I'll never forget hearing a request for this song on the radio. It was an older woman who called in and said "Can you play that song by the poor man whose girlfriend did awful things to him?" The DJ said "Do you mean "You don't Love me Anymore"." She said "Yes, that poor man. I feel so bad for him." She had the sweetest voice and seemed to truly feel so sorry for Weird Al.
I took my ( at that time ) very young son to see Weird Al in concert at a local college. He was a huge fan and I was...skeptical. Much to my surprise it ended up being one of the funnest gigs I've ever been to. The band were all actually very good musicians and there were lots of props, costume changes, fake black and white science films, tastless commercials, and in the middle of it all...Weird Al...putting on a stellar performance. If you've never seen him live you owe it to yourself to go at least once. The world needs Weird Al.
Yeah, I managed to see him live just once, and it was more than worth it. I'm not really a fan of concerts, but I would definitely see him live again if I had the chance. It was awesome.
jerry murphy Yeah, his band is some of the best live music I've ever seen which took me aback at first. I guess that's what happens when they're playing every genre of music together for 30 years. :)
I've seen him five times in concert, with the fifth time I got to meet him (he signed my Cheese Sandwich). Each concert I went to was highly enjoyable and in person he was really polite about signing my Cheese Sandwich.
I think i prefer his character as the creepy stalker in Melanie than the victim in this one. Here it's funny but I feel bad for him at the same time. Where I can just laugh at him in Melanie. Lol
Rock Roll Hall of Fame, this is just another example of the versatility this man professors. He can sing you a love song with aggression and make you fall in love with you. He singing a love song. I'll bet that almost every singer in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has a romantic love song? Al has that sexy voice, us woman like. Al is so talented in so many ways.
2:00-2:20 best soulful video snippet ever, especially the blowtorch. *XD* "You know I even think it's kinda cute the way / You poison my coffee just a little each day I still remember the way that you laughed / When you pushed me down the elevator shaft"
I very much want to see someone do their blind audition on the TV show "The Voice" with this song. For the judges unfamiliar with the song, I can't wait to see their faces once the singer gets to the second verse! 😀
When I was young and couldn't understand English yet, my father owned a Weird Al album would always play it in the car. Whenever this song played, I thought it had a deep and sentimental meaning, thus it being my favourite song of the album. Now that I'm playing for the first time in five years, it's still my favourite Weird Al song.
LYRICS : We've been together for so very long But now things are changing, oh I wonder what's wrong? Seems you don't want me around The passion is gone and the flame's died down I guess I lost a little bit of self-esteem That time that you made it with the whole hockey team You used to think I was nice Now you tell all your friends that I'm the Antichrist Oh, why did you disconnect the brakes in my car? That kind of thing is hard to ignore Got a funny feeling you don't love me anymore I knew that we were having problems when You put those piranhas in my bathtub again You're still the light of my life Oh darling, I'm beggin', won't you put down that knife? You know, I even think it's kinda cute the way You poison my coffee just a little each day I still remember the way that you laughed When you pushed me down that elevator shaft Oh, if you don't mind me asking, what's this poisonous cobra Doing in my underwear drawer? Sometime I get to thinking you don't love me any more You slammed my face down on the barbecue grill Now my scars are all healing, but my heart never will You set my house on fire You pulled out my chest hairs with an old pair of pliers Oh, you think I'm ugly and you say that I'm cheap You shaved off my eyebrows while I was asleep You drilled a hole in my head Then you dumped me in a drainage ditch and left me for dead Oh, you know this really isn't like you at all You never acted this way before Honey, something tells me you don't love me any more, oh no no Got a funny feeling you don't love me anymore
If he remade this song now: 1. If you don't mind me asking why you made me watch Cats That kind of thing is hard to ignore Got a funny feeling you don't love me anymore 2. Could you please tell me why you bought nothing but kale When you went to the grocery store Got a funny feeling you don't love me anymore
Can we take a minute to appreciate the actor and singer Robert Goulet on piano? Hes most known for serious acting in like the 70's, not goofy music videos. Kudos for the sillyness
@@dannylgriffin He also, prior to that, had a - very brief - cameo in the "Police Squad" episode "A Bird In The Hand (The Butler Did It)". In a masterful piece of acting that was shamefully overlooked by that year's Academy Awards, he ran the full gamut of emotions as the victim of a firing squad in the opening credits 😂 Police Squad, of course, was the progenitor of the Naked Gun films, but I'm sure you don't need me to tell you that!
That's awesome. I loved his cameo on the Simpsons. Bart was running a casino in his treehouse and hired Goulet to sing "Jingle Bells, Batman Smells". He accidentally whacked Milhouse in the head with his twirling microphone.
