Over the years, I have gravitated towards different Ween songs as my favorites (The Grobe, Back to Basom, Birthday Boy, Chocolate Town, Nan, Baby Bitch, Transdermal Celebration, Israel) but I always seem to gravitate back towards this one.
They could've ended The Pod with Pork Roll Egg and Cheese but instead did that with The Stallion Pt. 2 for shits and giggles in the same manner. But if you ask me,the closing tracks on all the other Ween albums were good choices.
"Don't get too close to my fantasy. Don't be afraid to clutch the hand of your creator. Stare into the lions eyes and if you taste the candy you'll get to the surprise.."
this is my favorite ween song the whistle solo has to be one of the most melancholy things that i've heard in one of their tunes and brings back memories of my grandfather who would always come up with whistle tunes after picking me up from kindergarden. really reminds me of him. also the chord progression is amazing, and the vocal melody is great. oh yeah did i mention that this is my favorite ween song?
Renee Barcode It's a Bowie/Ziggy tribute. The style is Ziggy Stardust and the lyrics are pure Labyrinth. It's just around the corner, the destiny that I embrace with you... Stare into the lions eyes and if you taste the candy, you'll get to the surprise I've always been amazed by the number of people who thought this was about molestation but I shouldn't be. It came out in 1992, when the child sex abuse hysteria and PMRC was still raging on. Anything that says daddy, kiss, clutch the hand of your creator and fantasy will be twisted into automatic perversion and incest.
No, some have also thought it was about narnia but it is frighteningly about a predator and its prey. A look into the eyes of the narrators sick perception of love and connection with viewing a kid as a son. Reread the lyrics..
Gene said that the song has “a perverted side” but it’s not about child molestation, they say it’s just supposed to be a tribute to grandiloquent songs like Bohemian Rhapsody or Ziggy Stardust
Don't quiver little boy Your daddy's with you now It won't be long anyhow It's just around the corner The destiny that I embrace with you Hoo-hoo-hoo Ohhh! Don't get too close to my fantasy Don't be afraid to clutch the hand of your creator Stare into the lion's eyes And if you taste the candy You'll get to the surprise Stay calm little dreamer And drift off into dreams The gentle kiss of night Is better than it seems It's just around the corner Close your eyes and soon you'll be with me Hee-hee-hee Ohhh! Don't get too close to my fantasy Don't be afraid to clutch the hand of your creator Stare into the lion's eyes And if you taste the candy You'll get to the surprise Don't get too close to my fantasy Don't be afraid to clutch the hand of your creator Stare into the lion's eyes And if you taste the candy You'll get to the surprise Ohhh! Don't get too close to my fantasy Don't be afraid to clutch the hand of your creator Stare into the lion's eyes And if you taste the candy You'll get to the surprise Ohhh! (Ha ha ha, woo, fuck it)
i feel like i gotta make a comment on this... what a good cd... i'm almost40... i was listening to this when i was about 18.... brings back many memories.. all drug induced.. some of which i remember, some i do not...
You Bowie fans are right! I'm going to go a bit further. Jack Black is the guest lead singer of a David Bowie tribute band doing a "triumphant return tour" gig in Palmdale, California with guest band Spinal Tap working the concessions booths.
This song and Space Oddity have the same opening Chord progression- Fmaj7, Em7. Also, if you turn the sound off of Labyrinth and start this song at the third lion roar, you’ll get to the surprise!
I saw them live in Essen, Germany in 1997. Really small club, about 200 stoners there. Awesome show, Dean asked us to pass our J to them on stage. I recall this song especially, the rest is kinda blurred...
Anyone that says it's about child molestation, they're wrong. Ween never revealed the real meaning behind the song but they still admitted to it NOT being about child molestation. I personally think it's about drugs. "If you taste the candy, you'll get to the surprise." If you go on a 'good trip' from whatever drug it is, you'll end up experiencing something new or seeing something new, thus meaning 'you'll get to the surprise.'
if you go to the official ween website it is confirmed that it is a perverted song and thats all they give on it. so yes...its about a child moelstor sadly. bad taste
death of the author bro, it doesn't matter what they were or were not probably thinking or intending when they wrote the song -- that's the beauty of art, it's open to audience interpretation after the fact and the majority consensus is that there's more than enough substantial evidence to prove this song is about molestation even if it wasn't their original intention. it makes sense too, i always interpret it as a send-up of nerdy '70s prog bands that take themselves and their "aRt" too seriously w/o realizing the subtext of the lyrics leaking into and undercutting the seriousness of the track. but you're definitely allowed to have your opinion, just as long as you know you're wrong lol jk
I often wonder how at the age of 40 I would respond to DMT. It's been over a decade since. I've come a long way. I don't dismiss the enlightenment it has given me in getting here.
