Weezer - Weezer (Blue Album) | FIRST REACTION 

The songs aren’t “satirical”, they’re just from the perspective of characters who have ugly personalities. Satire implies that Rivers is not empathetic to them at all, and is just painting a caricature. You’re supposed to see the obvious toxic mindset of the guy of “no one else”, but are also being tempted to relate to his emotions, and then that causes you to reflect on yourself and see how the seeds of this fucked up stuff is in you. We all have an instinct to wall off and protect what we love. This kind of art is dying right now because people only seem to see art through the filter of political statements. You have to be pointing at something and saying whether it’s good or bad, but when you play in the space between those things you can reflect deeper truths about them.

One small call out about “Only in Dreams” is Coumo has stated the song is actually about his romance with his creative process as opposed to an actual person. The creation at times feels close enough to be fully realized but still just outside his grasp. Great song

This album was one of the greats of the early/mid 90’s! It speaks to every young person (mostly male I concede) filled with self doubt, apprehension about the future, and social awkwardness. Yet its wrapped up in a catchy, pop-rock, post-grunge bow! Feelings of loneliness, insecurity, juxtaposed against hopefulness and some nice guitar work and harmonies. Probably a little self autobiographical on the part of Rivers Cuomo - where he lets us into some of his private thoughts that he would never say out loud in public (yet here he did;) and feeling a bit ostracized by society. Timeless theme for the young. Relatable in some of its ugliness. Many credit / disparage him with starting the ‘emo’ rock trend. He definitely took it a step or three further with their next album Pinkerton (and his obsessions) where he was at a very low point and in alot of physical (and emotional apparently) pain (and maybe many self meds) after leg extension surgery and the subsequent feelings of emptiness after achieving such great success after this debut ‘blue’ album. Pinkerton was originally lambasted by fans and critics alike; and prompted Rivers to release more superficial inoffensive albums afterwards - but Pinkerton has achieved much accolades by both fans and media in subsequent decades!

I find Weezer is a band that one either “gets” or doesn’t. But a lot of the things critiqued are by design, these guys were are fully in cohesion with their creative vision. Many of the negative critiques of Weezer’s sound are by listeners who think they made a mistake or, were going for a sound or a mood they hadn’t already planned-This is not the case. Off topic, but I find it amazing how many non-rock music fans, or people who in the 90s wouldn’t have been the marketers’ target audience, like Weezer today. It’s kinda beautiful.

Got this as an 8th grader in 1998. It was the coolest thing I’d ever heard then and it’s still my favorite album.

Only in Dreams is what ties everything together on this album for me. I like every song but the melancholy buildup outro will always be my achilles heal. This song sounds like a band you may want to check out called Built to Spill.

Based on the aspects you liked of the album, I definitely think you would like Pinkerton more you should check it out

I picked this up at Record Exchange in the early 90s on a whim because I was with a group of friends and one of them had Weezer as a nickname. Shortly after they blew up on the radio. It was wild. I LOVE that album & wore it out as much as my copy of Little Earthquakes. It's definitely an album that reveals more layers with more listens.

I can still remember going for ice cream with my family in June of 1994 in my small Canadian town when I was 10, and "Undone The Sweater Song" came on our local AM rock station. Me and my older brother were in awe; never heard anything like it before. They just went into the song and never said who it was. Then at the end, the DJ goes "and that was the Weezy Boys... they're getting pretty big out west". So for the next year, I'd go to the local record stores searching for this group called the Weezy Boys. Eventually seeing a band called "Weezer" everywhere on the shelves made the light bulb go off. lol. Great reaction channel. Cheers.

Rivers was and is still not fully comfortable with rock stardom. When this came out it was grunge or punk rock or stadium rock and this was just some dudes saying “we’re awkward guys, we like to shred, surf and play dungeons and dragons and here’s an album about it.” Hard to full understand why old white dudes like me vibed with it without social and musical context of the early 90s. Thanks for giving it a listen.

Weezer isn't satire necessarily, but not to be taken fully seriously. It plays around with various perspectives and pokes fun without going full on absurd

What an underwhelming reaction. Of course you only like the poppy songs. Pretty snobby guy it seems. Barely a reaction to Only In Dreams, which just has one of the sickest and crushing crescendos in rock music. Like not even exaggerating. People are so apprehensive to praise this album because of some stupid memes surrounding Weezer that have just given them a bad image even though people who think they suck most definitely never listened to this album or even Pinkerton
