And its brand name is buldak- if it was pronounced with japanese phonemes and word structure in mind with the assumption that we are using katakana as the basis for the word (which is,,, not ideal, given that Korea and Japan are next door neighbors relative to the world) it would be pronounced ブルダク/ BURUDAKU, because the L sound is not used in their phonetics and is replaced with R, and with the exception of N, every phoneme in japanese ends with a vowel even if it's not pronounced (Sorry abt the text dump. I got excited to share what little knowledge I have of the language because I wanted to learn it solely for exploring Japanese history and culture outside of the tiny bubble of anime)

This reminds me of the time in high school when me and some friends started a Japanese Culture club. It started off being an obsession with manga and anime and wanting to visit certain locations in Japan from various shows. It was sponsored by a teacher who had lived in Japan for a couple of years when he was younger. He was mortified and did his best to get us to appreciate the history and culture of the actual country outside of the shows and comics. He even wrnt as far as to buy us secondhand kimonos from a thrift shop he used to frequent, would bring us handmade food that were staples in Japan, and trying to teach us words OTHER than what few we picked up from the shows (baka, senpai, etc.). He actually helped several of us realize theres a difference between appreciating Japan and being obsessed with stereotypes. I still hope to go to Japan one day. I really miss Mr. Wright. Might see if my dad still keeps in touch with him.
Same! I used to love Gegege No Kitaro, but when I said “I’m watching a new anime”, I always got weird looks until I explained it was a horror show, with social commentary, and a lot of complexities that wouldn’t be needed if I just said “I’m watching a new show”.

So like OP I got into Japanese because I liked sailor moon as a kid (I mean literally a kid I was 5 in kindergarten lol) and had to take a language for college to graduate. Didn’t want Spanish. Sister took French. Remembered sailor moon when I saw they had Japanese on offer. I’d not seen any other anime besides pikemon lol. Fast forward 4 years and I’m now deep down the Japanese cultural rabbit hole. I studied abroad in Japan for my Japanese minor and East Asian studies major (I stared off a bio major 😂). I shit you not. I SHIT YOU NOT. Someone at my school in japan went home after 2 weeks because “japan wasn’t like anime.” Everyone shit on that person for ages after. It was just so ludicrous lol. Like as a foreigner you never watched tv from your own country and laughed at how silly it is? Like do people think American sitcoms depict real life?! Although I do understand you, I am half Asian and sometimes I feel like others judge me because they don't think I'm Asian. No fr. Weebs have ruined it for me. My bf is Filipino and because I'm a white American they assume I'm dating him because he's Asian. I love him because he's hilarious and kind and we can talk for hours about anything but in their opinion I date him cuz he's Asian. Weebs fetishizing Asians really makes me uncomfortable. 😣 It makes me hesitant to really engage with my boyfriend's culture because ppl lump all ppl interested in anything Asian into the category. It doesn't help that I liked the language and history of Japan. I gave up on my interest because I felt like all the weebs I kept meeting ruined it. Which is sad cuz I love history in general. My boyfriend understands this, my love for history, food, culture and language. But because of Weebs, I'm limited to what I feel I can engage in. 😅 I totally understand.
I’m Japanese and while I do feel cringe sometimes from extreme weebs (eg: tryna go to an Asian market in full cosplay), the joy and appreciation I feel seeing other people like Japanese culture overpowers it. So, I just want to say thanks, to anyone out there, that enjoys Japanese culture.

I was quite the weeb back then. First watched anime when I was in kindergarten, often used names from anime characters when we were roleplaying. I think I got a lot of awkward stares but I wasn't really aware. Like, I really thought it was normal. Heck, I once did a Naruto run while screaming like Natsu during elementary cuz I thought it boosts my speed (I'm a fast runner tho so it kinda stayed in my head for a while). Anyway that was so embarassing to look back

When I went to teach in Japan, the teachers were so confused when I said I was interested in Japanese nature and history; they were even more shocked when I said I didn't like many anime shows.
Every time I tell someone I’m learning Japanese they roll their eyes and ask “because of anime?” And I’m like well that’s my first exposure to Japanese culture but no that’s not why- and they’re already not listening.

I had a person come up to me after a class to ask about my last name (Yi). He asked if I was Asian and then Just Kept Talk about how he Loves Asian culture. He asked if I knew anything about it which I don’t because my grandfather was my only link and he passed. He then said that I should “really look into it”. He walked with me until we got to the parking lot where I promptly left. But every time I’d have class he would do that. He also asked me if I had Instagram because he saw it on my phone. It got to the point that I had to talk to the teacher because it was bad. Like I was scared. When my teacher did confront him he said “oh well I guess I’ll never have any friends because I’m autistic” (to point out I have many autistic friends and have adhd. It was not because of that) I felt bad but he was so creepy. Hes not Asian he was just apparently enamored by the culture of All Asian countries since he never specified where

I will be completely honest, I couldn't name any others without second guessing myself. But that's because I'm a stupid American who was barely taught my own country's states, let alone other countries named and locations.
Thankfully I didn’t fall into this because my mom’s side of the family is from India, which is an Asian country some people legit don’t know is in Asia. Like I’ve had a friend who only considered Japan, China, & Korea were the only Asian countries and was completely confused when I said my family wasn’t from those places.

