Love your makeshift maternity ward. Precious little lambs! 🐑
@loboalamo

We raised sheep and it definitely iss a challenge to keep the multiples well and thrifty. If you add a row of straw bales next to the open end of the sheep shed and block the weather they may gain strength. Little lambs dont do well in draft. The bonus part is the warm sun coming in. Success.😊 Lambing and calving and foaling are the best times on the farm, kids of all ages love it. 🐂🐎🐑🐖🐄🐐🐣🐇🦃

Same thing happened to us. Woke up on the 10th to a new calf. It's our first born on the homestead. All that prepping and stressing like new parents ready to jump in and help for naught, ha ha.Louise (the cow) is a great mama and it's a girl!

Thank you for the fantastic T Shirt, it was a lovely surprise to receive it today, the picture is fab, makes me smile that you two are together on it. So miss raising sheep with my mom and dad. Doug, one thing that worked for us trying to get a ewe to take her lamb that she would reject, or to get her to adopt someone elses lamb is to put a dab of vicks on her nose. Doesn't always work, but has at times. At the time we were raising them, we had 200 breeding ewes. Horned Dorset's and Suffolk. What was nice about that combination was we could get 2 lamb crops a year. Excited to watch these labs grow. Blessings, Jim

I just learned something. Cow will do that too. We always say that when one of the cows has a calf (in the winter) they always pick the worst day. It can be pretty and sunny and they wait until it turns bad and cold to have their calf. I never knew it was the barometric pressure change. Now I know. Great information Doug.

Hi again. Good job! Wow I'm smiling and shaking my head as this brings back a flood of memories!!! Those darn sheep were way more labor intensive than our show horses!!! But little lambs r sooo fun! The hay thing is perfect and actually more perfect than pens anyway because they r comforted by the privacy. Most of ours had triplets all the time and that bottle feeding can be overwhelming so bless your neighbor for taking a couple. Have fun and enjoy!

Thankfully my goats did not kid on Sunday, which was below freezing with freezing drizzle. 1 kidded twins yesterday, much better weather (in the 40's when she went into labor). Waiting on 2 more to kid this week.

If anyone plans to use straw bales for pens please add t-posts are rebars in the ground on both sides to keep the bales from falling over and crushing the lambs. Better yet make some permanent removable panels!

When you have several lambing at once you can actually get a mom of a single to "adopt" one of the triplets. Just give it to the mom you want to adopt it while it still has afterbirth on it. She will lick it and start taking care of it. I have pulled this off before. The lamb does so much better with a Mom than with bottle. Your babies are adorable. Enjoy!

We skated, we have been in the 50's too so I was very worried when we dropped down to 16 degrees and got the second snow of the year. I had just moved them to a new run that morning and was worried the ewe would not use the new shelter. Luckily, the ewe held out and did not lamb.

We had a big barometric pressure change here in Finland and my friend had her sheep give birth to twins last night...there is no doubt that the barometric pressure change is a big factor in when the sheep are being born.

I love y'all's videos. I was just randomly thinking: it's funny how technology, (television and movies), "inspired" people to become "modern" and forget the old ways,... and now, technology, " RU-vid, etc." is being used to turn us back to who we were meant to be. 😊 Thank you for what you two do.

Rebar or fenceposts pushed through the bales help hold them locked together a little more eapecialy if you try to put 3 bales high as a divider. That way if they eat some of the bale wall its less likly to tip over

We raised Sorghum grasses and then had a local processor squeeze the juice out and boil it down into Molasses. It has a high iron content, when a Ewe gave birth I poured a pint onto her oats for a healthier animal, think about the old saying, "Slower than Molasses in Winter", it is. I hated it until I moved the barrels on the backside of the Chimney, one time it worked too good, guess who cleaned up that sticky mess?

Shannon Akins It hurts when her milk fills up. You have to get the milk out when she engorges? It seems like it's painful if you don't help her with the milk. Am I right?
@shannonakins5752
@shannonakins5752 6 лет назад
Honestly, we raised Dorsetts. They were exceptional mothers and almost always produced twins so I don't remember having too many engorged ewes at all. But yes, just like in human mamas, engorgement can be right painful and mastitis is something to watch for. You have a great day!

Doug I work in an OB department at a hospital, and it's true there too because if there is a storm system, a full moon, or a really quick change in the weather the barometric pressure will change and we have an influx of mamas and labor

Arghhh!....Winter lambs are always a trial. I mistakenly 'assumed' a young ram was too young to 'cover' any of our dozen ewes. Fortunately, only 4 dropped singles. No twins or triplets. But those 4 ewes are done for the year and I'm already down 4 lambs over what the older ram would have produced. At 75-100 bucks per at market size, I'm down 3-4 hundred bucks this year before the others even got bred. Lesson learned. Bottle babies are a LOT of work to salvage a minimal return. Well done Doug.

Beautiful sheep and lambs. Also, LOVE your pole barn. Y'all have a nice set up. An old GA farmer once told me: "You breed by the moon, and birth by the storm." Do you breed by the moon, to influence gender and number of young? I use moon phases for breeding my rabbits and for planting. All my root crops are going in today - the last of my potatoes have been sprouting in the bag, so in the ground they go. Thanks for all of the great videos.