Let's take a moment to appreciate the sheer number of completely off-the-wall jokes that are crammed into 4½ minutes. I don't even think the Zucker brothers laid them on this thick.
This and many other Weird Al love songs needs to be on a Valentines day and Sweetest Day collection. Such love and devotion needs to be celebrated with this song everyday.....
I've loved this song and this video for years, but just now learned that the video is a parody of the video for "More Than Words" by Extreme, and I have a whole new appreciation for it.
I really loved the song, especially the harmony. The range is a low tenor, which is my range, so I would wear headphones and play it very loud and record myself singing, then listen to my _a capella_ performance. I discovered I am very tone deaf.
After plunking on a piano for a while, I was told once by a co-worker that I had a lot of musical talent. I demurred. He said, "you must have, you haven't used any of it."
When I first heard this song, I was wondering if he was seriously making a sad song. For the first couple lines, it's pretty straightforward, but I was relieved and smiling again when he kept bringing up all the ridiculous things his girl has done to him. RUN FOR YOUR LIFE, AL!
I love listening to _'MELANIE'_ so much that I tend to forget how truly heartbreaking this song is... I didn't realize while going through it, how thoroughly Psycho my girlfriend's had been. This song absolutely puts all that in perspective though.
I first heard this song when I was a teen. I got emotional hearing it and was welling up in tears. I was thinking "why would a girl do such a cruel thing to a man, who still loves her, and is willing to put up with her!? Knowing who Weird AL Yankovic was... the music he did... and the fact that there may have been some humor involved... I looked past all that and was listening to the story along with the melody... and even today I still feel the same way when I hear it. This song is so sad and yet so damn funny... and is one of my all time favorites.
This was the first song I heard in a concert in 7th grade and I am an old 43 woman. And he just got better every song. No one can ever replace his tremendous talent
Me too! So many perfect twists in just that one line. 1) he realized they were having problems when she put piranha in his bathtub? some real understatement going on there! 2)He’s not revealing this attempted murder to a third party- he is addressing his would-be murderer, so this would not be “news” to her. 3)delete the “again” and what remains is truly horrifying. Add it, and though still horrifying, it becomes hysterically funny because-wait, this isn’t the first time she tried to kill him with piranha???
@justgearheadstuff2718 Empty bottles of Visine in the trash wasn't enough of a clue. I thought I was having a reaction to medication. XD Old bartender's trick. My God she was evil.
Remember: The best revenge is to move on, be happy and successful. If you can have a hit song relating your pain and calling them out ...Absolutely Awesome!
Al without a mustache: Looks like that one guy who's still friends with his elementary school teachers. Al with a mustache and glasses: Napolean Dynamite.
Apparently, Weird Al did this music video in one take. That's why he very aggressively smashed the guitar since he knew this one wouldn't break easy. He was dedicated to complete the take so he gave it his all.
He didn't do the video in one whole take. The guitar was a replica of the one used in the "More Than Words" video and cost $1,000, so he had only one chance to smash it because a cheaper guitar wouldn't match the original video.
+Jaye C. This was my wife and I's wedding song. Some people thought it was weird. Been with her for 13 years this January....it's a weird relationship.
Brilliant! the mix of confusion and sadness always brings me to tears. The way that he makes it so that you wonder if she doesn't love him anymore, if these are all accidents, or if she's being hired by reptilians that are part of a Rebel space fleet trying to destroy the world thereby putting mosquitos into extinction. The way he presents the lyrics in a way where you as well feel his sadness and wonder about alien life and reptilians. I can hear through the whole song the hatred of the space government and the want to alliance with the alien rebels who are trying to kidnap all the cows in the universe. 20/10 would listen to till my ears drop off or the space government kills me
honestly the fact that this only has 3 million views is so sad. this has always been my favorite song by him, and forever will be. i literally listened to this on repeat when i was like 7.
The guitar smashing always worked for me a lot better than if it had been a cheap guitar that broke in a hit or two, because it makes the whole song feel really passive-aggressive, rather than passive. It reads as a frustration with his ex, rather than... well, I'm not sure how a cheap guitar breaking easily would've read. And that's why you buy Ovation.
I think the guitar Jim played when I saw Strings Attached was an Ovation. Luckily Weird Al didn't smash that. Their costs are in the $450-$900 range. That's a lot of moneys!
Classic Al. You've got the janitor from "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Smells Like Nirvana," Robert Goulet being very funny; and are the two guys with the lighter and torch Larry and "My Other Brother Darryl" from "Newhart"?