I went to an asian supermarket in a city near me and I felt awkward because everyone was so efficient and obviously looking for specific items and I was walking around slow as hell staring at everything like it was a museum. I feel slightly less bad about that knowing that people actually take their weeb shit in front of real asian people with no shame.
It's normal to be slow, especially if you can't read the packaging. But I'm sure the store owners are happy to have you there. There are fast and slow people in any kind of store

That is true. I just wish there were more good anime fans like you that went against these weebs and bad fans. For a long time I never got into anime because it was so toxic. There was always some creep trying to shove their weird hentai on everyone, or the weebs like in the video who thirsted after me. They were always the loudest ones, and they never seemed to get any pushback. It was so uncomfortable. I just left and never looked back. A good show doesn’t make up for a bad community.

Oh man this spoke to me on an unbelievably personal level My high-school had an anime club and contrary to what one might expect, everyone there was normal about anime and Japanese culture (I especially loved the folklore and mythology, still do) The club leader was very firm about not engaging in this kind of behavior and would shoot down anyone using usual insane weeb terminology or acting like these kinds of people *Except there was one girl who managed to slip through the cracks* She acted exactly like this, would wear the same Hetalia cosplay almost every single day to school, openly referred to herself with terms like "fujoshi" and "otaku", and often described gay couples with terms like "yaoi/yuri" despite the club leader rather kindly (then firmly) telling her those terms being used in that way was highly inappropriate The worst day of my life at that club was when I casually mentioned the fact one of my cousins was married to a Japanese woman (cause I was talking about Japanese folklore in pop culture and mentioned one of the storybooks their daughter had that her mom used to teach her Japanese featured an Oni as a character) *She wouldn't leave me alone about it and kept asking hella invasive questions for ages until the club leader put her foot down on my behalf and told her to stop cause i was too much of a doormat at the time to do it myself*

I'm assuming most people who act like that are still teenagers. I was close to being a weeb when I was that age, but never went full cringe because I was too shy to express myself at all. But I do remember the feeling of full on happiness when someone would take an interest in something I liked. Its like passion takes over your brain and you cant switch it off. You need people around you who bring you back to the ground without being overly mean about it.
I know a lot of people who went through A Phase (tm) when they were teenagers, myself included, and like I feel like it's understandable to a degree; but the ""appreciation for Asian culture"" or even certain anime veers into regular racism pretty fast, which is where the problems show up

I went through a phase in elementary school where I was OBSESSED with Chinese and Japanese cultures (like the actual cultures & history) and I badly wanted to go to a Chinatown someday because I had a book about the one in San Francisco. Well, fast forward 2 decades, my friends & I got to Chicago Chinatown and I'm super excited. My friend (non-anime fan but ironically a kpop stan) deadass looked at me and said "you better not be a cringy weeb." I felt immediate shame despite my genuine interest and excitement about Chinatown.

To be fair, anime titles have become ridiculously long. So remember the whole title in any language can be a huge struggle. That's why most people use shortened versions instead. For example Tensura instead of "The time I got reincarnated as a slime", which is even longer in Japanese.

I like to collect cute bottles and I get SO MANY from asian supermarkets and I feel so bad every time I'm like "OMG THIS PACKAGING IS SO CUTEEEE" bc I used to have a friend like this 😭 they told me they wanted to be asian when they are older

As a real Asian, I saw this happen in a market with my mom before. I’m scared. I haven’t mentally recovered yet. They wore like this like Bakugo and Todoroki matching cosplay. You want to know what I wore? An oversized weezer shirt and beetle juice pajama pants. I just wanted my dumplings. They were taking Insta selfies the entire time, I’m scared.

Don't be. In reality, most people from Japan would appreciate you learning their language. The only people who will call you out on it are white people and people who don't live in Japan anymore, and they're in the wrong for doing so.
lol why? Lots of people learn Japanese and lots of people visit/want to visit Japan. I actually don’t think I’ve ever met someone who hasn’t said they’d love to visit Japan one day (it comes up pretty often in random conversations since I go twice a year). I had to tell my neighbor I’d be gone for two weeks recently. He’s a late 50’s ex police officer, and he was like “I’ve always wanted to visit Tokyo!” Lol. There are a lot cringe communities for all kinds of otherwise normal interests. Just do what you’re into.
Why? Wanting to learn the language and visit the country isnt embarrassing. The argument to learn it is the same as wanting to learn any other language, or for visting any other place. Also if your going out of your way to make the argument that its others fault that you feel shame about it, should i them feel shame for having learned english and wanting to visit england or usa because of the movies and shows i have watched?
I used to work at a Japanese restaurant and one of the memories I have to this day is my coworker telling me a weeb stopped him to correct his pronunciation of "tempura" when he was taking her order, and she said it wrong lmao. Wearing anime is fine. Just don't act like Tempura Girl.
SAME. i don't wear anime tops but i'm half filipino and half italian and i look more italian so white passing. and even tho socially some filipino people think it's better for afab people to be white, sometimes i don't think i'm "asian enough." or that i don't look asian which i've been told so many times and sometimes people just completely forget that i'm asian. 😐😐 being mixed is so fun guys
It's these people that make me feel weird for trying to appreciate my own culture... I'm part Japanese and I love learning about Japanese culture as well as other asian cultures.
