A bolt action Weatherby Mark V Deluxe rifle chambered for the .300 Weatherby Magnum cartridge. Has a Leupold vari-x III 3.5x10x50 scope mounted on it. The 300 weatherby packs quite a punch with a 180 grain bullet at about 3,100 feet per secound and over 3,800 foot pounds of muzzle energy.

Hi Shep, I am impressed you put that many rounds through that rifle. My best friend has one and I have shot it quite a few times and I can guarantee it kicks like a mule on steroids. That is a beautiful set up with the Leupold scope. The Mark V action is excellent although it's a push feed action I wouldn't hesitate to use it as a dangerous game rifle. So true. It has more recoil than the average person can handle. That said, it is one of the most effective all-around rifle calibers. You stood up to the recoil from that beast just fine, Shep. An experienced shooter's ability to roll with the punch always shows. Not often that people get to see what $2000 worth of rifle/scope looks like. btw...were those factory loads, or did you roll your own?
@1957Shep
@1957Shep 10 лет назад
I do reload for that caliber. But if I remember right, those were some factory Remington loads that had been in the back of the ammo cabinet for about 10 years. I got this rifle at an auction about 12 years ago with the scope for $750. Even back then I thought it was just too good of a price to not bid on it. The recoil doesn`t feel that bad. The wide butt stock and recoil pad help a lot on this rifle.

+ImTheWaffleman , to me it looks like he's used to a 90 degree bolt lift and not used to the 56 or 57 degrees of the Weatherby, he seems to be pulling up when the bolt is simply ready to be pulled back. It's not uncommon for people used to conventional bolt lifts to stutter so to speak with a Weatherby at first but once used to these low bolt lifts, they are faster and quicker to get back on target, they are made to easily be activated comfortably from the shoulder. A big plus in some situations.

I found and bought the same model in like new condition in 2018 for only $1,250. It is also a Mark V in .300 Weatherby magnum. It was made by JP Sauer in Germany in 1967. .I always wanted one since 1967. I found and mounted a like new Leupold VX-2, 4 -14 X 40 scope on it. I removed the Weatherby original 4 X scope, also made in Germany. (It is for sale.) I shot just a few times, with factory 180 grain loads. Three holes touching at 100 yards. When time available, I will work up hand loads starting with IMR-7820 powder and Nosler 180 grain Accubond bullets. The barrel has a 1 : 12 inch twist, so it probably will not stabilize bullets over 180 grains. I am content because I also have a Savage Bear Hunter 116 in .338 Winchester magnum which accurately shoots 225 grain Nosler partition bullets. And I have a 7 mm STW rifle with a Hart barrel on a Remington 700 action which puts four Nosler 140 grain Ballistic Tip bullets in one hole at 100 yards. I use IMR-7820 powder for it. It was built by R. Hart.. The recoil is manageable, but I plan to have a R. Hart custom muzzle brake installed. He has built other rifles for me. Many serious hunter friends are devoted exclusive Weatherby fans.

If I go out shooting, I take the camera along, and if there are not many people at the range, I`ll get some of the shooting on camera. If there are several people there, I`ll probably leave the camera in the car. The RU-vid videos are a biproduct of a day at the range, not the reason for a day at the range.

Man, you're burning up some very expensive ammo there; and without any barrel cool down intervals between groups. I own five Weatherby rifles in Wby. Magnum calibers. What were you shooting at Anyway?
@1957Shep

@1957Shep
@1957Shep 3 года назад
Same diameter bullet, but much higher capacity brass loaded to much higher pressures. There are many 30 caliber rifle cartridges that have vastly different levels of power. The 308 Winchester is a midrange cartridge most often loaded with a 150 grain bullet and puts out around 2,800 foot pounds of muzzle energy. The 300 Weatherby is one of the high end 30 calibers. Most often loaded with a 180 grain bullet with around 3,900 foot pounds of muzzle energy. Different loads for either cartridge may be a little lower or higher, but the above is typical. For comparison here are typical muzzle energies for some other popular 30 calibers. 7.62x39 Russian = 1,700 30-30 Winchester = 1,900 300 Savage = 2,400 303 British = 2,700 7.62x51 NATO = 2,700 (This is really the same round as the 308, but military loads tend to be a little lighter than commercial 308) 7.62x54R =3,000 30-06 Springfield = 3,000 300 Winchester = 3,300 300 Remington Ultra-Mag = 4,100

@1957Shep
@1957Shep 10 лет назад
***** Depends. If you try to sell it to a gun dealer, keep in mind that he has to be able to mark it up and make a decent profit on it. Probably 20-30%. For a private party sale, look at what they are selling for on gunbroker www.gunbroker.com/ Keep in mind that asking prices will be high. Look for ones that have actually sold. Your best bet might be to ask a local gun dealer if he will take it on consignment. Most dealers will be willing to take a much smaller chunk of the sale price if they don`t have their own money tied up in it while it`s setting on the rack. You might be well off to sell the rifle and scope separately.

Ronin Williams The 300wby isn't that bad of recoil , but for some reason the 300 h&h kicks your teeth in for being surpassed by performance of the wby. Just my experience with both cartridges.
@craigleibbrand7761
@craigleibbrand7761 2 года назад
@@jamesu223 the 300h×h probably has a large drop in the comb. More likely it was a pre 64 model 70. The stock drops like a cow's face. Felt recoil is significant when the comb hits you in the face.

Let’s be completely honest ..... The recoil on that gun makes it completely unpleasant to fire .. It has so much recoil I won’t even let my older sons shoot mine .. I’ve personally toyed with the idea of having the barrel turned for a muzzle break in hopes of making it a more tame gun to shoot .
@1957Shep
@1957Shep 4 года назад
Recoil is something you learn to handle. Compared to some calibers, the 300 Weatherby isn`t bad at all. Make sure it is always pulled in tight to your shoulder. If you let it build momentum, it will hurt. Don`t fight the recoil too much. Let the muzzle rise and let it push you back.
@craigleibbrand7761
@craigleibbrand7761 2 года назад
You have to protect yourself when you're shooting a 300 Weatherby. I use of past recoil shield on my shoulder, I use ear plugs and muffs and a Bench Master with a 20 pound bag. With all of this I could shoot it accurately all day.
