She wrote this song when she was 16 years old about her dad. The companion song to this is Piece by Piece. The only time he wanted anything to do with Kelly was when she was making money after American Idol. Clive Davis, famous for acts like Aretha and Whitney, hated this song because it didn’t rhyme and tried to get it off the Breakaway album. But when it gained success he tried to get credit by saying it was his idea to put it on the album

She wrote it about both of her parents and their divorce. When you read these lines, she's talking to her mom about her mom's reaction to the dad leaving and not seeing Kelly's pain, seeing only her own. I watched you die (I watched you die) I heard you cry Every night in your sleep I was so young (and you're so young) You should have known better (I was too young for you) Than to lean on me You never thought of anyone else You just saw your pain (you never saw me) And now I cry In the middle of the night For the same damn thing

Kelly's dad left them when she was 6. Because he refused to give her mom any money, her brother had to go live with the dad, her sister lived with an aunt and Kelly was raised by her mother. The entire family was split up. After she won American Idol she tried to reconnect with him and he once and turned his back on her, telling her he had a new family now. Around 2016 he was dying and wanted to make anends. Kelly then turned her back on him.
