Weekly Vlog: Significant Impairment or Distress

Bright Line Eating

This week, I want to weave together three topics for you.
First: I’m co-writing a book chapter on ultra-processed food addiction for an academic book on weight loss. I’m writing right now about the 11 DSM-5 criteria for substance use disorder. Research indicates that ultra-processed food addiction meets each of these criteria. A large meta-analysis of hundreds of studies showed that about 20 percent of people in the general population qualify for a diagnosis of food addiction.
But the average person has 2.38 of these 11 symptoms, and to get a diagnosis, you only need to have 2 of them. A mild diagnosis is 2-3 symptoms, moderate 4-5, and a severe case has 6 or more symptoms.
When you hear what the symptoms are, it’s pretty easy to imagine that a lot of people have them. One symptom, for example, is eating more food than you intended to. Another is repeated failed attempts to cut back or a persistent desire to cut back. The whole dieting industry is built on this.
The point is this: it would seem that the average person, with 2.38 of these symptoms, would have a food addiction. But they don’t, because having these symptoms isn’t enough. There has to be a pattern of use that leads to significant clinical impairment or distress.
The people with two or more symptoms often don’t meet that benchmark. They may have tried to cut back or perhaps they notice themselves overindulging, but they’re not stressed out about it. They just move on with their lives. Many people have what we could call an addictive relationship with food-but they don’t have a food addiction. Food addiction needs that clinically significant impairment or distress.
The second thing I want to share has to do with a person I’ve been talking to lately who is struggling. She has a fair bit of weight to lose, but she’s young enough that it’s not impacting her health. She’d like to look better, from her perspective, and she’s distressed. And, when she eats addictively, she loses the ability to function in her life. So she is experiencing clinically significant impairment or distress.
Part of her doesn’t believe in food addiction. She thinks it’s a choice, and she should just be able to control it. She thinks she could quit if she just had more moral fiber. She’s been trying for years. Last time we talked, I reminded her that the science shows it IS an addiction, and the belief that she’s choosing to eat these foods is erroneous.
There was a professor at NYU, Rodolfo Llinas, who did an experiment: he would try to point his toe forward while electrodes placed in the motor cortex of his brain were telling his foot to flex back. He ran the experiment over and over. He was horrified, not because he could not override those electrodes and point his toe, but because his brain kept telling him that he was changing his mind and meant to flex his foot back. The same is true with my friend. Her brain is telling her she’s choosing, but she’s not.
Another example: Let’s say I told you there was a bag with five billion dollars waiting for you up forty flights of stairs but the rule is that to get it, you have to hold your breath the whole time you climb the stairs. You couldn’t do it. You would eventually breathe, and it would seem like your choice-but it really wasn’t. You were capitulating to the demands of your brain which then manipulated you into thinking that you were choosing to breathe.
Lastly: I was speaking to a group last week, and I said to them how grateful I was that I both like and want my Bright recovery. This way of life is something that I deeply appreciate for its structure, for the support system, for everything about it that allows me to be the person I most want to be.
In addiction literature, there’s a lot about wanting and liking. Initially, when we’re not in an addictive state, we want flour, sugar, and other foods only a little. But then, we eat them and like them a lot. As the brain wires itself for addiction, the wanting gets bigger and bigger and the liking gets smaller and smaller. Studies have shown that people with obesity intensely want ultra-processed food, sugar, and flour. But when they’re eating it, the parts of the brain that are associated with liking are muted. They don’t even like it that much anymore.
Lots of people want to lose weight and want to try Bright Line Eating. But when they realize it’s more involved than they thought, a full lifestyle and not a simple diet, they don’t like it and don’t want to do it. Some people grow to like it, Some grow to love it. What a gift that is!
So people like my friend may think they have a weight problem... [ Click here for full summary: ble.life/d8sKht ]

I had an absolutely fabulously weighed and measured breakfast and lunch! Then I met up with friends and they had ordered pizza, I can honestly say I did not want any, my friend grabbed a huge slice and slapped it one a plate for me and out of courtesy i ate the cheese and pepperoni... I do not know how to say no thank you yet because I am afraid to invite people into my journey. The reason behind that is because I don't want to be asked about how many pounds I've lost so far or if I'm still dieting... just a whole ton of reasons that I'd rather keep this plan between me and my confidant. Anyway, I really want this and I like it! I need to grow confidence to proclaim that I'm not eating that and just face the judgement that comes with it! Here's a question, why is there so much judgement when a large person like myself tries to diet? Why aren't people more encouraging and helpful? Why do people scoff?

This was helpful. Last week was an incredible stressful work week. On Thursday night I went grocery shopping and found myself picking up a bag of chips, putting it in the cart, and buying it (first time in years). But at no point did I feel I was in any conscious control. I was watching myself do it. I went home and ate chips for dinner and it wasn't satisfying and made me feel physically ill.

I watched a Carolyn Myss video where she speaks about the different levels of consciousness. I've been dealing with being off program for quite a while, and I think part of it is how isolated I felt when I was full on the program I was the only person not eating dessert. My whole social life had nothing to do with food anymore but everybody else was still eating the way I used to eat. I am looking at the way I have fallen into some old patterns, through the eyes of addiction, and through the eyes of the society, the social circle that I'm in Are there relationships I need to let go off? In order to stay on BLE . There are so many layers to this food addiction thing

I forget how you phrased it, but regarding the missing piece that prevents people from being diagnosed with a food addiction. As you stated the criteria, it occurred to me that the criteria is there for many people, it is just a long time coming. It takes a while to get diabetes. It takes longer to lose your foot or find yourself on dialysis. For most addictions, the time from start to being incapacitated is much shorter. However, my claim would be that for food addition it is there none the less, it just takes longer than the medical community expects it to happen and because of that it often gets all wrapped up with "old age" symptoms.

Susan, wouldn’t diabetes, heart disease, and other food related physical illnesses qualify as impairment and distress? Maybe a reframe?

We do acknowledge that Bright Line Eating is not the right solution for everyone. While many find success, occasionally it's not the right fit. We're curious to know if you were implementing the program on your own, or if you were in the Boot Camp or Bright Lifers membership and sought the guidance and support of our coaches or our community. Either way, we hope you have found success and are healthy and happy! 🧡

@@Brightlineeating no, I did it on my own from the book. By day 7 the cravings were overwhelming. It was not enough food, and I followed it to the letter. And I don't have enough money to pay for a program. Why sell the book if it's just an enticement to pay more money for a program?
@Brightlineeating
@Brightlineeating Месяц назад
@@hedgiegal3340 It is one of those things that is different for everyone, especially depending on your susceptibility score. There are many people who have been able to live a Bright Life from just using the book; however, some people do need more support. After writing the book and discovering some folks needed more, Susan created the Bright Line Eating courses to help those that needed it. As a gentle reminder, we do offer at least 10 full scholarships every Boot Camp 2.0. If this is of interest to you, please be sure to apply. We empathize with financial hardships and understand not everyone can invest in the course at this time. There are also a number of 12-step programs for food addiction that can serve you at no cost. Food Addicts in Recovery Anonymous (FA) uses the same sugar/flour/meals/quantities approach to food that you’re used to, and they have meetings online throughout the week. You can find them at FoodAddicts.org. The largest (and original) 12-step food program is Overeaters Anonymous. They’re at oa.org. 🧡🧡
