WE WON | Nintendo Direct 9/14/23 Discussion 

This direct 100% gave me the ‘we are getting close to a new console’ vibe.

I think the most interesting thing that this Direct showed us is that almost EVERYTHING that Nintendo themselves is putting out is a remaster or remake of some kind, it really feels like they’re saving most of their biggest hitters for their next console and riding out the rest of the Switch with these older games

What’s really telling is that TTYD was the “And finally…” reveal. This segment of the direct was typically been reserved for the big hitters. TOTK and Wonder occupied that spot recently. So they know. Somebody at Nintendo knows. And they know it’s specifically this Paper Mario game, not the first one (full respect to PM1 of course), is the one the masses are after. That fact alone is huge and worthy of discussion.

Princess Peach Showtime is like a combination of Kirby's abilities, Yoshi level design, and Barbie's career aspirations.

Big wins today. Here's hoping TTYD remake sells well and shows Nintendo that people still want these games!

I admit that I am curious how "Princess Peach Showtime" will impact Peach's future movesets in Super Smash Bros.

As an F-Zero fan, I think 99 is pretty cool. The game plays a bit more like X and GX than the original, and the new mechanics and online shows that they did some REAL thinking about F-Zero. Not just "let's port over another game" but "what new stuff can we do with F-Zero?" Which is EXCITING. I've heard a lot of people are playing so here's hoping they see the interest the community has

Once again, I know that Arlo is happy when he sounds completely high out of his mind like he's floating by a different planets in Alpha centauri.

As a Bug Fables fan, it's gonna be cool getting around to playing the game that influenced it.

I literally thought this wasn't possible. I always thought TTYD was too dark for what current-day Nintendo wants for Mario's image (e.g. the noose in Rogueport), and I had simply accepted that my favorite game of all time would stay trapped on the Gamecube, never to be acknowledged by Nintendo again. And yet, against all odds, we got a remake. And not just a remake, but an incredibly faithful, gorgeous remake. I totally would've expected them to sanitize it, scrub it of any darker themes, make it more thematically relevant to Origami King, etc., but they didn't, all the way down to removing the freaking white outline on the characters. This is genuinely one of the only announcements that could've topped Pikmin 4 for me, AND WE GOT THEM BOTH IN THE SAME YEAR!

The problem with the later Mario vs Donkey Kong games is that they went from the puzzle platformer genre to... something that plays like Lemmings after the first (technically second) game, so a return to the basics feels like a breath of fresh air (even if it's through a remake). That, and the original GBA game used a ton of pre-rendered graphics like the DKC trilogy, so the remake going full 3D is in hindsight a genius move.

Arlo's entire career has led to this moment. The We've been waiting so long for _The Thousand Year Door_ to be on the Switch, and Nintendo not only delivered, but surpassed our expectations with a full blown remake. I was in joyful disbelief too.

The problem with the original Tomb Raider games is the levels are built around a rigid square system that makes it so jumping distances, etc., are consistent throughout the game, but it makes it hard to rebuild the levels into something that looks more natural and organic if they are keeping the same tank control gameplay. Personally, I would like to see remakes of the original TRs that are as faithful as possible but without the frustrating tank controls.

this direct is like watching your grandma move into a nursing home, you know the end is near but hey it was a pretty nice nursing home at least.

Arlo, I'm right there with you, I was FLOORED by TTYD. At the end of my screaming I ended staring to the sky questioning reality and if all this really happened. It's been 20 years!

It is important to note that Mario vs Donkey Kong went in a completely different direction after the first game, it went from a puzzle platformer that was a spiritual successor to Donkey Kong on the Game Boy to a Lemmings-esque puzzle game where you remotely controlled Mini-Marios for the sequel, and it pretty much never went back to the old style of gameplay after that. I was never a fan of the new direction, so I'm very happy to see a return to the old style, even if only in the form of a remake.

Honestly, the Side Order trailer was all I needed from the direct. It is all so mysterious, and it looks like they are trying a new single player formula! The reveal of Dedf1sh (the green octoling who is, as I understand it, the canon composer of Octo Expansion music) was also amazing.

