Hi Nick! I'm commenting on this older video to say thank you for recommending Small Things Like These. I listened to the audiobook this morning and can't wait to pick up a copy for my shelf and re-read it around Christmastime. Truly one of my favorite books I've ever read, so thank you so much! Can't wait to read more of Keegan.
A Swim in a Pond in the Rain breaks down some essays from Chekhov, Turgenev, Tolstoy, and Gogol. It was an incredible introduction to some Russian classics. Would recommend!
Keegan is wonderful writer. Her latest, So late in the Day is another fantastic book. Another of her books, Foster was actually made into a movie aswell. Cailín Ciúin, The Quiet Girl. Worth checking out.
Yup... I'm a maximalist too. Totally understand that..... Love your channel! Just bought 10 books after binge watching your vids. Yup, I'm ok. Way overdue for some new books as I haven't bought anything for a while. Thanks! 🙂
It makes me so happy to see such love for Claire Keegan! In all of her works, she's only published about 140,000 words total. She wastes nothing in terms of word count. Small Things Like These is set in my hometown, and there's been such a buzz around the film. It's premiering at the Berlin film festival in February. Also, not sure if you're aware but there was a beautifully poignant film made based on Foster called The Quiet Girl (An Cailín Ciúin) too. Also a huge recommend from me 😊
Really enjoying your content. I've recently retired and can't wait to dive headlong into reading, which I've enjoyed all may life, but haven't had a lot of time for in the last few years... That all changes with 2024, so I'm really interested in books that might be outside my normal reading. I loved Anna Karenina, it's an epic novel.
Loved Small Things Like These! I have two short novels that are amazing: The Prime of Miss Brodie by Muriel Spark and The Pole by Ian McKewan. I did my master’s thesis on Morrison - Sula is amazing. The Bluest Eye, in my opinion, not so much.
Just finished Small Things Like These this morning .... WOW .. a great writing style and beautifully done. I felt as though I was in each scene, just sitting off to the side taking it all in..... Thanks for the recommendation on this one. Her writing is akin to one of my favorite Southern US authors, Pat Conroy. Just can't put the book down when you start.
I love your videos and your takes on books. It's nice that you're new here and into books that aren't only "viral". Hands down though, your outros are the best 😂
I just ordered Claire Keegan's 4 books, cant wait to read them. I love a good short book I can read in a single sitting. Once again thanks for the recommendation, this channel is quickly becoming my favourite book channel.
I found the writing of Never Let Me Go very mesmerising. It was a page turner but not in the same way as a thriller for example. It's hard to put down in a more subtle way.
You definitely need to read Crime and Punishment then. And those Keegan books sound great and love the simplicity of the covers they real draw you in. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽great book choices. And would love to know about these extra hobbies especially the baseball cards one 😂 my father played softball until he passed we use to travel with his team around Texas to all the softball ball game tournaments and mom mom got to go out of state with them several times. We have a big baseball collection including famous player’s autographs on cards and baseball.
Really enjoyed this, especially the Irish authors shoutouts -- not sure if you've read much Japanese literature but there's a lot of great stuff to discover. Haruki Murakami is fantastic and has published a bunch of books.
If you want to keep the trend of good Irish novels going, I highly recommend Panenka by Ronan Hession. I took away so many good quotes from it, about things like what love is and what it can be, what it means to exist, etc. It's one of those books that's just pleasant to spend time with. You're review on Small Things Like These reminded me of Panenka, so I'm definitely gonna read that one!
I apologize if I've already said this, but Mary: An Awakening of Terror by Nat Cassidy is AMAZING. I recommend the audiobook. It's literally my 5est 5 star book that I've read/listened to. The 5est. I understand that the TBR list, or in your case stack, can be overwhelming.... but listen to it so that I can hear you talk about it 🤣
I really love C. Keegan , as you said - she can put so much story in only 100 pages it’s incredible . I also read foster from her and I love it even more . I really hope she will write more .
Looks like you picked up some great books! You've definitely sold me in the Keegan books! If you end up liking dostoevsky, I highly recommend notes from underground. That, and crime and punishment are my two favorites of his. But he's a great writer for sure. Thanks for sharing!
If you can please review The Stone Angel. I hated this book in high school. I hated it so much I could barely read it. And then I read it at 30 ...and... well, I loved it so much I reread it right away. I love this list.
Thanks for another great video. I’ll look into some of those books, but I definitely should be on a book ban for now. I have too many books and no place to put them. I finished Carrie and I’m starting The Shining now.
Thanks for the content, really enjoying it. Have you read 'Shuggie Bain' by Douglas Stewart ? Seriously recommend it, one of the best books I've ever read. Keep up the good work, best wishes from Portsmouth, UK
Anna karenina: I have the penguin deluxe paperback edition. I loooove that set. paperback, deckled edges, French flaps on the cover, floppy! so nice to hold. I love the count of monte Cristo in that set you have. it's teal with orange masquerade masks all over it.
I was surprised by how quickly I read through Crime and Punishment, if you're looking for a less chunky Dostoevsky book. If The Master and Margarita isn't on your radar, it's russian lit that's fun, goofy, and isn't super bleak.
I think we saw the same Jack Edwards youtube video 😂😂 - I also ordered afterwards the bee sting and mayflies . Also I’m really curious if you will like Anna Karenina , not sure about it , but I’m pretty sure you will like Dostoyevskys crime and punishment .
Idk if you're aware, but JackintheBooks is Jack Edwards' second channel! So his main channel is just Jack Edwards. Also bookish content, some more longer form and themed stuff I think. I follow both and don't always check which videos are uploaded to what account, so I'm not entirely sure on the difference between the channels 🤭 but worth checking out his main channel as well, if you enjoy his content!
Nick, you’ve really found your groove with your videos. No silly gimmicks, no annoying music, and no sponsors. Just your reflections on books told eloquently and honestly. So, not only are you my favourite Bookstagrammer and Booktoker, but now you’re my favourite Booktuber!!!! @suzannes_book_reflections
I love this channel dude as someone who really wants to read more seeing make readers is a real bonus for me. Don't get me wrong I love female creators too but it's just a rarer thing. Would you be willing to do a bookshelf tour eventually mate
Saying you don’t know who Charlie is is kinda funny since it’s the main character. Perks is one of my favorite books. I read it when I was 19 and I reread it almost every year.
I walked into Costco the other day. the tvs are like RIGHT there... and on the tv... was nick. or ok it was some guy in a band that looked like nick ten years ago maybe. I was like... omg... maybe this was when nick was @Guitarsaresick or something... 🤔 lol
Vitamin D is toxic in super high levels. Now I think you are safe if you aren't taking a clearly reckless amount at a time. Also you would be vomiting and stuff if you overdosed. 2 or 3 vitamin D capsules should be fine. Stay safe
