to attract the attention of the types, who are filming their attacks on well off motorhome types, and putting them on social media. Must be brave to risk being attacked miles from anywhere, and I guess the trend for the videos, has now made this far more likely?

Thanks for your comment , much appreciated, yes it’s certainly questionable about the behaviours of some motor-homers and those that have a dim view of us motor homers, the uk is not as receptive as many of the countries we’ve been to, hope you enjoyed the video and thanks for stopping by !

@@redsgotravels You certainly have guts to put yourself in harms way! I get the feeling that overnighting in any sort of vehicle, is soon going to be restricted to official licensed sites? Concern about the numbers choosing to live in vehicles full time, is the reason for likely new legislation, as those in vehicles are obviously much harder to control, than anyone living conventionally.

Plus the fact that most motorhome drivers don’t know how to use their mirrors and don’t pull in to let the vehicles behind pass. Maybe one in ten do.