Arlo I genuinely feel like your channel has come full circle after today. You won. Sure Metroid Prime 4 may not be out for another decade but TTYD and Paper Mario Color Splash discussion is what made your channel blow up and now we are finally getting a return to form Paper Mario with the old battle system after all these years, not even to mention Pikmin 4 Im happy for ya!

The Sora amiibo is worth considering if only because everyone was sure Disney would make this impossible. And hey, amiibo still going strong!

F-Zero 99 is likely testing waters. If there's enough/prolonged interest...we may yet get a new F-Zero

I only relatively recently got into F Zero so maybe my opinion is kinda skewed, but F Zero 99 makes me so happy. Just the fact that Nintendo is willing to use the IP again outside of Smash says so much. I've played like 4 hours of it and It's honestly a blast to just play F Zero online. Hopefully if a lot of people play this, it could be a sign for Nintendo to try something bigger.

I've never played Paper Mario TTYD, but your excitement for Pikmin got me ro play that, and that was an awesome game so I'll be giving this one a go!

TTYD , I was so so happy!! A part of my childhood being brought back to life in a way to make it culturally relevant for a whole new generation of people! I hope the game do well, I feel it could make Nintendo bring back the old formula. I also hope they add extra post game stuff too!

what youre missing is that all the other Mario vs Donkey Kong games have completely different gameplay, so it's actually quite exciting to have the good version of the series back.

All 4 Pikmins, Metroid Dread, AND TTYD remake. Man, you cannot stop winning. The only thing left on that proverbial wishlist is Metroid Prime 4.

I don't get why people would think F-Zero 99 is a slap in the face? It actually looks really fun, finally giving the first game multiplayer and the 99 racers thing is totally appropriate. In the original there were always these extra racers that were sorta placed almost randomly as obstacles it felt like, now they're all people. The core gameplay is still there but with a really fun and fitting twist. This isn't like a Paper Mario situation where they're reinventing the wheel. Plus it's free to online members? So weird.

some info on Mario V. DK: The original game on gameboy didn't really have much to do with the minis at all. It was a Mario take on puzzle platformers, and was really good. the minis became a central part of the series in the move to the DS, as they wanted to take advantage of the touch screen. The series has focused on the minis ever since. A lot of fans of the originals didn't like the direction the series went, so a remake of the original is pretty hype. this is the Mario v. DK equivalent of the 1000 year door remake.

Much as I love the ports, seeing Metroid Prime and TTYD makes me wish Pikmin 1+2 got the same visual upgrades.

Seeing Trace Memory made me really want Hotel Dusk to get the same treatment.

Ingrates: F-Zero 99 is a slap to the face. Real fans: If this gets played enough, we'll probably get a new F-Zero.

I'm excited Spy × Family is getting a game of any kind. I didn't expect that to come. It didn't look like it will necessarily take full advantage of the franchise by having any Spy and Assailant action stuff in it or even give us a deeper look at the world's mythos and plot.... but even just a nice little slice of life Sims game where the goal is make Anya go be cute doing fun stuff for her journal is a good way to tide me over while I wait for Spy × Family season 2.

F-Zero kinda done dirty though. Hope it gets more mainstream attention, and a sequel or gx remaster with either an online mp, and/or track Editor.

So I have a seven year old daughter who loves adventure and fashion and video games and performing. Also, her birthday is in March. It's like the Princess Peach Showtime game was made for her.

I'm sad Side Order got slept on by a number of reactions I saw. But the people who are really excited for it are the people who both play Splatoon and care about the lore. Which isn't the biggest group compared to the larger Nintendo fan base.

Paper Mario: TTYD is my all time favorite Mario game, and in my top 5 turn based RPGs of all time. I am SO SO HAPPY TODAY!!!

I've spent my whole life listening to Arlo blab about TTYD, and I was convinced I'd have to wait a long time to safe up for an original copy on the GameCube. I'm so glad that's not the case, and the remake looks fantastic! I'm mostly unfamiliar with the plot, so that's even better. A lot of other games looked cool. I'd never heard of Another Code, but I have only heard people saying good things of that remake. Not sure if I would get it, but very interesting for sure.

I'm so excited for Thousand Year Door. The main thing holding me back is that my brother was playing it over Covid and he said he liked it but he got really frustrated by the now-very-outdated saving mechanics. He said the final boss was hard and it was annoying to have to watch the super long cutscene play every single time he died leading up to it. They're obviously going to rectify that and so much more, so I'm very excited to finally get to experience this game and discover what the hype is all about myself!

