BLTV counts down the top 10 greatest boxers of the 1980's. A special time in the history of the sport that birthed many of all-time great pound for pound legends
The way Mike speaks about Sugar Ray Leonard at the end gives me chills.. Even though Mike is the baddest man on the planet you see how much he loves and respects his idols.
hes right too, i watch ALOT of old fights and SRL... man o man could he throw, and the look of surprise on his opponents face... "how many punches was that?" every goddamn time.
Mike's always acknowledgded that he would have been a nobody, if it wasn't for the fighters who paved the way for him. And obviously the people who directly facilitated his career like Cus and Jim Jacobs. As you say, he truly loves and respects guys like Sugar Ray. Unlike Floyd, a guy like Mike would never claim (today at least) that he was a better fighter than his idols. He might be, but he would never say that. And that's the difference between a man like Mike and a 40 year old child like Floyd. Just to add, Floyd has my full respect as a professional athlete, he is absolutely one of the very best, but I detest his personality and his narcissistic tendencies.
@@kfone1 Dude. Mike Tyson treated women like shit for many years, but the more you know about his rape case, the more it becomes obvious that he never forced himself on Desiree Washington. The number one burden of proof being the fact that she had already falsely accused somebody of rape once before, because her father was an abusive maniac and she didn't want him to know that she'd willingly had sex with him before marriage. Also, that guy was her boyfriend at the time.
Some of us watching since 1970’s all through the late 80’s understood the magnificence of what we were witnessing. Respect to all of those sports gladiators.
That's a very fair list. Fun fact: I used to live in Brockton, MA and would often sit by Marvin Hagler as he rode an MTA bus to and from the gym and talk about everything but boxing. He was just another guy using public transportation. It was really cool.
A cool guy that I am proud to say that I learned about later. Word was that he would do his road work in combat boots; when he was boxing, he stayed training in the barracks.
Tysons eyes are something else, every time I see him I can feel that intensity. Let alone standing right in front of him to fight him. Natural genetics + training + raw drive what a fantastic athlete... I love him for what he achieved and that I get to enjoy his legacy when ever I want to.
The middleweight division during the 80s was blessed by four "Once in a lifetime" fighters. I was honoured to see those fights back then. Marvin Hagler was interviewed once and asked "In your life, who was the most painful puncher?" ..... He said " My Mom!"
BLTV is what made me into a boxing fan back in 2014. I had never seen the sport represented in such a knowledgeable, cool way with high production value. We miss you BLTV!!!
Wow, another clip of Mike Tyson talking to an ATG that almost got me tearing up. Heck all of the entries were well deserved. There's just something about those Sugar Rays...
Im a huge Duran fan so i HATED Leonard, but after watching the podcast with Him , Tyson, and Hearns I got ALMOST nothing but respect for him, He still weak for that Duran bs
What Sal Sanchez accomplished with only 23 years is freaking crazy. Imagine if he lived a little longer, a 28 yo Salvador Sánchez would've been a top 5 all time.
You're right. He perfected training and endurance after the 10 Round decision loss in 1977. He was both an offensive Monster and defensive one too. His opponent had to worry about his punches and counter of their own.
I started watching boxing back when I was young in the 70’s. Watched a lot of great talents over the years. But when Mike Tyson showed up on the scene, things were different. Game changer.
Dude, I love the mixing of these songs with the fight commentary, punching sounds and crowd cheers. If you made a BLTV Training Playlist I'd be playing that on repeat every time I hit the gym.
I can't argue with a single entry on this list. And much love for giving props to Salvador Sanchez and putting the proper respect on Michael Spinks' name.
“Ali got the s**t kicked out of him. Cus was mad… I’d never seen him that angry before,” Tyson recalled. D’Amato called Ali post-fight and put his young protege on the phone with one of his idols. “Don’t worry champ,” Tyson told Ali. “When I get big, I’m going to get him for you.” Mike Tyson
The fact that Roberto Duran a lightweight moving up in weights fought the #1 and #2 of this list and gave them hell of a fights and yet he is not on the list is unbelievable to me... 🤷♂️
@@ronblack4523 DO you understand that he was a lightweight, right?? A lightweight moving up in weights to the welterweight and middleweight division during an really tough era, so of course they beat him, he was supposed to lose but the fact that he managed to compete during that time being just a lightweight is the amazing part... 🤷♂️
I am so proud to say I was around to see ALL of these great fighters in their prime. The exception being Salvador Sanchez who died bef his prime. Great fighters, great fights most bef the PPV era.
