Good to see you. It always makes me feel good to see another disabledcrafter who is trucking along without apology for how long its been, or how "little" has been accomplished because they have been ill. Yup been in the hospital more than half the month, would rather not dwell on how little knitting I got done because of that-- would rather say, look at what I DID knit while in the hospital for half the month. We do what we can do everyday. Whether thats standing sitting or laying we are still important and productive parts of our societies, we are still humans. That was a very long winded way of saying thank you for making me feel represented as a human and crafter.

Yay! for daisies being done and a hat you might like to wear! I do like the yarn and pattern combo of the new hat. I find smaller project that support my enthusiasm are required at times, so I am glad you took some time for yours. I also appreciate the wording of "I'm not JUST a mad woman with a wooden spoon". Perhaps a mad woman with a wooden spoon and a purpose...🙂 We are all a little mad. It's ok. 🙃Take care!

Victory over the daisies and the weirdness of hats! The baby bear one is so cute so I hope it can find its way to a baby who both appreciates it and can actually wear it. Funnily enough, I'm currently knitting with wool that's also from Moonlight Fibre. They have some really beautiful colourways and the harvest one is especially good.

If you want another shop of beautiful hand-dyed yarn to wonder over/from which to make impulsive and ill-advised purchases that you can't quite bring yourself to regret/add to too many wish lists, Floof Fibre (also on Etsy) also have stunning colourways, and somehow manage to be even softer too. I made a cardigan from their wool and it quickly became my most worn piece.

I agree with you about the cotton yarn, I like wearing cotton, but because it has no stretch I can only knit with it for short amounts of time, or my hands begin to feel sore. looove that baby hat!! I have learned the hard way making baby knits way undersized. it may not be your gauge being off at all!! average baby sizes are just averages, babies come in so many different sizes. my son never once fit his newborn sized knits. he is now 19 months and outgrowing 3T clothes. I just have to make things a few sizes up from what he’s currently wearing when I cast on so that by the time I finish it he can wear it a couple months!

If the cold is really bugging you, pamper yourself with all rhings warm and cosy! Electric blanket, flannelette sheets, bed socks, flannelette nightgown, bed jacket, rug up and go for walks in the sun whenever there is some, hot cups of tea, coffee or cocoa - wear lots of warm clothes indoors and out. Make yourself comfortable! It is the only way to truly enjoy winter.

You are handicapped like me. 😄 I just got a new electric wheelchair this year and I plan on taking my crocheting to the park when the weather cools. I am going to find inspiration in nature for new projects too. Leafs and flowers are easy to make. I even know how to crochet and knit 3d objects. I recently crochet a realistic rose with a stem and I perfumed it to smell like a rose with rose water I made. Right now I am working on a skirt, a basic crochet pattern with pink white with bits of red throughout the layers and a belt. I already made the belt and a unique pattern design. It's going to take me awhile to finish it. I can't wait, it's going to be a floor length skirt that I can wear in the spring or winter when I go for a drive in my electric wheelchair. I also bought buttons just in case I want to add them to the design. I might make a shirt for it or a travel cardigan. I have an old pattern for a unique cardigan I named the travel cardigan because it's able to fold up into different styles and it can go with almost anything I wear. It even has a crochet ribbon to use as a belt or a wrapping for travel. I like to combine crochet and knitting so I might knit something to add to the skirt later. 😊 Thank you for sharing your skills. I appreciate you. ❤

Like you, I don't like the feel of cotton yarn. But I while I was in the UK in October I bought some and knit a couple of string bags for carrying my market purchases. Before I left I gifted one of the bags to the friend I had been visiting and another to a woman in Wales who rescued me when none of the taxis would make time to drive me from the train station to my hotel. I used a string bag pattern from Ravelry that I memorized a few years ago.

Roxanne Richardson has a trick for casting on ribbing in the round, which is that you just go back-and-forth for the first couple, and don’t try to attach them until you have two or three rows in, and then you’re way less likely to twist it. It was game changer for me.

Been personally spending the last 2 months working on a dress-so close to done, and it will be almost 500g of wool and 250g of mohair! Dreadfully dull in stockinette, especially since I took a bunch of colors of the same base and dyed it all black, but I bet I’ll wear it like every day 😂❤ I am also not a beanie fan, and I like my Winter Sun hat because it’s a box shape instead. Hooray for daisies! Watching you make one, I realised they're actually very similar to (giant) Dorset buttons! If you do need to make buttons for the cardi, you might enjoy looking into them, there are several good tutorials knocking around. Bonus: they'll be a perfect match because you can make them from the same yarn 👍 That hat suits you beautifully! The colour is lovely, very rich and warm 👍 I'm having a personal hat style crisis - I've gone from a very cropped pixie cut (about an inch long all over!) 4 years ago to hair almost down to my elbows. It turns out hair takes up a lot of room in a hat! I'm consulting the marvellous Woolly Wormhead's incredible catalogue of styles for inspiration and pondering.

