I completely agree. As somebody who suffers from bipolar disorder, it's so hard and awkward to talk about mental health in society- it's considered taboo. Making light of it (in the right manner and circumstances) to show that "Hey, we're real people who can make jokes, open up, and have dialogues to express our struggles" is, in my mind, a truly effective approach.

John mulaney writes the jokes, but then changes a lot of the punchlines when it goes live. It started out as a prank, but everyone loved it, so they kept it going

John Mulaney (Shy the lawyer) is the one who writes the Stefon jokes, and he switches up the punchlines last minute to throw Bill Hader off. It's why Stefon reacted as he did to the " I don't trust anyone who stomach touches the ground" joke; that was actually Bill's shrug and chuckle because he didn't see the line coming and didn't know what to think

Justin Johnson He does suffer from it. He was recently diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. Also his dad died in one of the Twin Towers on 9/11. He has had anxiety most of his young life. He is not making fun of it. Rather, he is trying to make his way through it the only way he knows how.

I wrote a similar comment earlier. I have mental illness, so does most of my family, and I found what Pete said hilarious and relatable. But it’s also true that brains sometimes react to things as danger, even if you objectively know they aren’t. This can happen because of a random misfiring, but it’s even more common when you’ve experienced trauma. My dad dove on the street in the middle of fifth avenue while wearing a full suit... Just because of a loud noise. But he was also a soldier, and saved lives while getting shot. Reacting to something as danger - yep, even something like missing a basket, or failing a test - doesn’t mean you’re weak. And it can absolutely be a problem, even if you try to convince yourself it isn’t. I am super happy to hear that that motto works for your brother in law, and it probably works for some other people too. But similar thoughts sometimes keep other people from getting help they really need. I just thought that was worth mentioning too. :)
