One inconsistency I've not seen brought up much is Mrs. Puff's school. The interior, in most episodes is just shown to be a single room, but there are a few times it's a whole school with multiple classrooms and even stairs. A good example of this is the episode when Patrick joins SpongeBob to class, the episode makes the school seem huge inside.
I feel like he just guesses what gary's saying based on his tone? lol but yeah it's a bit weird. I mean they made a whole ep abt gary getting a translator device so spongebob can understand him, I think the norm is that he doesn't / w'ever makes the joke work better
During that one episode where Plankton pretended to be Gary SpongeBob was surprised that Gary was talking. Even though he's spoken to Gary hundreds of times.

I think the elevator is just him being boujee. We have three stories in our house and it takes about 30 seconds getting from the bottom to the top taking the stairs
His decor isn't "models of fish" they're mostly fishing lures that we can assume sank to the sea floor. The real inconsistency, is that the big one on his wall is a top-water popper. These lures are buoyant, making it extremely unlikely and inconvenient for SpongeBob to acquire it.

patrick's home kinda makes sense to me. you could argue that since its all made of sand he can redecorate it however he wants to suit his needs at any given moment. as for the electricity working, i think thats just general cartoon logic which spongebob employs a lot. it sorta makes sense that some random TV made out of sand somehow actually works in the silly anything goes world of spongebob. this isn't to say all plotholes can be explained with cartoon logic. like squidward's bedroom being on the first floor in plankton, isn't really cartoon logic since its not for a joke, or even that absurd, just a detail which isn't consistent with the rest of the show.
Fully agree, I didn't wanna just be the generic cartoon reviewer who goes after every small detail cause that's no fun, but then that leads to an important question: WHERE DOES PATRICK PUT ALL THE DUG UP SAND?

In Help Wanted, SpongeBob makes like a million patties in less than 30 seconds for the anchovies, but in Neptune’s Spatula it takes him like 5 minutes to make a single patty in the competition against Neptune. That always bothered me, but I realized that it’s because the two episodes are trying to give the viewers two different messages; one is about passion and dedication, and the other is about quality over quantity. My point is, sometimes contradictions in SpongeBob are intentional and are there for a reason.

Squidward's bedroom was on the first floor, until SpongeBob crashed through it and destroyed the walls, which made Squidward move it to the second floor, that way SpongeBob couldn't crash through it again. The Krusty Krab being to the left or right of Conch Street isn't an issue: there are simply two different ways of reaching it. Going to the right (from our vantage point) is a straight shot, while going left (again, from our vantage point) is a roundabout way of getting there.
I can (sort of) confirm this. As a kid I had a book about SpongeBob with lots of different stuff about the show in it. Trivia, stuff about episodes and the characters etc. There was also a map of Bikini Bottom, which shows that there are in fact two different ways to get to the Krusty Krab from SpongeBob's house, one going left and the other going right. I guess SpongeBob just prefers to take one route over the other sometimes.
My headcanon is that, since they’re underwater, occasionally there’s a strong tide or large animal and entire building can get swept up and moved around, and that’s why the Krusty Krab is sometimes in different places compared to SpongeBob’s house
I am 87% sure that we do get to see patricks grill again in that one episode where he gets a really rare card with mermaid man or something and the plot revolves around how sponegbob tries to prevent patrick from injuring the card (which patrick, keeps accidetally doing). At one point, patrick tries to clean his grill with the card iirc.
yeah we do I'm p sure the grill is also used in "patrick's staycation". but it is kinda funny to me how spongebob, squidward and patrick's houses all have these rarely seen/used aspects to them
I need to say that milkshakes at the Krusty Krab make perfect sense when you consider that McDonald’s, Burger King, Chick-fil-a, and Arby’s all have milkshakes; Wendy’s has their frosty which I’d say is somewhere between a milkshake and soft serve ice cream, and Dairy Queen has a whole menu including burgers and chicken strips and such.

Squidward’s room in ‘Plankton!’ was always funny to me. Not only is it on ground level when in every other appearance it’s on a higher floor, but both walls that SpongeBob breaks through lead outside. So I like to imagine that in that one specific episode Squidward’s front door leads to his bedroom which is also the only room in his entire house.
Some say Squidward chose to move his bedroom upstairs after the events of "Plankton!" I know SpongeBob's lack of continuity, but it's still a fun theory to me at least.
I love the physical inconsistencies of Bikini Bottom. Keeps it fresh every episode; you never know what you're going to expect, even when taking place in the same locations you've seen a hundred times. Plus, the unpredictable nature of the town fits the non-sensical theme of the show. What I'm not a fan of is when the characters are inconsistent, like when SpongeBob is braindead in one episode, or a maniac that tortures Squidward in the next. The characters should be the grounding feature of the show.
SpongeBob being a maniac who tortures Squidward was literally a thing in season one in the sweet home pineapple Patrick says is it already time to ruin Squidward day with him saying that to not start without him
Another inconsistency that bothers me is the layout of the kitchen at the Krusty Crab. In most episodes, Spongebob’s grill is right by Squidward’s little order window or whatever you call it. In other episodes, the grill and everything is on the other side of the kitchen.
@@gameuniverse5973 Seems a bit excessive to move a huge grill/stove all the way to the other side of the kitchen and then turn it around, just to clean the sides and then turn it around again and pull it all the way back to the order window behind Squidward imo, and it’s not really a small kitchen. "Your Shoe's Untied" makes fun of how far away the grill is from the ordering window. Speaking of loopholes, if SpongeBob wore any other shoes without shoelaces, then all of his bad luck with shoelaces in "Your Shoe's Untied" could have been completely avoided.