Out of interest, have you got yourself one of those electric over blankets you can use wherever you are in the house? I got one last winter and even without putting it on, it’s AMAZING. Both my friends who also struggle with the cold got them too and love them. Also in love with my Oodie and knock off oodie, plus teddy fleece sweaters. And there’s nothing better than wool, handknit socks in slippers with sheepskin insoles added for creating the perfect level of warmth and microclimate without getting sweaty! I have a book I bought second hand that I need to get rid of and wondered if you might like it - it’s about historical sock construction and patterns by Nancy someone (it’s not to hand) - and I recently had my first wheelchair delivered by my health board, so I’m excited about getting out of the house again!

10:29 "Americans, just do what the rest of the world does when we're dealing with you, google it" got me laughing soo hard I choked on my coffee 😂 I remember a meme I saw on pinterest, that was like "the rest of the world: lets measure in finely calculated systems, like the kilometer, thousand times smaller the meter, ten times smaller the decimeter, and ten times smaller again the millimeter. And lets square things up when we need to measure areas, and add the 100x100 square called a hektar, from the greek term for hundred. Americans: y'a know, just call that a yard and a foot, everybody will have one to know what we mean, the smaller thing can be a fingertip-thing called inch. What, a longer distance? Can we just take that thing we used to get here, mile or something? Yeah that will be the same distance for suuure *got the math wrong to the mile is crooked af*" And congrats on your progress!
@RetroClaude
@RetroClaude 6 месяцев назад
😂 whenever I talk about metric things I always get comments from confused Americans so I always try and include a rough conversion but with Farenheit I have literally no idea. 40°F is that good? Am I going to die? 96°F Will I need a coat? It could be anything to me! 😂

Yes, cotton is miserable to work with. I won't do it any more. It makes my hands hurt too much. As an avid crocheter, I agree that basic crochet background fabric is ugly. I always look for a pattern with some other background stitch. Or I substitute a seed stitch. It looks and feels much nicer. Your hats turned out lovely. Brilliant idea for drying the hat in the oven! Where I live, we have a similar climate to the south of England. It takes forever to dry things in autumn/ winter. 😊

@@RetroClaude, I made mine with a soft acrylic yarn, so I think it stretched a little more than cotton yarn, but I always crochet a bit tight, so I had to go up a hook size or two. In terms of doing two at a time socks, I’ve started doing toe-u, because I just keep going up the ribbed ankle until I’ve run out of yarn. I hate leftovers. And I don’t really have to worry about casting on the ribbing, because I use Judy‘s magic cast on for the toe and just increase to the number of stitches I need. And I just keep going to run out of yarn. So if that’s a concern, I honestly recommend doing two at a time toe-up.
@RetroClaude
@RetroClaude 7 месяцев назад
I have done toe up socks but I find I can't get them to fit as well on me. They always end up too long and narrow! I'll have to keep refining my technique because I do love the ease of that cast on technique!

@@RetroClaude I’m trying to develop a pattern-less pattern, after Roxanne Richardson’s hat and fingerless mitts, for socks. Ideally, it will let you input certain foot measurements, along with your individual row and stitch gauge, and it will populate the sock pattern (with stitch and row counts) for you. It’s a work in progress. If it looks to work, I’ll send it to you! I really appreciate you and your channel, and especially the stash-busting series, to the point that I almost watch it monthly, and your good-better-best system, as I’ve re-started my own crafting journey and am taking on new and more ambitious patterns that I didn’t think I could do. I also live with several chronic conditions that impact my ability to do even simple things sometimes. It helps me to see you do what you can when you can, acknowledging the impact of your health on the things you want to do, the frustration when patterns and yarn are contrary, your sass and sarcasm, and your joy when projects are done or turned out well. I love everything about your content, because it’s real. You asked for feedback, and the only thing I would say is do what makes you happy, even if that’s adding simple or challenging projects, but just let us see of the journey. Thank you Claude.

I have the same problem with cotton yarn. It just feels scratchy to me or something. They have come out with some newer yarn in the last few years. Before that every time I tried to use cotton yarn I couldn't get my crochet hooked through it because it would separate. So now it's not quite such a pain to work with but it is still not my favorite.