Princess Peach Showtime looks like Balan Wonderworld done well

Every time I see that book opening or the new logo or hear the new music, I get honest-to-goodness goosebumps. I'm so glad it seems like they kept TTYD pretty much the same as it was. When I first heard, I was so concerned that they might've removed the turn-based combat. Little weird that we're not getting a Paper Mario 64 remake first, but this has always been the fan favorite, so... no complaints, really. I expect it'll sell really well, and hopefully that will open the way for new games in the original gameplay style with the new characters and races and such (and yanno... eventually a remake of 64?)

How you felt about Paper Mario reveal is how I felt about Another Code reveal. Living in the states I played the first so many times on the DS. It's one of my all time favorite games ever, in the top three. I felt like it was a series long forgotten in time. So to see it getting a remake on the switch AND the squeal we never got, it couldn't be real. To me that was the best part of this direct. You didn't mention it in your video, but I am also hype for the Spy X Anya game. I am a fan of the series and the game looks super cute. Like a nice cozy game to play from a stressful day. While I am glad for the Paper Mario reveal, I would of like it it were a bundle with the first. Then again I am bias for the first. I know you can play the first with Nintendo online service, but you could play the old Link's Awakening and they remade that. Overall I think this was a great direct.

Yeah Paper Mario and Funky Kong happened, BUT F-ZEROOO WOOOOOOO!!! Me and the 20 other F-Zero fans are crying with joy 😭 Even tho it's only a 99 game of the first F-Zero, ITS STILL SOMETHING!! Since like the Wii U times I've been waiting for something, just any news, knowing that it isn't likely coming. The most exciting thing about F-Zero 99 is the question why? Why would they suddenly do a F-Zero 99 game. No one asked for it, or even knew to ask for it. So now they have kinda revived the idea of F-Zero. Why?!?!? Maybe they want to remind (and tell people born in the last 20 years) that "Hey, this was also a series", "Maybe you will become a fan now and wait for a new F-Zero game"... In my wildest dreams they will remaster GX, and get people back on the series. Then they could do a new game. Kinda like what they did with Pikmin 3 and 4. Please... oh please...

F-Zero 99 kinda reminds me of the Metroid Prime Federation Force situation, but not as bad, in the sense that it has been nearly 20 years since the last game and Nintendo was tone deaf enough to make F-Zero 99... But... at least it is something. Technically, we got a new F-Zero game... and it ain't bad. The game is actually really fun, and introduces some new mechanics, while remaining faithful to the difficulty and fast gameplay F-Zero is known for. Plus, it is free with the subscription and is a bonus, I guess. It's just that after 20 years, fans get this anticlimax of a game. Here is the silver lining, this game slowly introduces all sorts of newcomers to the intensity of F-Zero, making them interested in the series, basically testing out the waters. That way, when a new F-Zero game potentially comes to Switch, it sells well for the first time ever and the series can finally take off! The reason an F-Zero game might not be too far off is because one, we just got what is essentially a "first time player" F-Zero game, and two, because if we are to believe the leak that said that TTYD is getting remade on to Switch, then we should believe that F-Zero GX should get remade too. That was his claim along with TTYD! It's very exciting to think about! Just imagine a trailer for F-Zero GX starting off with dramatic music saying in text "It's been nearly 20 years..." and then BOOM! Big Blue starts playing! Haha! That's hype!

I'll never understand how the LM games' titles went like this up until now: Luigi's Mansion -> Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon -> Luigi's Mansion 3. Like Nintendo, guys, you could've easily called 3 "Luigi's Mansion: Haunted Hijinks" or something like that. So I guess the Dark Moon is gone from the title now. RIP.

Thoughts on Direct: Always excited for more Splatoon content. Princess Peach Showtime has a lot of potential, love the idea. Tomb Raider trilogy is neat. TTYD had me screaming. I've always heard about how it's the best in the series, but the only Paper Mario I've played is the original, and I love that game. I didn't have a GameCube, and didn't think to try to get it when I got the Wii. So this is my chance to finally play it, and upgraded at that!

