Montenegrin doesn't really differ from Serbian. I mean, there are certain differences between Serbian and Croatian here and there, but basically they're the same language. But montenegrin doesn't even have that, I mean it's 100% identical to Serbian. Fun fact: before Montenegro became independent there were barely anyone who called themselves "Montenegrin" as a separate ethnicity.

As a Croat who lived and worked in Russia for 18 months and learned russian a little bit, I understand: croatian /serbian/bosnian 100% 70% slovenian because they are neighbours, and have a lot in common with russian, otherwise i wouldn’t understand more then 20% 90% russian 50% polish 40% belarus 30% ukranian 30% czech/slovak 20-25% makedonski/ bulgarian All i wanted to say is that all slavic languages are very similar, and you can learn it very fast if you have an opportunity to live in one of these countries. There must be a reason for all that similarity, and it’s that we are all Slavs. And although I don’t prefer Serbs for what they did I don’t hate them (you don’t need to like your “brother” if he’s an idiot), we all need to stick together otherwise we will lose our identity. The sadest thing is that we need to write each other in english in order to understand each other instead to establish our uniqe language. Slava brothers!

Interesting that you understand 90% of Serbian, I noticed that Bulgarians understand Serbian much better then we Bulgarian. But exposure helps, ai now get Bulgarian much ch better then when I was 1st time in Bulgaria. Czech for us is easier, I can get at least 50% or so, while Slovak for us is quite understandable. Polish is the hardest, written you can get the meaning, but how they pronounce makes it much harder. Overall they say, Bulgarians understand other Slavs well, Slovak is the understandable for most Slavs

@@macakucizmama831 Yep. Not sure why. The 90% apply to me but asked a few other guys from Sofia and they said for them is more like 70% - 75% and a few people from eastern Bulgaria said even as low as 30%. The ancient Macedonian, thracian and Illyrian languages were similar to today’s slavic languages. Heres some examples. See if you other slavic people can understand These are ancient Macedonian words actually found in homers iliad written nearly 3000 years ago. Greeks claim it wasn’t a Greek language but an attic language north of Greece, but the words are obviously Macedonian and like other slavic words I’ve listed them in order of ancient Macedonian, modern Macedonian and then the English translation. Tresi tresi shake Druos drvo wood Luta luta angry female Ode ovde here Ajde ajde come on Pamti pamti remember Eruko Vo raka in hand Arin aren In good health Pechko. Pechi Bake Rechos recheno. said Steno Stenka Groaning Trio Trie To rub Stero Staro Old Vadino Vodi To lead Tieno Tegni Stretch Kudo. Chudo miracle/wonder Ochi Oche Eye Iska Iskra Flame Svekuro svekor. Father n law Svekura svekrva. Mother in law Vestia Nevesta Bride Maya. Majka. Mother thracian, phrygian Illyrian language: Thracian: SERDE GORD, AS BRUZA DADON ZELKIA ANA DZVERI OSTA. Modern Macedonian: SRED GRAD, JAS BRZO DADOV ZELKA NA DZVER USTA. (Translation: At the centre of the city, I quickly gave cabbage to the beast mouth.) here’s another example of the remaining Phrygian glossary (Brygians/Phrygians, another Macedonic tribe; close Thracian neighbours), and the following hypothetical sentences constructed entirely from known Phrygian words, shows again that it’s one and same with modern Macedonian: Phrygian: VONOK, SIT SI? SEST TU IN SUR TO SOK. Modern Macedonian: VNUK, SIT SI? SEDI TUKA I SRKAJ TOJ SOK. (Translation: Nephew, are you satiated? Sit here and sip that juice.)

I'm a Polish native and I found myself falling in love with South-Eastern Asian countries, especially Vietnam, the Philippines, and Thailand (especially the last one)! Your language has beautiful system writing and it just sounds...different than anything else in this world but it's beautiful. "Love of the Siam" is probably my favorite movie of all time, no other movie has affected me as much ever. BL movies your country produces are some kind of escapism for gay people from all around the world, something like this would never be possible in Poland. As of 2023, there was maybe only one gay movie "Płynące Wieżowce" ("Swimming skyscrapers") and it was pretty depressive and shitty. If Thailand is in reality "a land of smile" where there is more liberty to be who you are, then it's tempting to live in such a place.

the matter of understanding other slavic languages is only the matter of getting used to different pronounciation. As a native ukrainian, i perfectly understand belorussian, russian and polish (have been learning it for a few years now, but was an easy challange). slovakian is also relatively easy to understand, so is serbo-croatian (yeah, and bosnian/montenegrian/whatever else). A few years ago I didn't get a word in this language, but after watching some movies and listening to music in serbo-croatian, it's much easier to understand the language spoken by now. The same is with czech, it just requires some time to learn the differences like false friends and accent. However Bulgarian and Macedonian are completely inaudible to me.

As a Ukrainian who knows both Ukrainian and Russian from the early childhood: Russian, Ukrainian -100%; Belorusian - 100% (in this particular case, but in general 85-90%); Polish - 60%; Slovenian, Czesh - 40%; most of South Slavic - 50-60%, except Bulgarian - 80% (surprisingly close to Russian) and Bosnian - 65% (it might be due to the speaker, because it is really similar to the Serbian and Croatian). Interestingly enough, I generally understand most of South Slavic languages better than West Slavic.

This is impression of me as a Serbian speaker (western ijekavian version of the language): South Slavic: I perfectly understood Bosnian and Croatian because they are basically the same language as Serbian. I understood Macedonian and Bulgarian pretty well, while I struggled with Slovenian. East Slavic; While I guess their vocabulary is different, their pronunciation was the same. They all sounded like one language to me and they are all very soft. I picked up like two out of ten words and to my surprise Belarusian was the one I understood the best, followed by Ukrainian and then Russian (I expected it to be the other way around lol) West Slavic: My impression was that they differentiate between each other more than both East and South Slavic languages do though I may be wrong. Polish is the sharpest one, with many S sounds in it. I picked up some words in Polish and Slovakian while I struggled the most with Czech. In general, I understood South Slavic languages very well. Except for Slovenian. West and East Slavic languages were equally hard for me to understand though western pronunciation seem closer to Serbian than Eastern. Polish and Serbian seem to be the most fluent and sharpest Slavic languages, like they cut out all the unnecessary sounds and accents.
