Series 2: Is all about this wreck of a Norton Commando from 1968!
WEEK 2 - This week I get stuck into the bike strip continued. There were many quirky issues on this Norton such as the spanner types needed for taking the head off but we don't fail!
Every week a new video will be uploaded covering my week by week restoration of this iconic part of the Norton history, the original Norton Commando 750 1968, so PLEASE SUBSCRIBE TO MY CHANNEL AND HIT THE NOTIFICATION 'BELL' ICON, TO BE NOTIFIED WHEN A NEW VIDEO IS PUBLISHED.
I look forward to sharing this worthwhile project with all Norton enthusiasts around the world.
Some history of this Norton Commando:
It was discovered in the USA rusting away until it was shipped to auction. Disguised as a cafe racer this Commando found its way to a local dealer but little did anyone know that this was one of the very first production Commandos in existence. The earliest recorded production Commando was 126125. This Norton Commando serial is 126188 putting it into the very earliest period of the commando. In fact I welcome anyone to produce a frame engine and gearbox Commando with an earlier serial number. I would be most intrigued to see how many still survive from that period.
From the auction in the USA it was shipped across 4 states to eventually being shipped to France where it was put up again for auction on eBay. I was very lucky to spot it whilst on holiday in Mallorca. It was a perfect project for the type of aesthetic restoration work I undertake. The dealer very kindly drove through the night and through the covid restrictions to my workshop in England.
Unlike the Royal Enfield Bullet 350 restoration in Series 1 (which you should definitely watch), we will follow the progress week by week as opposed to a master class in restoration for each part of a vintage bike restore.
Yes if you are thinking about restoring an English / British made vintage motorbike then you just lucked out! This series brings back a most beautiful classic English super bike back to new factory condition.
I do not over polish or finish any restored bikes. I also do not believe in rusting patena examples. I reverse engineer the restoration to what the designer had envisioned and no more. That is how they were..Restore with great care and do what is right for the bike!

Such a shame the degree of neglect these Nortons endure...

Hi. I'm enjoying watching your video, since I bought a restored Mk3 Commando and didn't see the work that went in to restoring it. But I've learnt loads since owning it and using it. Please be aware that you need to support the frame before you remove all of the Isolastic bolts, as once they removed the engine, swinging arm and rear wheel become independent of the rest of the bike and it basically becomes two separate pieces.

Cheers Colin you are quite right. I’m further along with the bike as these videos are a bit behind. Please stay with the channel as I share just how much work goes into a restoration! 🙏

I've never had any problems with those headbolts by the spark plugs. Those were always the EASY ones. But I'm surprised you didn't show the wee little rearmost headbolt snugged well in there between the cylinder fins. Maybe it has its own episode? I had to take a combination wrench (or "spanner", if you prefer) to the grinder to flatten and reduce its girth to fit. I think it was a 1/4 Whitworth, which ain't cheap around here. But anyhow, carry on. I'm enjoying looking over your shoulder.

Cheers Ian, What as P11? Have got a serial? So far mine is the oldest surviving. I’d love to know how many are older. Help me!!

Yup, we’ll it’s still an Atlas motor, from which the Commando’s lump is derived, but in a Matchless frame. A bona fide Norton factory machine, but often derided by Norton owners as being a ghastly hybrid. They were sold mostly in the States and dealers could market them as either Norton or Matchless. Not a wildly popular bike in its day owing largely to the readily available lighter weight two strokes for off road/desert racing. Can’t wait for upcoming episodes. 👍

If you are watching this because you have a Norton to disassemble first, buy a few Whitworth wrenches. Second, cut no wires, Third, spray all bolts with penetrating oil. Four, pull the push rods up into the head and rotate the head backward to remove once the bolts are out.

Probably a bit late now but the original head bolts heads are 1/4" Whitworth, but new bolts I believe now have a 13mm head,

Not too late actually. Once I’ve got my vintage Mx bikes done then I’ll finish this one off.

Thank you very much for the history, really interesting to read before watching the videos (wish more channels did this). Can I ask are you using Whitworth spanners and not imperial?I think it was around 1958 that engineering (British Iron) moved across to using imperial spanners 🤔. Great videos keep on doing the old stuff up to 1980 👍

Thanks for chipping in. Much appreciated. Norton used 3 types. Imperial, American fine and metric! Chaos at that time!
