That is one bad-ass kettle! I just bought a used 22.5 in kettle that needs TLC and stumbled onto your channel/video. Fantastic ideas and modifications. Thank you!
Love all the mods Tom. I have done some of these to my WSM. When I finally get a kettle, I'll definitely be doing some of this to it too. Thanks for the tips
Hey Tom! This is a total custom, personalized, and BadAss Kettle! Really like the looks of it with the side tables on…… Awesome! That's My kind of Grill Hack Vid! Rock On!!!!! \m/
Thanks for the inspiration, Tom! This past weekend I added a temp gauge to my small weber smokey joe so I could take my first leap into cold smoking foodstuffs. In the long run I could see investing in a bigger model such as yours. Loved the hinge, felt and dual temp gauges. I did see something similar on the temp gauges at Home Depot for those not wanting to order online.
Just added the hinge, gonna install a temp probe. Waiting on some customized maple handles to come in. Waiting on your video where you lengthen the legs. Great video boss.
Tom, Great mods that you made. I live in the Australia so miss seeing friends adding things to their Weber. I also added an temp gage to the out side, other than that I am pretty much stock. I really like the hinge and the other improvements. I'll keep an eye out for them. I also just finished watching your video on cooking the Costco ribs on your modified kettle. they did look good.
I am a Weber Kettle guy myself, I love how you accessorized your kettle, too bad that Weber doesn’t put those thermometers where they need to be at the factory. Thanks for the video!
Cool modifications. I have two 22.5 Webers. The only modification I've done so far is to insert a couple self tapping metal screws into the top of the legs to keep them from popping out when moving the grill. I would love to see an improvement on the casters, which are fine for moving the grill very short distances on flat surfaces. Also, the grill will flip if you lift the handle to high. I just carry it now (not lit, of course)when I want to move it more than a couple feet.
you are most welcome. Those hinges are not cheap...especially when you are paying in Canadian dollars. Basically, 10 US dollars is approximately 15 Canadian and a first round draft pick. That being said, they do look really well made and the pin is smart. May I ask, where did you get the tiered rack? You probably said but I don't remember. That would be a great add for direct heat, burgers, dogs and having some guests over..kinda thing....ohhh (thinking out loud) nice also for potatoes and steaks.
Excellent video. I like your future idea of longer legs on the Weber. You identified the problem correctly for guys who are taller like my self at 6'3" also with lower back injury. The shorter legs of the Weber cause me to bend over thus causing some really bad lower back pain that does not go away sometimes for several days. Longer legs would make using the Weber much more enjoyable.
I find that an ideal grill top height would be 34" to 36" seems to be very comfortable for me. Another option would be adjustable legs for people of various heights. They should also have a safety lock so the whole thing does not come crashing down.
Hey Tom. Awesome videos. Been a subscriber for just a short time now and you’ve inspired me tremendously. I recently purchased a Weber 22 , slow and sear and a drip pan. Wanted to do some smoking on it an I see you’ve installed the temp gauge on the vent side. I have 2 questions. What size stem would you recommend on the temp gauge and how accurate is it ?? Thanks for your videos !!!
Thanks for Watching! Stay shooter than longer on the stem size. As accuracy they are not very exact no matter how much you spend but will definitely get you in the ball park.
Hi Tom, just found your channel. I am new to the weber kettle but absolutely love it! I was wondering if you know anything about or have ever tried to convert an original Kettle to a premium kettle with the ash catcher? I’ve read some articles on it but can not find a video of anyone doing it yet. Any info would be SO appreciated! Take care Tom! 👍
You know Tom I need to try that. I used briquettes probably wouldn’t hurt to try lump before I start drilling. Also do 6pu have a Wsm and if so did you add casters
Have a questions seeing you work with Webers a lot. What would be the best way to transport a 22 Kettle Weber for camping. It would need to be in the back of the truck under TONNEAU cover. Really like the side shelves in the video. You are a brave guy not sure I could drill into my new Weber.
Quick question for you. You mounted the hinge parallel to the wheel axis. Any thoughts on that positioning now that you've had it in place for six months?
Hey Tom, I’ve been watching your channel for years now. I have about 10 Weber kettles and the 1st one I ever bought and my favorite is this same green premium you have. I do the vent handle mod on all of them like you (thanks for the idea). I have a question, how do you like having the 2nd thermometer on this green kettle for indirect? I have a spare Weber thermometer I’ve been wanting to add to my green kettle. Any input would help, I’m assuming having one on each side gives you different readings for different cooks? Thanks in advance and keep making great videos! We appreciate you a lot!
I need that hinge for my Wsm. Have you had any trouble getting your Smokey Joe hot enough with the lid on? I’m making two vent covers out of aluminum going to drill holes on either side of the kettle to let more air in. Mine has the bottom vent and top vent.
I just ordered a premium 22" to replace an old/ rusted unit and it only has 1 handle on the kettle base. I built a table for the older version (had 2 handles) and this new one will "fall through". Any suggestions for me?
Tom I know it has been a while since you installed the lid hing so I wanted to know if you still like it. Also I have the Weber performer deluxe 22 do you think the hing would work well on it?
Thanks for Watching Norm, I did not sand off anything but did clean it very well to remove anything that effect adhesion and before applying clean again with alcohol and allowed to dry and then applied and it has held up well, I’ve done this on several of my kettles and pellet grills with no problem
@@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ but then this a new grill, should have noticed it before. I’m thinking an older grill would need sanding to get the build up off the inner rim then hit with alcohol or mineral spirits to finish.
Great video! at the end of this video, What brand, item number of the HALF RACK that you place on top of the 22' grate, to double the size of the indirect cooking area? I would like to order the same one. I'm looking at a half shelf, being sold by Weber Corp., that has a 5.0" to the shelf level allowing space underneath, to cook/smoke food. Many on the market, are NOT as tall, so not as flexible to use for various cooks.
Great videos Tom. Question. Were you ever going to do the video where you make the legs longer? I know I asked before but at the time you said you were moving. Would like to see that mod. Thanks.
Hello where can i find this hinge? I am in France and we do not have this accessory in our store. thank you in advance salut ou puis je trouver cette charnière? je suis en france et nous n'avons pas cette accessoire dans nos magasin. par avance merci
Hi Tom, I searched all over Amazon and did not find this specific top shelf. I found the Hovergrill which looks pretty sweet but not this specific one. What is the name of the shelf? Thanks Bart
The beauty of the Weber was its simplicity. If you want all the bells and whistles, get a grill already well equipped. Of course some people like putting a hemi in a VW.
