In a preview of Anthony Mason's "Sunday Morning" interview with the British rock band Led Zeppelin, singer Robert Plant addresses Mason's questions about a possible reunion of the group - recent recipients of the Kennedy Center Honors.
Jimmy would be up for it, John has waggly fingers, Robert never wants to have to sing Stairway to Heaven ever again. There are dozens of clips of interviews with Robert saying why they're not going to reunite... basically boils down to "I don't want to become a Led Zep covers band", which is fair enough. I would though.
@@Head318Hunter Robert Plant has had to answer this question publicly innumerable times, and he gives the same three reasons (the last one in more recent years): 1) Not without Bonzo; too respectful to him and what was... Plant wouldn't touch a single Zep piece in performance for a good 6-7 years after Bohnam died. 2) Musically, he's moved too far away from the material... yes, he takes the skeletal pieces of their work; he's ALWAYS been a covers man. But musically he's approach the material in something he feels better suits his present interests/styles of the time as well as his stage in life. 3) He CAN'T... he may say it in veiled ways, repeatedly referencing his age. But in the ways in which Page and the fans would want him to approach these songs, he simply couldn't do it as a tour night in and night out; he wouldn't be taking care of himself physically.
@@James-nw1oj I totally agree. It is a shame it took Bonzos death to bring an end to Zeppelin. But they were really starting to fall apart. Jimmy for sure! The follow-up concert have been enough. I love them, and I always will.
@@Head318Hunter- More like 50%, but I think it's really his age and also the respect he has for John to not get back together and sing those songs like he used to. Plant isn't young and doesn't pretend to be, that's why he always changes his old songs to what he wants, it's not like he's screeching and preening onstage like a has been. Getting Zeppelin together also means Robert has to sacrifice his vision for what he wants musically, and the guy is way too damn old to do anything he doesn't want to. There's a respect I have for Robert and his integrity but that's just me.
@@Head318Hunter yes it does make sense. hes been there, done that. like the beatles said. why would you want to go back to highschool when you've grown up?it sucks for us but i understand roberts reasoning. you've got all the records and films if you want to listen . its just over
Good Point and i get it, his voice is fading and it's not an easy task of music. Not only that Plant likes to explore new challenges and is probably done with the Zep thing for now.
Here's where you are wrong, Jimmy and John are aging too and it takes a toll on their ability to play like they used to. I know, I'm a bassist myself and have been since I was 16 and I'm now 51 and developing arthritis in my right hand. This makes it a little harder to play at times. They are much older than me and I can only imagine where their physical bodies are at their age. But things like standing up for long periods of time, having a guitar slung around your shoulder takes a toll on your back, knees, and feet even as one gets older. Psychically playing in groups is a lot different at 16 than 51 is for me now. I'm sure if those guys did a 2 hr show playing their instruments they are pretty darn tired after.
@@kman-mi7su- That's not really the point, though your perspective has considerable merit. Robert can't tune his voice to E and sing it like the record, the guy is 72 and though he's a fantastic singer, he's not going to be able to sing communication breakdown at the same rate as he did 50 years ago.
Led Zeppelin was a 4-piece band, and there's only 3 members still alive. Therefore, no reunion. It's been like that for 36 years now and will remain so unless John Bonham comes back to life.
It would have been cool for them to play a tribute concert to Bonham with guest drummers and a show or two for their 50th. A tour? We’ll maybe as the Nobs and get a new drummer. Jason is OK but I like John Theodore
Equally respect and hate the fact Robert feels that way. But he’s so right, it just wouldn’t be what it once was. There is a difference between 25 and 75 unfortunately lol
If your a die hard fan, you'll understand why they don't want to produce anything fresh and youll cherish what they have created in the past and let it be..
They have created their masterpiece. It will last through the time. Why would they play the same songs with their actual state of mind and energy ? It would be worst. Let's enjoy what they gave us 40 years ago et foutons- leur la paix.
Let them be free... like their music is. Don't ask them about a reunion, or pressure them into doing it using money. They need to decide that upon themselves!!! Ask them what their interests are now and what they were in the past. If you give them some space they might actually decide to do a reunion on their own.......... come on interviewers, Lighten up!
I agree!! Not only interviewers need to lighten up, but fans, too! Seems like lots of fans have been throwing tons of demands on Plant for another reunion or even a tour. I mean, c’mon, they should give the guy some air to breathe.
The O2 show in 2007 was supposed to be two nights originally. Page and Jones were wanting to tour, as was Jason Bonham, but Plant was too busy with the Raising Sands album, which is of course fair enough, though a tour would have been amazing. Or at least a handful of festival dates over that year. 15 years on, while nothing is impossible, but I just think that we have to accept that it is extremely unlikely that Zep will ever play again, much less ever record any new material!
Dear CBS News; Where is the full interview/expose on video? We watched it this morning and it was excellent. But we want to share it with friends who were not able to view it. Can't find it anywhere. Links please?? - Thanks in advance. :)
@@ExtremeWays4Bourne It's a matter of who would sing I'm thinking. Unless Jimmy and John Paul want to do a musical? Or try and find another singer? Doubtful.
The truth is that Jimmy and JPJ would probably get back to playing LZ stuff in a heartbeat but Robert doesn't feel up to it or feel enthusiastic enough about it to want to go back to it.
i would.ve loved to have seen the led zeppelin reunion play madison square garden but i know how badly far fetch that was very sadly i never saw led zeppelin but i saw page plant twice in 1995 and 1998 page and the crowes twice in 1999 once in 2000 jimmy page 1985 1986 1988 robert plant 1983 to 2018 john paul jones 1999 2001 2009 those guys are still a spiracular force
Plant just can't sing the Zeppelin stuff anymore. He pretty much whispers everything he sings these days. They might be able to do a one off show here or there, but there's no way he could do a tour and sing those songs the way he used to. A reunion isn't going to happen, and that's probably a good thing. I'd love for Page and JPJ to get together and work on some stuff though.