If they're going to make us wait until Summer 2024 for Luigi's Mansion 2 HD, the absolute least they could do is make it look as good as Luigi's Mansion 3.

TTYD is one of my favourite games of all time, i was obsessed with it as a kid, and the first like 5 hours are burned into my memory forever lmao. seeing how faithful and perfect this remake looks makes me so happy. i was thinking about replaying TTYD recently, since it's been a few years, but now that this is coming out i have to wait for it

FZero 99 is actually a really nice way to gauge interest for a new one. Which I feel is coming to the Switch 2 (if it has BC for Switch games)

The reaction to this direct had been interesting. Everyone seems to be convinced that since their Fandom got something they are excited about, someone else must be sad. I've seen so many comments that are just, "I'm sorry if you didn't like this direct, but I'm so excited for (thing I'm excited for)." Like, I'm pretty sure everyone is excited for something that is upcoming at this point. I'm mostly a Zelda fan, but TTYD and the new Princess Peach game, etc. Etc.! There is so much to be excited about right now, it's crazy. I just hope that all of these games work on the Switch 2 or whatever they end up calling it.

As a mega Mario fan I am so happy with this direct, after the last two I thought that we weren't getting anything more Mario for the rest of the year and nintendo came in with this absolute beauty of a direct. It feels like the only Mario content the Switch is missing is a Mario & Luigi game and a Mario Sluggers game.

Arlo's chair drumming during the Thousand Year reveal was amazing. For our end, my wife played both Another Code games when they came out and loves them dearly. She was about as loud as you were with Paper Mario when that got revealed. I'm excited for the Splatoon stuff (naturally) and honestly, I enjoyed the Direct. I no longer have an excuse to not play all the Mansion games too XD

Paper Mario thousand year door alone was hype but this section of games looks incredible Just wish kirby air rider was one of the games too. That deserves a remake

As someone who has both TTYD and F-Zero GX in my top 5 games ever, i thought this Direct was pretty darn good!

I don't care for all these remakes (TTYPD, SMRPG, Mario vs DK all meh to me) EXCEPT the Another Code duo. Getting a previously unlocalized game coming overseas is what remakes SHOULD be used for, the Famicom Detective games should've been the start of more to come.

i've been hoping for remasters of tombraider 1/2/3 for over 15 years. i love the controls and the fact that it's not changing the controls is the entire selling point for a lot of classic TR fans. as for how they look, certain things can't change. the levels are designed around the controls. if you change the environments away from being blocks then the control system would no longer work or make sense. i know that these clearly aren't your thing or something that interests you, but there's a lot of classic tombraider fans who have been wanting exactly this for many, many years. this is our thousand year door remake. and we couldn't be happier.

i dont think ill play ttyd or mario rpg cuz im just bad at those games. but i am extremely happy both are being remade. the fans reaally needed it and im very happy for them.

I don't know. How many stars, planets, galaxies, universes, dimensions, realities had to align, in order for a Nintendo direct. On my birthday no less. To have the final reveal. To be my absolute most treasured games. And I am so glad, that when I get to share it to my children, it'll be this remaster.

It really is a great day to be a Paper Mario fan. I genuinely thought I’d never witness anything good about Paper Mario after origami king. I really hope this leads to a return to the classic Paper Mario formula.

This is the year of Arlo without a doubt

Thing I just noticed on the Peach trailer; after the big baddie is introduced Peach is no longer wearing her crown, implying it was stolen. Always had the ideia (call it a headcannon if you like) that her crown was a sort of catalist for her magic powers, and now that it is gone she gets new ones, it makes my gnooging jog a little bit.

