I LOVE Annihilation and I cant wait until you read it. Please do yourself a favor and don't read about it or watch the movie until after you read the book only because it has a very weird and unique world that I think having a basis of beforehand would take away from the intrigue of the book.
Bro, I wish there were more booktubers like you! I find booktube, like any specific genre of anything to be very dogmatic. It doesn't seem like a lot of booktubers do these channels for the love of reading. They always have some political agenda they want to press on you. Speaking of Mormonism, I highly recommend the novel Mister Magic by Kiersten White. The author grew up Mormon but realized later in life how much it indoctrinates, manipulates, and controls people under its faith and got out of it and Mister Magic is a horror novel acting as a metaphor about that experience. It is so good.
Yes, once you get going in A Clockwork Orange it starts to make sense. I had never seen the movie so when I started reading it I was SUPER confused haha
I believe the first thing he wrote that has been published is The Long Walk. Different Seasons is awesome, but no Bachman works: Shawshank, Apt Pupil, The Body, & Breathing Method.
I believe On the Road is considered a modern day classic. From what I understand, you hit the nail on the head when you said that people find it slow because there is literally no storyline. It’s just a travel journal really.
Man, been binging your videos and you’re quickly becoming one of my favorite booktubers. As someone who appreciates the aesthetics of certain editions of books as well, those NYRB editions have become some of my favorites. That copy of Butchers crossing, in my opinion, is well worth the 4.99 price tag.
I read A Clockwork Orange in highschool, because I loved the movie, but I don't think I retained a single thing. I should reread it at some point. I was definitely too young for it back then, especially considering English is my second language, I probably didn't really understand it much. As for classics, it's definitely difficult to define a classic, but the notion that contemporary novels ('new books') can't be classics is ridiculous. There are plenty of novels that are (relatively) new and already considered classics. Cormac McCarthy's The Road, Donna Tartt's The Goldfinch, David Mitchell's Cloud Atlas, Kazuo Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's Half of a Yellow Sun. Just a few examples that pop up when you look for contemporary classics. And each genre has their own, like Oryx and Crake (2003) and Parable of the Sower (1993) for scifi. Station Eleven (2014) is an original take on survival/dystopian literature and is also considered by many to be a contemporary classic in its genre. And I realize most of these titles are from the '90's/early '00's and are are 25/30 years old by now, so 'new' is also subjective, but I'm sure there are newer titles that are considered classics as well. It's more about central themes that remain relevant and can stand the test of time, and/or adding something new to literature/its respective genre that would have a book be considered a classic. Bit of a rant, I know it wasn't your definition or opinion, but that last part of that specific explanation was a bit weird imo.
Would love to see a video where you deep dive into a single book; even some spoiler alert type reactions. I read The Yellow Wallpaper book you recommended and loved it, and I think a deep dive type of video on a book like that would be great!
On the road is fun, read it years ago. I'm currently reading the White Knights and will read the Yellow Wallpaper (both based on your recommendations). I'll also reread A Clockwork Orange and The 39 Steps soon. We have similar tastes I think, subbed!
I personally came out the other side of Annihilation thinking what the heck did I listen to, which apparently isn’t a completely uncommon reaction. I believe that the trilogy? gets less confusing the more books you read, I just haven’t picked them up yet but I am willing to give it a try.

The problem with Valley books is they are a for profit company and not a charity. As a buyer yes you will get books cheaper but selling anywhere else would probably net you more money.
Another great video Nick. Yes Butcher’s Crossing is indeed by the same John Williams who wrote Stoner. I read all 4 of his books back to back last year starting with Stoner. All excellent and yet very different. Hope you enjoy it. I don’t think I’ve ever DNF’d a single book that I’ve started reading. But I came close to doing that with On The Road. I really really disliked that book. Hugely underwhelming and for me totally overrated. But I think I’m in the minority. Good up the great work mate!

A Clockwork Orange book language was so hard for me to get it’s a good story sick twisted story but the language I can’t even explain it. It’s Russian influenced gang slang type of language…some words I just skip over.
I keep putting that one off cause I've read Butchers Crossing (top 5 books) and Augustus (again simple and amazing) and Stoner is the last of his books
For A Clockwork Orange, I highly recommend keeping a NADSAT dictionary handy to learn the slang as you go. I finally read Annihilation last year. It's phenomenal!
I just thrifted a copy of On The Road as well! Although I think I paid $1.99 at the goodwill. Those thrift prices seem high but I’m in America so maybe that’s not bad for Canada? Also your little outro jumbled words are my favorite 😂❤️
I also just thrifted On The Road for 1.99 at Goodwill, goodwill is the only place that sells vintage books this cheaply. I never go to Value Village for books because its always weirdly expensive. Apparently, this seems to also be true Canada
Yes - On The Road is the quintessential Beat Movement books. It is about the narrator and his friend traveling and visiting. I loved it, but I read it when I was young. Incidentally, Truman Capote said about On The Road, That’s not writing. That’s typing.” Lol Stoner is great. WASP academic despair.
Nope, Blaze wasn’t in Different Seasons. The Body, Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, Apt Pupil and The Breathing Method where the stories from that collection 😊
I just finished The Martian by Andy Weir. It was alright, a little too scientific/technical but enjoyed the story part of it. I'm going into a mystery(blind) book(A time traveler's theory of relativity by Nicole Valentine)that was covered up from the library so I will see how that is.
I believe that everything King has published Richard Bachman was written in his teen years. Or at least several years before he started writing Carrie.
It is very helpful if you read clockwork orange with the wiktionary , there are “ The Nadsat slang words “ explained . By the End of the book you are fluent .
A classic car is 25 years old, right? So a classic book should be 25 years old. (Honestly, everyone has an opinion about classics, I think it’s always up for interpretation 🤷🏽♀️).