Love your channel and all the knowledge you dropped, I basically learned everything and was inspired by you. Amazing to see you come back and see you drop videos whenever!
Holy Cripes!!!! BLTV Extra is back! So awesome to see new videos…thank you! Regarding Holmes, I think a lot of younger people don’t consider his amazing skills during his career due to all of the boxing channels repeatedly showing the Tyson/Holmes fight. They see an older man getting rocked by a younger man who was avenging Ali’s defeat. I’ve rarely seen anyone react to Holmes fights before the Tyson fight.
*Greaat Video and a List brother Much Respect to you for not only making One of the best list but also adding few of the Amazing Boxers who is very unknown, You're a Real Boxing fan and i'm glad that you are back in this Channel can not wait to see more of these videos Keep it up* ✊🏼
Marvelous Marvin Hagler at 2 is so thoroughly well deserved. He was a King and an Ace at what he did and how he did it. The way you spoke about him was very respectful and represented his entry brilliantly. R.I.P To the Marvelous One
Ray is my favorite of all time. It's not about having a perfect record and being untouchable. It's about how you come back from defeat that TRULY defines a real champion. That's where the real measure of a fighter is shown.
Did you completely ignore the master manipulator part of the video? You think waiting for the guy that beat you to get fat then demand an urgent fight just to ran away the whole fight while he’s slow asf is real champion mentality?
@@erikvaldes4293 Welp, this is the single stupidest comment in the history of the world. Time to get off the Internet for a while. Question. Did the coat hanger get all of your brain or just the part that allows for intelligence?
i used to stay up late w my dad and brother back in the day and watch these guys fight. they were bonding moments for us back then. this takes me back. this was boxing's heyday. arguably the best of the best all in one decade. amazing video. thk u.
When Hagler and Sugar Ray fought Lenard was warned more than twenty times by referee to stop holding during the fight. The fight was a split decision going to Lenard, but he never had a point taken away for holding. If he had Hagler would have won. Lenard won the fight only because the corrupt powers that be wanted him too so they could have a rematch, but Hagler didn't want anything to do with it and retired.
I don't know what fight you saw but that is not the way that hagler Leonard fight went. That fight was a dog fight all the way through and Leonard won it by unanimous decision! That was not a split decision. It was unanimous. He literally beat the crap out of haggler when nobody thought he could. Go back into your history banks and pull out the video. You are sadly sadly sadly confused that fight was not as close as people thought sugar Ray Leonard dominated!
Wow! I read your comment again and you are obviously a sugar. Ray Leonard hater because you are wrong on another front as well, it was hegler not Leonard who was being called a lot and warned about holding Leonard. Hagler was stronger, but even towards the end of both of the careers landed was still way way faster and the other way hagler to get in to get a hard punch. What's the hold him you really have got the stop telling lies like this or at least in your head. You think they're true. I was literally at that fight with four family members. So don't tell me that what you're telling people on here is correct because you are dead wrong!!! People like you need to stay away from making comments online because that is just so wrong. If you want to hate a fighter fine but don't make up stories that are not true!
I don't know what fight Geo man saw but he is dead wrong. I was at that fight with four family members and I will tell you that it was hagler, not Leonard, who was being warned about holding. Of their career and all the hagler was stronger. Leonard was still the much faster and much more skilled fighter and Leonard absolutely dominated that fight when no one thought he would have there anyone on. Here the challenge and go back and watch the fight again. Leonard won by unanimous decision. It was not a split decision. It was not close. No one could believe that hagler could not knock out. Leonard Leonard wanted unanimously I repeat over and over again. It was not a battle for a couple of rounds. It looked close but Leonard ran away with that fight very easily. So Mr. Geo man stop telling lies and making up stories that are not true just because you don't like a certain athlete or boxer!
I read your comment Mr g old man one more time because I keep finding so many failures in there that you obviously don't have a clue about anything dealing with boxing because you said that Leonard never lost any points for holding?? Get educated because they do not take points away for holding ever in boxing! When someone holds. Only thing referee does is wait to see how long they're going to hold on and then he separates them and tells him not to hold which even saying that to the boxers is also very rare. Points are never ever supposed to be taking away for holding Jesus Christ. How can you be on here? Commenting?