I believe it’s called a pastiche, a song written in the same style as another song. So it’s an original song, but written to sound similar to More Than Words.
I love this because my Mom loved this. She likes sweet love songs, and seeing the stereotypical ballad upended in this way had us cracking up. I know Weird Al has retired, but please PLEASE just one more album, dude... You could save the world!
This like any great weird al song begins quite normal. He sucks the listener into thinking this just a regular break up love song but doesn't take long to go off the rails in Al's typical style. Saddest Al song I've heard but also pretty funny at the same time. What a roller-coaster of emotion.
Seen him play this live at the strings attached tour in New orleans on June 13th 2019. He smashed the guitar and everything at the end...funny shit man
Haha nice I was at the Strings Attached concert in San Diego back in 19', and he did the same. Was an awesome show. He even put the guitar down twice instead of once.
Weird Al, this is supposed to be an absurd song, but it actually sounds sweet, in a morbid kind of way. It's easy to dance to and the lyrics are catchy. A true masterpiece... Loved it, thanks for the video.
He touches my heart like so many singers have. I want to sing along because I know all the words and remember them. My body feels the rhythm with my heart, listening to the sway of sultry music. I'm telling you he has an unspoken talent. He can rock you and romance you at the same time. I'm not naming names but there are a lot of singers in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame that have romanced thousands of women just like Al. He can play this music and turn it round an make a country and western song and be good at it. I think he better talented then most Rock Stars even here in 2023. This song is still better then most popular music today. I'm an old rocker and I love Al music.
Or your difficult, twisted relationship with Lapis, right Perry? "You rejected and crushed all the gifts I tried to leave at your door, Got a funny feeling you don't love me anymore"
The guy sitting next to Al is Jim West. He's been Al's guitarist since his 1982 debut album. The guy holding up the lighter is Steve Jay, Al's bassist since 82, and I THINK the guy sitting opposite of Steve is Al's drummer, Jon “Bermuda” Schwartz.
My first hearing of this song was on mtv when Al was promoting Off the Deep End and he performed it in the studio live during a top 20 type of show and he still did the guitar smash! I’d love to see that version again!
This was the very first Weird Al song I ever heard as a little kid. I've been a fan ever since. He played this live at Graceland last night. Not gonna lie... I got misty eyed.
Oddly enough, same for me. Got the cassette and had it on repeat as a kid. One day, my friend in elementary school heard me listening to "Smells Like Nirvana"....and handed me his cassette of "Nevermind" and said "here's the real version of that song"- that moment laid the foundation of all the music I've gotten into and sought out for the next 31 years (as of this reply)... eventually picking up the cello in middle school (influenced by Nirvana's "Unplugged"), then bass guitar, and even some 6-string action.
Could never get away with that today. I think about half the things we did in school when we were kids would never happen today, some for the better, but most for the worst.
i actually memorised the lyrics of this song then i sang it to my Very First and Last Girlfriend that i had... She was laughing so hard then when i reach the mid-part, she burst to tears, then at the end of the song, she hugged me like never before. Now, she by my side again :'D. Thank You Al, for this wonderful song...
I am thinking about singing this song for my best friend wedding. He loves crazy things like this. I'm not really a singer or like to be in front of a crowd. I wish I had some help singing it. I think it would be great fun.
Randomly decided to listen to this today for the first time since I was like 7. Damn that hockey team line went way over my head back then, but damn haha.
Imagine deadpool singing this about black widow. Scarlet Johansen dressed as black widow casually setting traps in the background as Ryan Reynolds in the deadpool suit is playing slowly on a guitar.
Interesting fact: though the song itself is a "Weird Al" Yankovic original (it's not a parody of another song), the VIDEO *is* a parody of the video for "More Than Words" by Extreme.
IIRC, Al really really wanted to release this song as a single and video, but the record company was iffy about committing to an Al original. They compromised and Al agreed that if he wouldn't release another parody as a single, he'd at least make the video a parody.
It just hit me. The song "More Than Words" that this is parodying is about him telling his lover to SHOW him how they feel, don't just say it. Here, she really is showing him how she feels. By repeatedly trying to kill him.
At the 4:11 mark, I like when he angrily takes the guitar out of the other feller's hands, and just smashes it into a million pieces as if he had finished performing a heavy metal tune and just walks away as if nothing happened at all. He must've been that angry to have gone through such a gruesome relationship... Weird Al, you, sir, never disappoint!!! You are... AWWWWWWWWWESOME!!!!
I love how the band member in the beginning of the video had a little piglet in his lap, then later in the video he’s eating ham. Brilliant. Weird Al is a God.
