Back in the day, they were associated with the devil. In this week's episode of Racked series, History Of, we explore the controversial history of stripes. Before becoming associated with the navy and going mainstream, thanks to Coco Chanel, wearing stripes was considered worthy of death.

Since I started watching youtube when I was about 12 years old, I have never enjoyed any youtube channel as much as I do racked. I was always interested in the sociological and psychological aspect of fashion and am very passionate about learning why fashion shapes us so much as human beings, your channel is doing exaclty that. I really appreciate the effort of taking a unique and more scientific approach to fashion and it is exactly what was missing on this powerful platform. I have spent 3 days binge watching all of the channels video and I loved every single one of them. I want to say that it is very much appreciated, thank you so much.

Lots of patterns before french revolution wore stripes. Look at Marie Antoniete´s period dresses. They became popular because there was better technollogy to print clothes with patterns (it happened too with flowers) In fact, a stripped gown was the very best sign of a supreme dressmaker, because all the stripes were well aligned

stripes were also very popular in the German Renaissance. This video is FULL of exaggerations, assumptions, and misinformation.

I’m here because I wondered about pin stripes and baseball uniforms and suits. What came first? Now I’m onto something cooler. Thank you.

Mmmm sorry but the stripes were also present in the Bourbone dinasty in Spain before the US revolution, that was infact what inspire my Flag (I'm from Argentina), so you maybe missed something along the way.

The whole thing about stripes only being for outcasts everywhere during the entire medieval era up until the US revolution is a gross oversimplification. There are plenty of medieval depictions of respectable people wearing them. Even though stripes became very popular around the time of the US revolution the stigma was broken a long time ago during the renaissance.

So ... why was it ok to wear stripes in the Renaissance, if they were seen as a sign of outcasts between 12th and 18th century? Was it because people back then were just overall crazy hipsters, or for some other strange reason?

This is a highly abbreviated sub-3 minute long video. If they went over every change in the fashion of stripes, it would be days long.
