I highly recommend Sean McMeekin's "July 1914" for everything in the run up to the start of the war

Micah with no Mr. Rogers sweater? The world is surely ending. Ha ha, same weirdly warm weather in Chicago! I think it hit 60. I was in shorts! I love it. But, yeah, it throws me off that it's November and dark early because we turned back the clocks. Same for me with All Quiet On The Western Front. I've heard of it forever but never got around to reading it. I also had no idea it was a translated work. I'm sure I will read it sometime. I am not in the mental space for dark/depressing stuff right now. That's the kind of thing I'd need to read in spring/summer, to balance out the sadness with real life sun & warmth. (If that makes any sense.)

(Yay, first! Does RU-vid send you a prize or something? Everyone always rushes and rejoices be first. It's so weird. LOL!)

It's finally cold enough for the sweaters, grateful for that, haha. I definitely understand what you mean about needing to balance out the darker, more heavy reading with the summer instead of the winter.

I also read All Quiet on the Western Front for the first time this month for World War November and LOVED it. Well I may have read it in school but I don't remember anything from those days anymore. LOL I found it incredibly gripping, heartbreaking, and frightening. I think it's a remarkable tribute to all the young men who fought and serves as a stark warning to humanity to steer clear of war at any expense.

I completely agree with you! I have read very little about the first world war, and so I felt that it brought much of the true atmosphere to life. Truly harrowing.

Lytton Strachey was famous for introducing a more critical eye on the Victorian grandees, so enjoy that.

I am curious to see how his style reads! I'm hoping to make a comparison video once I get his biography read between his and a few of my other favorites.

I imagine he will still read as quite ponderous to 21st century eyes. But do let us know!@@MicahCummins

Highly recommend Meyer's World Undone if you're looking for a one volume history of WWI. Also Massie's Dreadnought for the naval origins of WWI. Both have sequels I haven't read yet. Sounds like a good October for you.

Thanks for the recommendations! I have a copy of Dreadnought on my shelves, so maybe I will start there.

I listened to GJ Meyer’s A World Undone over the summer which was my first WWI book. I think my next will be Eugene Rogan’s The Fall of the Ottomans which focuses on the war in the east.

Both titles sound really fascinating! I need to read more about the war in the east too. I might add that to my TBR for this year. Thanks!

Im interested on that big book of Victoria. Quite interesting biography. I'll add it to my list. Btw, do you sometimes also read sci fi or fantasy? Or historic novel?

I hope you really enjoy it! I have actually started back into reading more general fiction/historical fiction these last few days and have been really enjoying it!