I thought the direct was pretty mid and too remake heavy

I LOVE TTYD, but it has a few things that I would like to either see addressed or added/changed, like backtracking the game's biggest issue and needs to be addressed more than anything else! If modern audiences are going to play this game today, they would find that beginning area in Keel Haul Key, the Chapter 4 backtracking, and the Genral White quest to be kinda obnoxious. There is a lack of harder difficulty options. There is this one badge that makes Mario take double damage and make him slower, but there is no bonus effect like more coins or something. How about rather than making a badge that gives no benefits, how about a hard mode, where Mario AND partners take double damage, more tricky enemies, with more health, more aggressive behavior on the overworld, etc. Outside of combat, they can change up overworld puzzles and make them harder! Maybe they can add new bosses to the hard mode and new awards! That would be awesome! This mode can be a serious gamechanger! The game also removed Chuck Quizmo, so there are so many really bad star piece locations. To fix this, I would bring back Chuck, where he would function the exact same way as he did in PM64, but after the 20th quiz, he opens a location on Rougeport where you can grind out the rest of the quizzes all in one location for a price, but you can still occasionally see him in towns for free. The game NEEDS better camera angles that don't make the world look like a set of hallways. The trailer had a few cool new angles, but we don't know for sure. TTYD has so many memorable and interesting locations, it's such a shame that all the camera angles for each of these places look the exact same. This is an issue that has plagued every Paper Mario game (besides Origami King actually), but TTYD is the game where this is the most noticeable, I feel like. The game should also let the player take multiple troubles (side quests) all at once. The fact that you can only do one at a time just perpetuates the issue of constantly backtracking in the game. The game should also reward you for finding multiple recipes, and I feel like there should be multiple cooks throughout the game, so that it's more convenient to interact with the system. I believe partners should maybe have their own separate item inventory. It would add more strategy and you would be able to carry more items! (It would kinda remind me of EarthBound.) But, if every partner had their own inventory instead of a collective inventory, it should be limited to, like, 3-5 items each, so it doesn't break the game too much having, like, 80 items. I think they need to rebalance some of the partners so that they don't have so much HP so that they aren't just meat shields, so let's give the player a consequence for putting the partners in front of Mario. Something I would take from Origami King and Color Splash is the interactive world from those games, where it felt like every little object could be messed with. That was always kinda fun to play with. I also liked how expressive the characters of those games were, giving different facial reactions depending on what they were talking about. In TTYD, characters barely emote. Like, when the mafia find out that their boss is sick in TTYD, they sound worried, but look boring. Let's also make the characters interactive, where you can whack them with your hammer, but also spin at them and ground pound on them, where they each give a separate animation! The trailer made it seem like this was the case, and if it is, that would be so awesome! It would truly make the world feel that much more interactive and fun to be in, and that's very important! There is so much exposition in this game and it can be a little dull. If the characters reacted more to what they were saying, the dialogue would be less dull, but also how about show some more stuff on the screen when they are talking, so that it's more "show, don't tell"! Like, for instance, on the roof in Rogueport, there is a guy that tells you the lore of the game, but it's all a dialogue sequence, how about they turn that into a cut scene! It could be a flashback sequence (think Color Splash I guess). There can be more instance of that too throughout the game I am sure too! In chapter 3, the enemy gauntlet is fun and all, but resting after each battle makes it too easy. If there is a hard mode, they should remove the ability rest maybe, or maybe make each encounter feel like a mini boss. Also, they should tell you what you will encounter beforehand so that you can create a badge setup beforehand. Chapter 5 needs to have a little more action and combat, as all of the meat of gameplay is only as a small section, which is so fun, and I love chapter 5's story, but I when I replay the game, it can get a little dull because I just read the same stuff I read from last time. I have even heard from TTYD fans that this is their least favorite chapter even though they originally loved it. It's sad to hear, but overall, it's not a huge issue and is probably one of the last things I would change about the game. Finally, as a bonus, it would be nice if they added more secrets, badges, optional locations, optional bosses, enemy varieties, hidden challenges, side quests, and references Paper Mario 64 (like every partner from PM64 being hidden somewhere in the game in the post-game) and some more foreshadowing to Super Paper Mario (like TTYD had this toad alluding to the fact that Luigi will be playable and have a significant role in Super Paper Mario, which is mind blowing! They could also reference a TV show called "The Grodus Chronicles being made")! The original TTYD did have all of these things, but if the remake can not only maintain what was there before, but expand it, then I feel like this can be the ultimate Paper Mario game and perhaps one of Nintendo's greatest games of all time!

I feel spoiled getting not just a port of the game but a full blown remake, it's amazing!

