Not to be controversial 😁, but which is worse: skipping fantasy prologues, or skipping the songs and poems in a fantasy novel?
@Gruso57
@Gruso57 3 месяца назад
Both are cardinal sins lol. But if I had to choose, prologues has to be worse. Seems like a vital part of a book to skip. Poems and songs are fun, but not as crucial to the plot.

Prologues. The author usually writes it for a reason. While I can see skipping the songs since we can't hear but I love poetry.

I am so very thankful you are enjoying ATLA. This show was fundamental to my childhood and it held up for me as an adult without a doubt. I would love to see some breakdowns of your favorite episodes maybe on your other channel? The Beach is one of mine in season 3. Reviewing adaptations is a cool idea. Would you consider doing older films like To Kill a Mockingbird? I always expect to be disappointed nowadays so I rarely walk away wounded, just a bit weary. The exception was Witcher Season 2 which I actually had expectations for and thought they were going to nail it. I got so mad I almost threw something at the TV, very unusual for me (Blood of elves was my book of the year for 2020). This week I was listening to the audiobook for Ron Chernow’s Washington biography. The narrator does Leto’s epitaphs in God Emperor. I can’t condone treachery, but if Benedict Arnold’s story has ended with him shooting General Gates with a cannonball I think he could have been given a pass. I was reading a book called Japanese pilgrimage by Oliver Statler which I enjoyed very much. Happy Reading!

-I recently finished Voice of War and enjoyed it quite a bit. Chrys might be my favorite character. Looking forward to starting the sequel soon. -I really want to start Sun Eater, but there are so many books I want to read and so little time! Love the covers, especially Kingdoms of Death (just stunning!). -Welcome to the ATLA fandom! It’s one of my favorite animated series ever (no spoilers: it totally sticks the landing, by the way). So damn good! I will give the Netflix series a try. I saw a clip of Prince Zuko and Iroh, and I was pretty impressed with If it doesn’t work for me, at least I still have my DVDs of the original series…which may be due for a re-watch. -I re-read The Lightning Thief last year. I’m wary of some of the choices they have made with the Netflix series but will give it a chance. -Still need to read Dune. And I call myself a sci-fi fan! I hope you enjoy the movie. Thanks for sharing and happy reading!

Yeah i saw a whole thread on a book Facebook group about people skipping the prologue. So weird. That's part of the story!!! Ive discovered there are various weird reading practices out there. There's a whole group that apparently just wanders around randomly buying books without reading the cover or trying to see what it's about because they are intensely scared of spoilers or something. SMH. I get buying blind sometimes but definitely not often

I think you've sold me on Blackwater, once I've cleared up Mayfair Witches reread maybe. The more the whole prologue thing goes on, the more I spot people who "skip prologues" but actually mean they skip prefaces. I mean to continue with Sun Eater later this year. I liked the first one, but it was too hyped as "the new Dune" (not by you!) to me and didn't met those expectations. I'll pick up the second one with readjusted expectations whenever I'm in the right mood for what it really is. Very much looking forward to your video with Shauna Lawless when I have a minute. She's really cool, and her series is awesome (Cornwell meets Gwynne) - I get the feeling you'll rave about it once you've read it. This is the week we find how good Shōgun will really be.

An author roundtable w/Ruocchio and Pierce Brown will always be something I push for. So many great topics to touch on: the complexities of writing from an unreliable narrator, why Roman History felt so right to blend into Sci-Fi, what kind of philosophical themes they felt were pertinent to explore in their works, etc. I’m a Philosophy, Politics & Econ major so this is the kind of stuff I nerd out on. After reading through the comments, it's obvious some people don't know what a prologue is. A discussion of how the author decided to write the book, or how he got it published, his life story, or especially something written by someone other than the author are not prologues. They are introductions or maybe acknowledgements. A prologue is part of the story. It's like a chapter 0. It may be about a character's back story, or set up a situation in the book, or just be world building. In any case it's something the author thinks is important for the reader to know. No reading the prologue is like not reading the first chapter of a book. 🤦

Skipping prologues makes sense when they are written for people who have already read the book. My edition of The Shining has a prologue written by Stephen King in 2001 where he talks about the ending. Thank god I skipped it.
@devyn7853

Exactly. Happened to me once, spoiler in the prologue so have skipped them every time since. Be especially careful when it's a 20th or 30th anniversary re-printing, they assume everyone read it already.

I have the same edition and that's an introduction, not a prologue. I never read those until after I've read the novel as they can contain spoilers. The same goes for forewords. Save those for the end.

introductions and prologues are different though. An Introduction is nonfiction introducing a work and giving it context, a prologue is part of the story itself.

I completed The Trials of Empire, and well, I thought it was just ok. I’m disappointed because book 1 was really good and I loved book 2. There were a lot of good things in Trials, but also a lot of meh things. The supernatural stuff didn’t hit as hard as before. I limped across the finish line with this one and I hate that.

To me a prologue is like fake excitement before chapter one starts and then you have to wait for the plot to gear up after that, especially when there's multiple pov's and you have to wait for them to all get together.

Don’t nitpick Dune. Adaptation, remakes, and long awaited sequels are not the originals. If you want to have the same dune experience you had before go read dune. This movie is not that. It’s something new. Of course a strong argument could be made that they should never do remakes adaptation and equals to anything with a fandom. Fans suck and maybe anything they ever do for them won’t be appreciated by them. Fans suck

"Fans suck." Yeah, that's the attitude for success with adaptation. Just ask Amazon.
@boomerbyll3004
@boomerbyll3004 3 месяца назад
@@asdfasdf5695 well I think it’s true. Maybe instead of redoing what’s been done we should let those stories be and just get new stories. We don’t need another spider man movie that just does the origins story again. We don’t need another Harry Potter. Do something new. The fans are going to hate what they do anyway.
@asdfasdf5695

@@boomerbyll3004 If these studios would have just a little bit of humility and respect for the source material and its built-in fanbase, most fans wouldn't be as vitriolic as they are nowadays. Most adaptation showrunners either despise the original work or think they're better than the creators. If that attitude disappeared, so would the hate-baiting and schadenfreude when the adaptations fail.
@boomerbyll3004
@boomerbyll3004 3 месяца назад
@@asdfasdf5695 I mean do you really want that though. If you want accurate dune just read dune. It’s right there on your shelf collecting dust. Read it and have a great time. Why adapt anything if it’s just a scene for scene recreation? It’s probably better for everyone if they just make new stories instead. There is no way to faithfully recreate the dune in my head. And if they did, it would not be the dune you envisioned in your head. They are better off not even trying to do that.
@asdfasdf5695
@asdfasdf5695 3 месяца назад
@@boomerbyll3004 Nobody ever said it had to be 100% accurate. If you're literally breaking the spine of the story all for the sake of your own ambition or pushing political narratives, that's when you lost most fans.