I know that many people say its about molestation... and I see why, I mean shit that's easy to think. but after listening a few times I've come to a muuuuch deeper possible conclusion lol I can see it being about a young kid whose dad is a soldier so he doesn't get to see him too much, which leads him to slightly suicidal thoughts (fantasy as in death) and struggles with drug addiction (heroin) for instance the lions eyes can be the desire to use, and the candy as in the needle etc. and the surprise being the orgasmic high that many describe as the heroin feeling. and he also is questioning his own faith in God. (hand of your creator). If you really truly listen to the song and think, you may see where I'm coming from. or maybe I'm just a very abstract thinker idk
You're a bit far off, but far enough to not be mainstream. Try some lacanian interpretation. I see it as the illusion of the big Other. It's quite nice and comforting. I can see it related to Christianity, in the sense that it drives one towards the taboo of the self. Too close, even, which is why you'll need a lot of Lacan to actually go through it. I usually recommend some Rorty and Zizek for a bit of psychotherapy. The good thing about these authors is that they won't actually give you the answer, which is the whole meaning of "surprise" as intended in this song. Surprise yourself, but don't lose the other, don't lose your history.
Don't quiver little boy Your daddy's with you now It won't be long anyhow It's just around the corner The destiny that I embrace with you Don't get 2 close to my fantasy Don't be afraid to clutch the hand of your creator Stare into the lion's eyes And if u taste the candy You'll get 2 the surprise Stay calm little dreamer And drift off into dreams The gentle kiss of night Is better than it seems It's just around the corner Close your eyes and soon you'll be with me
This song is 100% about molestation. I don't know how anyone is arguing that this would be beyond the pale for Ween, who sing about gang rape and kids dying; that's their brand of edgy humor and whether or not it aged well into 2021 is up to you. It's a spot-on send-up of 70's prog and Bowie, and given how creepy a lot of dudes still into prog rock were back in the early 90s that made it pretty funny back then, well, at least to me.
For me, it’s not that it’s too taboo for ween, it’s that it’s too obvious. Ween loves putting in these super obvious lines into their songs that would make you think it’s about one thing but if you pay attention, it’s clearly about another. It’s also worth noting that they were fans of the John Lennon strategy of writing meaningless lyrics and watching people attempt to decipher it.
At least someone said that it's a style parody of '70s prog. Some guy was talking about dream pop, shoegaze, and post punk, which is just fucking stupid. I think you nailed it with the molestation thing, and now I'll never listen to it the same way.
The start of this song reminds me of what my Mum used to say:) love you Mum RIP I guess , always Mum xo(she stayed with me) she’d say - my destiny was waiting for me around the corner Also she was amazing and so many weird Croatian customs/superstitions , - when you sleep in a room you’ve never slept in , to count the corners of the ceiling b4 sleep. Strange... what’s with the corners today... I left a friend alone yesterday an they snooping on my Facebook, I hope nothing strange or strangely normal went down few hours b4 I posted pic of me an dog, just rambling now, Well thank you now I will be checking inn I missed some people’s bad :). (I found page open on my Facebook... annoying but anyway secrets are not something I have anyway, that’s why it’s annoying) I’m open talk about anything and I really dislike dishonesty or shifty behaviour, I didn’t say anything (about them snooping) and also being honest doesn’t mean I tell ya the colour an consistency of my pooz But hey I would if they only asked... I come to a conclusion it’s something they don’t want to hear anyway (an also undefined)
Is candy the heroin, or is it the surprise??? I know the fantasy is death and the lions eyes are the high, but I can't figure out which one is the heroin. Hmmmm.