M I'm sorry that I cannot stop commenting because so many things you said are so wrong. I just replayed the fight very quickly and that was barely any holding in that fight at all. It was a clean fight and hagley gave him a run for it during the middle around but overall cigarette lantern dominated. I will not say that enough sugar lander dominate the fight. Hagler had no speed. He only had power and both guys are bruised up which coincidentally nobody and I mean absolutely nobody in the history of hagler's career ever gave that guy and not on his eye like Leonard Dave to him. But he also gave Leonard a pretty nice shiner as well
I had once talked to Hagler who stated the hardest hitting fighter was Lamont Lovelady. Lamont was a very modest person after his boxing career. He stated he hit Hagler so hard he broke his hand on him. And Hagler gave Lamont that credit. Lamont was never the same fighter after the Hagler fight, but he became a plumber and a Des Moines firefighter and was as gentle as they get. It was not uncommon to see him running every morning before and after work. 13 years older than me and he still worked circles around me in his 60’s.
Bro does this mean your back?? We’ve been spoiled by 2 videos so I think I can speak for everyone when I say that we hope you are 🎉🎉🎉 keep em coming bro
WOOO love it, spicy and controversial but hard to argue against. My one and two are Tyson and Hagler, depends on my mood. Watching anyone try to punch Hagler was like watching someone try to punch a bronze statue, dude just never gave an inch and his style was insane, stepping into southpaw and back into orthodox with a one-two cross combo that NO ONE else has. Meanwhile I think 1988 Mike Tyson beats everyone in history. Literally, put your best Mongol wrestler or baddest Wudan monk ever, Tyson is knocking that fool into the sky. P.S. I also want to say, seeing Tyson emotional credit Leonard as source of deep, personal inspiration, while holding an unlit joint in his hand, it makes me grateful to have lived to see these times.
@@SpannerzIsHappy You know what? You're probably right now that I think about it. Foreman wouldn't manhandle Tyson the way he did Frazier, but it'd be the same approach, right? And Foreman was definitely long and strong enough to keep Tyson from getting in close. Good point, I think I lose this one!
@@nucklechutz9933 i don't think it would be as heavy a beat down as the Frazier fight thats for sure. But I think either version of George was made for Tyson. Ain't no way Tyson knocks him out
Good video but it's daft not having Tyson as No.1 for the 1980s. I know you based it on resume, but his resume was still top class and severely underrated. He dominated for 4 years and is an icon. Best HW ever for the speed-power combination.
Spinks beating Holmes is actually very impressive even a 40 year old Holmes gave problems to prime Holyfield and that other dude that knocked out Tommy Morrison
Holmes was actually 42 when he beat Mercer. Years later, Mercer would give a prime Lennox Lewis one of the toughest fights of his career. Holmes is top 3 all time.
I am so sick of of people not giving Roy Jones Jr. his props. The man arguable won every round for over a decade! The only boxer not to even be hit in a round! Respect that man!
Sugar Ray Leonard was the undisputed prettiest boxer that ever put on a pair of boxing gloves. His style was like Michael Tyson, it set him apart from all others in the sport. Everyone enjoyed watching him box his way to fame. No other boxer had the crisma Sugar Ray had in the ring. He was tirelessly relentless to his apontents. He was a pleasure to watch.
The same sugar ray that ran from hagler the whole fight except for when he was holding which he got like some 20 warnings but never had a point deducted smfh, the bias I see from the people who watched sugar ray hold and run in one fight more than Floyd did his whole career but yet you guys are always quick to say Floyd runs 😂😂😂😂
Excellent choice of fighters.Even without Muhammad Ali who inspired some of the greatest of these fighters.Hagler,Hearns,Tyson,Spinks,Leonard it’s just amazing the standards they set.How tough was Marvin Hagler,How powerful was Thomas Hearns,How fast was Sugar Ray Leonard, how potent, and capable was Tyson,a complete package. It was particularly moving to hear Mike Tyson talk about Sugar Ray Leonard, especially with Leonard there. It was a nice little touch to have Errol Spence acknowledge Sugar Ray Leonard right at the very end.
I have very little interest in boxing and the fighters that you cover, but your vids are so good, i watch them all. Great quality and informative videos, thanks
Thank you so much for the video BLTV, I love your content so fucking much. It's the best channel on youtube, I spend hundreds of hours a month on youtube!