I am a huge Plant fan and buy all his new stuff. But, his voice could not hold up to touring Zep songs, and singing them anywhere close to the original style.
I concur. Jones and Page could work together on some nee music, or even tour around just with a different singer if they’re okay with that. Fans have been exhausting him with all these requests of participation in another Led Zeppelin reunion or tour. Overall, it’s best if we let Robert do his own thing since he wants to move on and try new things.
Robert sings incredibly well, far beyond whispers. But belting Black Dog or Communication Breakdown 4-5 nights a week? No way. His voice has naturally lowered with age. I think those guys creating a brand new batch of songs would be great, but not as Zeppelin.
Give us a best of earls court DVD full concert and 77 and call it a day. Maybe sprinkle in some early day stuff too. How the east was won or official blue berry hill
I have noticed this in many great musicians. Look at interviews with for instance Tony Iommi and Eddie van Halen. It is as if their fingers are longing for the instrument.
At 0:30 seconds of the clip John Paul Jones just sighs because he knows what's coming.. I wish Robert would just once admit it and say it straight that he doesn't want to do it because Johns not here anymore.
You looney people commenting below are bugging me. I mean really? This is Led FUCKING Zeppelin we are listening to and you want to talk rubbish? Please quite yourself for the benefit of everyone else. Oh a real note, I love seeing these guys rekindle a friendship and possibly make some more lovely tunes for our listening pleasure. Rock it Zeppelin!
It’s all bcoz of Plant btw. The other two were always fine with it. Shame that he often played Zeppelin songs in his solo act and with Alisson Krauss.I think it’s too late now. GNR have been touring non stop on the strength of one freaking album, at least these guys could have given us at least a year of World Tour back in ‘07-08.
Uh was that a jab at the others... myself like Paul McCartney have a prosperous solo career and Ringo like jimmy and John haven't done a damn thing worthwhile... i'm not going to go back to being told what to do....I like being my own boss and telling everyone else what they are doing wrong..I don't need jimmy or John telling me no we're going to do this and that and we're going to do it this way...
Page looks very uncomfortable with Plant's response. The 'superb' was sounding a little sarcastic... Ross Halfin said that they were bickering continuously when he was shooting them in NYC around this time. Just shows that creative relationships aren't always the most amicable. Do it for the cash and the time and then walk away... best way.
Everybody wants to hear immigrant song and battle of evermore and all of the songs they knew and loved the way they sound on the album and it would be kind of like the beach boys doing a show again. Just disappointment and the guys would be doing it purely for money. None of them should be broke. I’m sure the net worth of each of those guys is at least $100 million. They should be able to get out across the finish line of their life with that amount.
Haha aww Robert he’s cute but he ain’t interested in ever playing Led Zeppelin ever again. I get it and I respect his decision. I would love to meet JPJ he’s just seems so humble, down to earth, and naturally funny.
Probably. There's a video on youtube where he goes to see a rather excellent Zeppelin tribute band in Japan and you hear him asking for a non-alcoholic beer.
@@heliotropezzz333 He looks pretty good at 76! I saw a quick clip of him , someone asked how he kept in shape. He's into yoga and drinks lots of water.
I guess Robert Plant said 'No' and the others couldn't find a fitting singer I understand Roberts point, but it's a shame for all Led Zeppelin fans Being the biggest Stones fan on this planet I can imagine what the Led Leppelin fans missed for the last 40 years
Cmon jimmy u know roberts not up for it,get chris robinson, jonesy and jason boham and do it again!!!!! ur wastin time!!! thats what everyone wants and it would be more than a capable band!!!!
Would not be the same without plant... just as it's not the same without bonzo.. yes Jason did a fantastic job... but removing robert singing totally change the whole vibe.. who you going to get.. are they going to try and imitate robert.. the show's jimmy did with coverdale were a joke because of his trying to sing like robert on some stuff and like he was in whitesnake on other stuff... just doesn't cut it..
Jimmy, as Plant once said, needs a community workshop in order to really get going. The issue is that Jimmy is trying to capture lightning in a bottle by playing with who he's familiar with. John Paul and Robert don't have that issue, they just get some people and create new and interesting music. Jimmy needs to let go in order to move on, or else he'll never play like he says he'll do.
Interesting how Percy says "we" so many times while the others sit in silence and Pagey looks uneasy - is he speaking for them? Anyway, I think artists like this are being selfish. So may fans want to see them again - even if it is a nostalgia trip. It was us who put them in the position of being able to turn down $800,000,000 in the first place... They owe it to us.
They don't owe us anything. They left us a legacy of great music. If you understood the dynamics of the band you would know why they will never tour again.
Plants voice was diminishing after 1972. After the car wreck in Greece he seriously considered quitting.  Their best work was behind them and the only reason he came back was because of the insistence of Bonzo.  The death of his son Karac, in 1977 was the second time he had to be coaxed back and even then he said the band was done after that.  The death of Bonzo was the engine that drove them.  They would never be the same, they knew it and then quit rather than being a joke like the Monkees or the 80 year old Stones....  The 02 show was homage to Ahmet. A one off blessing.
Talking about money like that to Led Zeppelin feels distasteful. It was never about the money, it was the art of it. An eloquent and considered answer, immediately sideswiped by a ‘but what about the MONEY’ question. Sigh.
They take themselves so seriously. You guys are just a rock band! Your fans wanted to see a reunion, give the people what they want! But your so worried about your legacy! How many songs did you rip off Jimmy?
