Are you thinking about starting weight loss medication? Or maybe you’re looking to switch things up? Are you curious about medications like Wegovy (Ozempic), Zepbound (Mounjaro), Saxenda (Victoza), Contrave (Naltrexone/Bupropion) and Xenical (Orlistat)? In this video, we'll take a look into the world of weight loss medications, what to expect, and how they can aid in your weight loss journey.
Like anything else, we need to understand the basics. Weight loss is about creating a calorie deficit-burning more calories than you consume. All diets aim to achieve this, and medications are just tools to make it easier. They are not a quick fix!
I’m going through all the various GLP-1 options available globally, including GLP-1 based meds like Wegovy (Ozempic), Zepbound, and Saxenda, as well as Contrave and Xenical. Each works differently to support weight management efforts. I’ll also compare the average weight loss percentages associated with each medication. For example, Zepbound boasts an average loss of 21% from baseline weight, while others like Contrave offer around 8-10%.
I’ll help you understand the mechanisms behind GLP-1 based medications, like Contrave's combination approach, and Xenical's fat-blocking properties. I’ll discuss their effects on appetite, satiety, and food-seeking behaviors. And no medication is without side effects. I’ll cover common as well as rare side effects associated with each medication, helping you make an informed decision.
Whether you're considering medication or exploring other weight loss strategies, remember, your journey to better health is about progress, not perfection. Every small step counts, so stay committed and focused on your goals.
Thanks for watching and always remember: small tweaks lead to massive peaks!

I was on ozempic for 2 years and lost 50 pounds . I have a fatty liver, insulin resistant, and pre diabetic. Ozempic stoled 2 years of my life i was so sick i had nausea i lived on Zofran, i had horrible constipation and immediately followed up by diarrhea for 3 days. Finally I told my doctor i cannot take ozempic anymore I'm sick everyday, im not working anymore, missed birthdays, Thanksgiving, ballgames for the grandkids etc. She put me on mounjarno i haven't been sick at all but i have diarrhea and i have insomnia. I'm on .05 so hoping these side effects go away. But ozempic and mounjarno are different i can testify to that.

Sounds awful. I've only been on Monjouro. Ive had really bad side effects when transitioning from one dose to the next, and I"ve had mild side effects otherwise. I went to fast at first from 5 to 7.5 and got very sick for two weeks, then went back down to 5.0 for three months. I got sick again when I went from 7.5 to 10.0 for two weeks (on weeks 3 and 4). But after that Ive had almost no side effects for almost 10 months now, Im on the top dose 15.0 now. I've been on it for almost 5 weeks now. Go as slow as possible. Getting through those sick weeks were awful (vomiting, horrible acid reflux/heartburn, stomach pain, terrible diarrhea). Good luck.

Why would you take something that long when it made you that sick? Why suffer?

I have just started 2.5 mounjaro, it’s my first week , so far have no side effects , hunger suppression not really happening yet but i have big hope😂 i have been on ozempic for almost 7 months , lost 24 pounds, was eager to start mounjaro since the worldwide shortage. Finally it’s happening🎉 why i have switched coz ozempic did not work as expected, had to follow a diet like the old days no benefit from appetite suppression and food noise… im dealing with bariatric regain , gastric sleeve over 7 years ago, regain of 50 pounds…

Pretty great introductory vid. This is the one to show to everyone and anyone who’s interested in going on a WL med, but who knows little about them. 🤔 A little surprised there was no mention of Qsymia though. And also maybe even phentermine and metformin… though admittedly those last two are on the lower end of the effectiveness scale (for weight-loss).
@theofficialdrdan
@theofficialdrdan 2 месяца назад
Qysmia isn't as readily available worldwide. Still a good option but more for the US of A folks. Metformin it can definitely be an option. I just don't need a bunch of Drs coming filling up my comments section because their patients are coming to them asking for it lol

Heh. Could be a problem, yes. 😏 Btw, any thoughts on metformin for longevity? There seems to be a little bit of buzz about that lately. 🤔

What do you think about weygovy for lipedema?
@theofficialdrdan
@theofficialdrdan 18 дней назад
Lip edema is a separate beast in itself. We don't have any data at present, but it could, in theory help with preventing weight gain, inflammation and weightloss in fat that isn't lipedema

I don't like the idea of practitioners telling people that they most likely have to be on this for life. Why not tell them, you'll be on it for life if you don't get on a good maintenance plan that you can stick to. Maintaining your weight is not the same as losing it. You don't have to starve, you have to eat healthy, implement portion control, keep away from processed foods, snacks, high sugar foods (unless on holidays or treats), and exercise. Those things are not impossible, work with a dietician if need be, or download free maintenance plans. You are supposed to be doing these things while on GLP1s. If you are extremely obese and completely lack the ability to do these things, like you just can't stop eating unless you are on this medication then you may be on it for life. I don't believe that will be me. Being at a calorie deficit for years to lose weight is hard, but when I go off it I will have a plan where I'm not starving that I will stick too. Also adding intermittent fasting to a maintenance plan is helpful(even if its only 12-14 hours, that means start eating at 9am and stop at 9pm). In the worse case scenario, there are natural supplements you can take to help.
@theofficialdrdan

My friend, is that the answer? Just a good maintenance plan? Damn I can't believe we haven't thought about that!

@@theofficialdrdan In your video I heard you say " yes studies show you'll be on it for life, if you stop taking it you'll gain the weight back, a small percentage didn't gain the weight and so while it's not impossible it's really freaking hard". I haven't heard you speak about people coming off the medication and going on an excellent plan to keep the weight off without medication, or that studies showed people keeping good habits all around just gain the weight back regardless without the meds.

@theofficialdrdan It's surprising to see people losing 10 pds a month on these. I lost 1 and 1/2 pds for 15 months kept 30 percent off for 10ys. But major weight gain last yr. Unfortunately I can't get on track and Dr prescribed Zepbound. I'm kinda sad about it I lost my power and food is now a friend again. Oddly food was actually more pleasurable eating 1500 calories a day.

When people lose 10 pds in one month on the glp1s is it mainly water or what?
@theofficialdrdan
@theofficialdrdan 2 месяца назад
Likely. Often people will make diet changes and usually includes reducing processed foods/carbs and that leads to water loss.

@brianne571
@brianne571 2 месяца назад
Gallstones are fine as long as they don't bother you. Trust me you'll know. I'm just about an expert in thus. Like fibroid leave them alone if they dont bother you
@theofficialdrdan
@theofficialdrdan 2 месяца назад
Rarely. We can use certain medications. It all depends on the severity.
@katniss4670
@katniss4670 2 месяца назад
@@theofficialdrdan If so , then gallstones are a fairly serious side effect. What percentage of people on GLP-1s develop them ?
@cloakster
@cloakster 2 месяца назад
@@katniss4670 IIRC, gallstones are more a product of rapid weight-loss, and are not directly caused by the GLP-1 medication itself. And even then, they’re still fairly rare.

Very true, Dr Dan. But as you know, high-dose Rybelsus (25 and 50mg) will be approved for obesity soon, maybe already has. And should then show up in (US, anyway) pharmacies sometime later this year. (Though I do wonder what the side effects will be like on that 50mg dose(!)).
