Video Description:
A super boring video this week, but important for those true beginners. We've already discussed reef sand and how to make saltwater, but how do you add these two things into your display tank safely?
Well, it's not that hard. Start by adding the reef "live" sand first. Just be sure to scoop it in gently, don't pour it in. You don't want to splatter the sand on the glass walls, because even after it's full of saltwater, you still may scratch the glass the first time you use a magnetic algae scraper.
Then add the aquascape, and be sure it's settled firmly on the glass bottom, not on top of the sand. To add seawater, use a plate, bowl, or colander and pour the water directly on top. This will help disperse the water and not cause a huge sandstorm.
Next up, install your return pump and either filter sock or sponge. Leave the filter sock in for about 24 hours, then take it out and rinse it, and put it back in. This will help make the water super clear.

I have had saltwater tanks for close to 20 years. I am looking at buying my first all in one tank and I had no idea about the auto top off placement. Always something new to learn here.

Thanks for the videos. Before adding the rock, you might want to remove sharp points in the bottom using a grit (sandpaper) stuck on a piece of wood. Later on if the rocks moved or there was too much weight on a sharp point that could be an issue. Simon

Hi Matthew - it might be a basic video this week but the timing is perfect for me. I just added my aquascape last night to the IM Nuvo Fusion 20G. I finished making the RODI water last night. Next step will be making the saltwater this weekend. I am rushing. Thank you for making the video.

Thanks for the videos. Putting the ATO in the return chamber where the height fluctuates wouldn't be the best choice. Putting it next to the input weir shows the true level of your tank. Small fluctuations in the return chamber will affect only a small percentage of the total volume. If the height varies too much in the return chamber then this might need investigating. If the chamber with the heater has a water height that varies then this might also need investigating to avoid issues with heater/thermostat and glass. Just putting the heater in the tank also requires some thought as not all heaters are of the fully submergible type e.g. there is a minimum height but sometimes a maximum height e.g. not over the top of the control/adjustment part. One thing I can never find on any video, how much do you initially fill up your sump? Like fill it up to where you want how your off line to be, when the return is off and then mark an on line after it's turned on and fully going? Or do you fill it up more than that? Idk why but this has confused me a lot. I've never used a sump before. Just doing a lot of research before setting up my fist saltwater tank. Awesome video as always! Thank you for putting out good material for the newcomers.
@MyFirstFishTank
@MyFirstFishTank 3 года назад
Les, that is such a great question, and I didn't even think about that, but I do remember not understanding when I was a beginner. Everything revolves around the return chamber, the last chamber that you put your return pump into. That is the only chamber that will fluctuate in height. So, to start out with, you want to fill up that chamber to the top of the baffle. Basically, that will mean that the water height is constant throughout, just to the top of the baffles. Hope that helps and thanks for pointing out a question I forgot to answer!!! Sometimes it's hard to remember all of the beginner things when I've been a few years in the hobby!!

Hi sir At first I thanks for everything I had a Aquavarium since I was 7 old But now I’m 28 and I’m going to set up marine Aqua My question is that;i have to turn off my protein skimmer and light for my starting bacteria and salinity must on which number?
@MyFirstFishTank
@MyFirstFishTank 2 года назад
Hi Mohammad, sorry for the late reply! It is best to turn off the skimmer and light. Turn off the skimmer so it doesn't pull out any of that beneficial bacteria, and leave the light off so that you don't get nuisance algae growth before adding a clean up crew. And salinity, shoot for 35ppm or 1.026 specific gravity.

I'm sort of a newbie so thanks from us! lol I want to set up a tank with some rock and just fish (no corals). I'm finding it difficult to find one that is long enough for medium size fish and one with an all-in-one system (no sump). Any recommendations? I guess you can't use a canister filter, so that limits me. Thank you
@MyFirstFishTank
@MyFirstFishTank 3 года назад
How many gallons? You have a few options. 1) You could definitely use a canister filter, just make sure it's big enough. You could also use an oversized hang on the back filter. What size tank are you looking for?

Hi I just wanted to ask if I don't have ro water on me is it OK that I use my tap water to top the tank up, please do reply
@MyFirstFishTank
@MyFirstFishTank 2 года назад
Hi, I know a lot of hobbyists who use tap water. It really depends on your water source. If it is high in nutrients, it may be okay for the short term, but could lead to a lot of nuisance algae in the long term. RO/DI or distilled water is definitely preferred, but you can make it work with tap water, depending on your source.

@@MyFirstFishTank OK thanks for your help I'll rather by the rodi water system so whan the water evaporate it will work out cheaper and I can just make it myself thanks for your help does the ro di water system really work to make the water

i have a small aquarium with hang on back filter and air stone but any fish i put in still die and my water tests are good no A no No2 and little No3 what could i do with this tank my CUC seem fine
@MyFirstFishTank
@MyFirstFishTank 3 года назад
Hmm, sometimes you just get sick fish. So many things could be causing this from sick livestock to disease in the tank. After all of your fish die, the best thing to do is either to wait 72 days to make sure all of the ich (if there is any) is dead, or completely sterlize the tank and start over. Do you know what is killing them? Do they have spots on them? How long do they live? What are their symptoms?