Mario vs. Donkey Kong is actually a decent announcement because it's a return to the original game formula all the sequels tossed aside. I'm definitely looking forward to it

lets be honest, if ttyd wasnt there the direct wouldve been really iffy. Though ttyd is a veeeeery persuasive addition, and knowing your opinion of the game made seeing the reveal all the sweeter. It really was just an OK direct, but it's not a big deal given what the lack of stuff suggests. Though they could have definentely used more 3rd party stuff, i would have loved a hi-fi rush port or something! Also, wanted to see more of penny's big breakaway so that was a little disappointing. Overall, SWITCH 2 WHEN NINTENDO LET US KNOW WHATS UP

I think FZero 99 is going to be some underhanded tactic to see how many people would be interested in FZero en masse, and therefore could “likely” be a gateway to a new FZero mainline game.

I think people are undermining just how needed the MvsDK remake is. The original has excellent level design and gameplay, but its presentation is awful. Now that this issue is fixed, this game will benefit immensely from it. This is one of the few modern remakes that feels necessary imo

The F-Zero community is mixed on this from what Im hearing. I am too and while its better than nothing, I am still frustrated that the rumors of an F-Zero GX HD version with online multiplayer turned out to be false (unless the big N is saving it for the new console, and this is a way to gauge fan interest...). Ill still play F-Zero 99, but yeah idk how long it will last.

Princess Peach Showtime looks like a legit game, I was never interested in Super Princess Peach but I kinda like the whole transformation aspect giving her all sorts of different abilities. Fencer Peach looks rad. I don't care much about Tomb Raider, but I am praying to the Elder God that this is leads towards a remaster of the Legacy of Kain series, since I'm pretty sure Square owns both and LoK was always kind of the brother of Tomb Raider. It NEEDS to happen. And...Y'know...I guess that thing at the end was...Pretty OK...

The thing about this other Mario vs donkey kong remake is that donkey Kong on the game boy, and mario vs donkey Kong on the GBA are TOTALLY different games from the mini land mayhem type of games Mario Vs donkey Kong for the GBA is a fantastic totally unique game. It’s a lot of fun and it’s worth giving the original a shot

I am an F-zero fan, and I want to say to other F-zero fans: Try the game!! I was disappointed when I saw it but it's actually so fun. It channels most of the stuff I like about the 3D games while still looking like the old game.

I'm SUPER excited for Princess Peach: Showtime and TTYD. I've wanted to play TTYD for a while because I've heard great things about it, and I really enjoy Super Paper Mario.

I'm honestly really happy with F-ZERO 99 because of how absolutely chaotic it is. I had plenty of fun for the few hours I tried it. F-ZERO (1990) is a really fun game, even as a relatively early racing game. It's just that game, but with 99 players and chaos. To me, that's perfect. An F-ZERO on the next console is an absolute must, though. I don't think it could be on Switch. It's not powerful enough. It needs to have truly good graphics, and F-ZERO has a precedent of being 60FPS, never lower. It's why F-ZERO X looks the way it does. I'm hoping the next console has analogue triggers, since the Switch doesn't, and that would make F-ZERO GX a bad port/remaster, or make the new game control worse overall. F-ZERO 99 has me excited. I think they're putting out a lesser release because they want to make an F-ZERO that's truly boundary pushing for the next console.

Anyone else get excited when they played the Toy Time Galaxy music, only to be disappointed it was a museum and not Galaxy 3? Other than that, great direct!

I would care a LOT more about the Nintendo Museum if Nintendo WASN'T doing it themselves. I want real enthusiasts doing it because they won't censor everything that Nintendo doesn't like.

Tomb Raider being barely remastered is perfect for me. Its easy on the eyes, but still has the feel of the originals. And as someone who has very little experience with the originals... I'll get to feel like I had a pretty similar experience but a bit better. (Who knows, I may even try playing with the the old graphics.) Good point about Trace Memory and those warm cozy pixely DS graphics. There were a good number of those games that just felt special and unique because of the strange new, but limited dual/touch screen hardware. One that comes to mind that I always wanted to play but opted out for some reason, tight budget maybe, was Touch Detective. Got it working on my Mac, so might play it on that, but... not really the same thing is it? Maybe I'll get on DS/3DS sometime. Oh right, so good point about Trace Memory. I think I'll try it, but I understand wanting the original graphics. As for Tomb Raider... just concentrate and learn the controls, its what makes the game exciting!
