I just got a Weber kettle yesterday from Facebook marketplace and I’m definitely going to add a thermometer. Thanks for the quick simple video. Best $40 I’ve ever spent.
Approximate temperature is correct I did the sane mod an installed ah tru tell analog thermometer 225-275 on almost anything indirect cooking is usually done 1.5 hrs to 2 hrs heavy duty foil wrapped meats go 2.5-3 hrs semi perfect it's fire is consistent
I’m so happy I added this. I added the charcoal ash catcher basked shortly after this video. I’ve smoked some killer meals on this kettle. Thanks for watching! Smoke on my friend!!!
Do you think it would have mattered if you went a bit lower on placement so that the thermometer was completely aligned/in the middle of the top damper?
If you’re using this to cook low and slow. You would want the thermometer as close to the air vent as possible. Because you would put that event directly over the meat you are smoking.
@@FrankGuest Any issue putting the thermometer to the right of left of the upper damper/vent? I think I might go that route when drilling and installing.
@@jordank87 as long as you keep it on the opposite side of the heat source you’ll be fine. This is optimal placement if you’re going to be doing indirect cooking.
I have one that’s nearly 12 years old and mine has a huge hook?! Not sure what happened there? I will go to the side of the hook like you. Don’t think it will matter a bit. Good video! Thanks for sharing!
Good video, but your gauge should be opposite your vent. The vent is where heat escapes the grill. You want your temp ready to be uninterrupted. The side opposite the vent is less disturbed giving a more accurate temp reading.
Putting the gauge opposite the vent would be directly over the heat like he explained in the video. You want the temperature from where you're actually cooking right?
When you smoke your meat, you want your meet directly under the vent. So you want the temperature reading as close to the meat as possible. That is why I put the thermostat there. If I put the thermometer any place else, it would be too close to the heat source, and too far away from where my meat sits on the grill.
I recently bought a new weber kettle. have to say that I was disappointed somewhat. My 12 yr old kettle is the standard like yours except European regs meant it had the top handle heat guard and a Therm'. They defo slipped up with the therm' placement. I think it was done for use with two baskets, funny thing is I never had a prob with even cooking just shoving the coal to one side or using a slow n sear and as a result as you said, the therm' ends up over the coal. And dont get me started on the stupid wire lid holder that expertly directs all the smoke and heat into your face. Classic fixing of something not broken IMO.
I've a GBS kettle arriving in a couple of days, and I will be modifying the thermometer replacement - with an extra, lower placed thermometer - near the rotating vent. You are absolutely correct about the factory placement of the standard unit, but it is where it is for reasons of showroom image. Nice shiny sexy Weber logo on the front of the dome to entice buyers, who will then wonder why they have such poor results when not understanding what the temperature gauge is actually telling them. The factory should really address this fairly serious design flaw, perhaps with a second thermometer near the vent unit. They won't though, will they, so we'll have to do it ourselves !
He's putting it in the wrong place. Should be same height as exhaust holes and 180 or 90 degrees from the exhaust holes. Go look at new ones. Taking five minutes to show you where to put the hole?
Ideally if you’re smoking, not grilling you want it exactly where the vent holes are because your meat should be under the holes. If your grilling (not low and slow) location does not really matter. That’s why new Webber grills put it on the opposite side of the vent. Opposite side of the vent is 100% wrong place if your smoking meat. Thanks for watching.
