Weekend in the Trenches

One day we were out exploring and Diva says, lets go down this dirt road and see if there is a place to metal detect. I preferred to keep looking for a spot to collect shark teeth, but I'm a team player so I grudgingly agreed. 10 minutes down the dusty old road we saw a deep trench along side of the road and the dirt was spread out on the other side of the trench. From the road it looked like there was gravel all over the place, but we needed a closer look. We put on our boots and approached the trench. When we looked down we saw gravel pouring out of the edges. It was like a dream! I was salivating to jump down in the trench but we still had to look at the dirt on the other side. The ditch was pretty deep but we walked way around to get to a shallow spot to cross and we quickly realized there was layer rock everywhere and not a footprint anywhere. We took our time and enjoyed every second of easy collecting. Almost everything was broken but it is so fun just walking around picking up teeth, it didn't even matter. Several hours later the sun was getting low in the sky and we decided we better get down into the trench to see if there was anything down there. Just like the topside, we found broken stuff hanging out of the wall but it got too dark to see so we left, knowing we would be back the next morning. We returned at the crack of noon the next day (we are not early risers) and the trench was the way we remembered it. Chocked full of gravel and broken teeth, but so fun we lost track of time yet again. We collected until dark again, vowing to return the next day after work. It was hard to concentrate on work the next day, knowing that we would be collecting that site again. We showed up that evening, and to our utter disappointment, the entire trench was filled in! What a grievous loss! I can't believe our luck at having found a spot to collect for the weekend, mere hours before it was gone forever. We found some really good teeth there so it seems like a rescue mission now! I suppose it is better to have collected and lost, then never to have collected at all.

There’s so many construction sites that are being covered up with tons of fossils in them, it’s so sad. 😢

@Great White 14 its possible but not likely, at least in that video anyway. I found those kinda spread apart but on the same day. If they were associated they would be stacked on top of each other. also, the geologic formations here in the Charleston SC area are reformulated, which means they have been eroded, redistributed, and redeposited by the ocean and prehistoric rivers into the gravel band we see today. that process would have spread out any megalodon teeth that fossilized in one spot from a dead megalodon. the chandler bridge is a different story - that formation is the same as when it was deposited during the oligocene so there can be associated specimens in there, but its too old for meg teeth. associated angustidens could be in it though!

Hi!) Can I ask you, did you know someone from Alabama, whatever who, a paleontologist, amateur fossil hunter or enthusiast, who could help me with shark teeth identification? Just for case - I need help with some paleogene shark teeth that I found in Western Syberia, and I know that Alabama has similar complex of shark species. The most of teeth from my collection I've already identify by my self, but some quantity of them get me trouble, so I will glad for any help. Thanks in advance and sorry for bad language))
