I cannot believe how dead on of a thin lizzy impression this song is. Absolutely remarkable. These guys are nothing less of gods. They can litereally do absolutely anything musically and it will be flawless
2 years ago my father passed away the other day I went to go get a tattoo (I was getting a pocket watch and have his birthday 7:02 be the time) as soon as I sat down this song started playing. My name is Gabrielle and me and my father were so close, the lyrics that make me think he played this as a sign is "I didn't mean to make you cry" and "I'll love you till the day I die" regardless to say I was pretty happy leaving the tattoo place.
I don't mean to be so insolent, But you know it's cause I love ya, The foundation of my malevolence, You know I'd never hurt you babe, Sometimes I might get edgy, But a man can sometimes be that way, Nobody's perfect baby, And I'll always love you anyway, Ohh, Gabrielle, The sun is shining in your eyes, Ohh, Gabrielle, I didn't mean to make you cry, Ohh, my sweet baby doll, I put you above everything, Ohh, Gabrielle, I love you till the day I die, Sometimes I feel like my old man, You know that's hard for me to say, And sometimes I just lose my head, Don't know why I get that way, I want to keep you happy darling, It could only work out that way, Nobody's perfect baby, And I'll always love you anyway, Ohh, Gabrielle, The sun is shining in your eyes, Ohh, Gabrielle, I didn't mean to make you cry, Ohh, my sweet baby doll, I put you above everything, Ohh, Gabrielle, I love you till the day I die, Gabrielle, Oh, my my my my my my my my my my my my my my my my my my my.... Gabrielle, Well, Gabrielle, You know I love you baby, Do nothing to hurt you baby, But you know I got to love you anyway, Oh, Gabrielle, you're so nice, You know I- I love you baby, Oh, my my my my my my my my my my my my my my my my my my my.... Ohh, Gabrielle, The sun is shining in your eyes, Ohh, Gabrielle, I didn't mean to make you cry, Ohh, my sweet baby doll, I put you above everything, Ohh, Gabrielle, I love you till the day I die, Gabrielle. (i figure that someone has to be the person to comment the lyrics, it may as well be me : p)
I’d never heard this til I saw them the other night. I was so fucking floored. This band is the best of my generation, and I’m into some critically acclaimed, “serious” shit. Nobody else can do what ween can do, but ween can do what everyone else can
I'd just like to add my 2 cents regarding the impression aspect of this song. I have absolutely no clue about Thin Lizzy and had never (consciously) heard a single song from them up till 2 minutes ago, when I randomly clicked on "The Boys Are Back in Town". Within the first ~30 seconds I thought to myself "Wait, where have I heard this before?" and it hit me that it was "Gabrielle" by Ween. It's crazy how good this impression is if someone who's only heard *LESS THAN 1 MINUTE* of Thin Lizzy can instantly recognise and appreciate it.
I think all the Gabrielle's here are just impressed that someone can pronounce our name correctly, instead of "Gabriel, GaBRELLE, or abigail" (it happened once)
When I heard this song for the first time, I totally thought that Ween dug-up and dusted-off some long-forgotten Thin Lizzy b-side or import deep-cut that wasn't originally on a US-release version of one of their albums and was utterly taken aback when I learned that this was a 100% Ween original composition that was just done in the Thin Lizzy spirit!!!
someone else said it first but it needs repeating "this is the best song thin lizzy never wrote" Sometimes i feel like my old man you know thats hard for me to say and sometimes i lose my head i dont know why i get that way......
Ween can be anybody they want to be. Sometimes the Ween songs are better than the group being emulated. The following list of songs support that notion. I got this list compiled by fans off of reddit. The song you are listening to now (Gabrielle) is an absolute dead ringer for Thin Lizzy. I've not listen to every single song here, you be the judge. When I first heard "It's gonna be a Long Night", I could have sworn one of my Motorhead discs wound up in a Week jewel case. Is has happened. Put the Coke on my Dick - ACDC Demon Sweat - Genesis/Pink Floyd Shamemaker - Blink 182 Beacon Light - Foo Fighters I Gots a Weasel - Louie Armstrong Take Me Away - The Doors Falling Out - The Beatles Light Me Up - Ricky Martin It's Gonna Be a Long Night - Motorhead Bananas and Blow - Jimmy Buffett Gabrielle - Thin Lizzy Baby Bitch - Elliott Smith (although it came out before Elliott Smith got popular) The Argus - Led Zeppelin Monique the Freak - Prince Did You See Me - Pink Floyd Don't get too close to my fantasy - Bowie Pandy Fackler-Steely Dan u/florentinepogen u/cincycobra Old Man Thunder-Bob Seger
Thanks for this list! I would add (and this is, like, just my opinion, mang): LMLYP - Prince Voodoo Lady - Santana Woman and Man - Santana My Own Bare Hands - Red Hot Chili Peppers Boys Club - Michael McDonald Your Party - (80s) David Bowie Roses are Free - Phish Can U Taste the Waste - Nine Inch Nails Dr Rock - Judas Priest Who Dat - Paul Simon Friends - Pet Shop Boys Ocean Man - Ringo Starr Even if You Don't - Paul McCartney Falling Out - John Lennon Flutes of Chi - George Harrison
What about... Drifter in the Dark - Neil Young The Fucked Jam - Noise rock in general Up on the hill - Acapella bands, Olivia Newton John Falling Out - (early) The Beatles Jobba Road, Transitions - The Grateful Dead A Tear for Eddie - Jeff Beck, Pink Floyd or even Funkadelic
that moment when this guy you've kind of sort of been spending time getting to know. a guy you want to help climb out of his darkness tells you to check out this song, and you make him play it while you share a blunt when you haven't had a blunt in two years. but you can't be together because it's just the way it is. haha this melts me tho. like ween even spelled my name how I spell it and pronounce it correctly. ahhhh. :) :)
Kinda deep considering the song is a parody on an abusive narcissist who's too stupid to realize it. The only thing he says about Gabrielle is "she's not perfect" and he's the sun and that's why she's crying.