Yes I found the cotton very splitty and I got so many split stitches. Someone else recommended a cotton/bamboo blend that I'll try if I use cotton again ☺️

Ahh, thanks for the daisy making tutorial. Now I see why you weren't keen on just smashing them out. I find my brain doesn't enjoy tasks that have bits of one skill and then bits of another, and you can't task batch and do all the winding first and then the sewing up. Or maybe one could clip a peg on the centre of the daisies and try winding a bunch. Also I nearly laughed when you said just do what the rest of us do and look up C to F! 👌 Did you have all those ends to weave I on the victory beret? 😯 I'm so thankful I learned about knitting the ends in as you go just after I started my Lavender Rainbow Jumper.

Yes it was a case of nothing for it but one at a time. I get the feeling it might have been the sort of task given to a young teen while mum crocheted them up back in the day. And yes I sewed in all those ends 😂 there would have been more. Those were only the ones where I couldn't do a splice!

I'm in two minds about oven drying. One on side, 50° probably isn't hot enough to activate any odours... on the other hand, I'm not sure I'd take the chance!
@RetroClaude
@RetroClaude 6 месяцев назад
I double checked and 50° was recommended as a way to kill moths so I figured it wouldn't be too harsh on the yarn. I also found that while you got quite a woolly smell while it was baking, the finished garment smelt less woolly, probably because it hadn't been sat damp for 3 weeks 😅

I thought I was making progress in stashbusting, but noooo. A family was clearing out Mum's old shed and offered everything for free. What did I come away with? Yep. It's all absolutely lovely, and I know I'll find a use for it, but my stash just got considerably larger... Sigh.

Kind of random question: is the ball of yarn being 50g thing something that you did because it's a common quantity of yarn to sell in Europe, or because it's more accurate for the stashbusting count? My American brain is very used to a ball or skein of yarn being sold as 100g, and I can't tell if it's just me or just that I'm American….. Ultimately I suppose it doesn't matter and I'm just curious lol. I love your videos Claude and I'm always happy to see you on my screen!
@RetroClaude
@RetroClaude 7 месяцев назад
Yes 50g is very common in Europe and even 25g (about an ounce). This is usually for commercial yarns that are prewound in balls. Skeins are sold by 100g. I went with 50g because when I started counting up most of the full balls of wool in my stash were 50g so I counted them first before dealing with the skeins, vintage yarns in imperial and half used bits. My suggestion for why such a small quantity is because vintage yarns were sold (generally) in ounce balls (28g) to avoid lots of waste and the habit stuck.

10:30 for other americans the oven is at 122 F. I know that 25 C is a little cold for room temp so double that would be hot but not enough to bake wool yarn lol. I do try my best to understand celsius since I am in college for a STEM degree, but at least I know the important landmarks in celsius!

@RetroClaude once the fractions go past a 1/4 in the imperial system I get super lost too. At that point, just use metric, so it's more of a whole number.

@RetroClaude
@RetroClaude 7 месяцев назад
That is a tricky one. You could try steam blocking it instead. Lay it out flat on several towels and hold a steam iron just over it, but not touching it, and pump the steam button moving around until the blanket starts to feel warm and damp. It should dry much quicker than if it's had a soak meaning you shouldn't have to leave it out flat for more than a few hours ☺️ I hope that helps 💚

When I saw the title about gross yarn, I got so afraid that your painstakingly procured daisy yarn had something wrong with it! I’m glad it wasn’t that. And 50C in Fahrenheit is… not something I feel like actually looking up, but I do have enough ~metric vibes~ to tell anyone who’s wondering that it’s very low for an oven. Probably around the mid one hundreds?
@RetroClaude
@RetroClaude 7 месяцев назад
Many folks have commented to tell me it's 122°F but their oven doesn't go that low. My logic for that number was it'll be like a desert 🏜️ 😂 some one also recommended an air fryer for drying, if you don't live in the desert 😅

@@RetroClaude Have you ever tried those calcium chloride moisture absorbers? I lived two years in South Korea (which is how I got some metric vibes), where they have a summer monsoon season and clothes dryers are basically unheard of. With the help of the moisture absorbers I was surprised by how well everyone’s clothes dried - if the sun was out and it wasn’t actually raining, the sun and summer heat got things dry by sunset, but even in the middle of a rainstorm, everything would dry within a couple days as long as it didn’t get directly rained on. Brainstorming here because I think the oven’s a very creative idea, but I also think not everything will fit in the oven.