Apparently there was an episode about the Krusty Krab opening a drive-through, and in order for the premise to work they just edited out the windows. You can even see it in the establishing shot.
Yup the walls in both sides where wood instead of being glass like we always shown even tho I don't really see the point Mr Krabs could have just done a hole in the glass to act as a drive through still or they dint want to have to animated the outside in every shot

@@tiablue9106 Considering how many times the Krusty Krab gets destroyed, I wouldn't be surprised if Mr. Krabs chose to, at one point, just rebuild the sides of the walls with only wood to see if it would cause less destruction. But somehow still managed to cause destruction anyways.
There’s even a gag where two fish argue about whether Neptune or Poseidon are king of the sea in the episode where it’s really windy and the jelly fish are attracted to the whistle noises SpongeBob’s holes make in the wind.
Ugh that episode, but yeah technically Neptune and Poseidon are the same person (in original mythology anyway) Neptune is just his Roman name and Poseidon is his Greek name same with the likes of Jupiter and Zeus.
Commenting before watching, apparently they changed who squidward’s mom is, before it used to be an older looking squid but now in (of course) one of the newer episodes show his “actual” mom
Not gonna lie, I forgot about the big stuff (like Kamp Koral & SpongeBob, Patrick and Squidward's families). I heard about the new episode, and I think they also changed what his dad looked like (at least from one of the comics). In regards to King Neptune, official anniversary art establishes that the King from Neptune's Spatula and the King from the 1st movie are two different people. I presume the latter is merely royalty while the former is an actual god.

Even when I was a kid there were several that I noticed: 1. The Krusty Krab is open on Sundays in Squid's Day Off but then in Good Neighbors, Sunday is Squidward's only day off. 2. SB-129 and Ugh give us two different paleolithic versions of Spongebob and Patrick. 3. There's a kelp tree next to Patrick's house that only shows up in Club Spongebob and is never seen again. 4. There's a coral tree growing next to Squidward's house that only shows up in Christimas Who and is never seen again. 5. Christimas Who establishes that no one in Bikini Bottom konws what Christmas is, but in Secret Box Spongebob mentions a Christmas party as though it's a regular occurence. And perhaps the biggest one: 6. The Krabby Patty Formula is an old Krabs family recipe, something Mr. Krabs invented intentionally, or something created entirely by accident depedning on the episode.
First I think Squidward just uses his vacation which he mentioned in squeaky boots in sunday or they just change the schedule like probably reversing the 24 hours a day Second sb SpongeBob and Patrick are older eras while ugh is a younger era by how they have houses,can somewhat talk,and have actual clothes Kelp tree honestly who knows but I see it being cut down by Patrick to eat since kelp is shown being something they eat Coral tree was cut down so Squidward never bothered to plant another again since it probably took a long time to grow Secret box can happen before the Christmas episode there nothing saying the episodes are all in chronological order The formula honestly is probably made by accident the whole Krabby patty family recipe can be argued him lying hard since he did lie bold face on how the Krabby patty and plankton was with SpongeBob same with plankton so there unreliable narrators to that so even the Karen version of events might not be true
I think a good reason to have consistency in cartoons is twofold. One you get the reward of paying attention and seeing old unused rooms again and it being fun to see. Two if the location is part of a joke, then the joke isn't overshadowed by us overthinkers thinking about the inconsistency rather than the joke itself.
One thing you forgot was in the episode "Inspongeiac" Spongebob's house is seen being next door to Patrick's rock. With Squidwards house nowhere to be seen.
Squidward tied balloons to his house and moved it away from his annoying neighbors in a hilarious offscreen adventure that ended with him realizing he relied on SpongeBob and needed to move back
@@deutschermichel5807 i mean, you could consider there as being a larger entity. a town, township, city, county, state, and nation all have different "main" leaders. at least, that's how it works in the united states, but i would imagine most countries have some sort of tiered structure, just with different power balances. bikini bottom could be like the queens county of the region it is in, while neptune is the acting power for a large area of the sea. given his abilities and status, i would imagine he is very powerful.

I think the weirdest Spongebob inconsistency I ever saw was in The Healthy Krab. In that episode, Mr. Krabs basically loses it due to stress and snaps on Squidward, ripping the boat Squidward works in out of the wall and rowing it with a paddle to chase him around the Krusty Krab. When that happens, you can see that for some reason the boat is connected to the grill in the kitchen, because you can see it visible through the hole left behind by the missing boat and that it is now unplugged. Squidward later runs back into the kitchen to escape Mr. Krabs and accidentally lands on the grill, which burns him as he proclaims "The grill is still on!" The grill that is still VISIBLY UNPLUGGED in that same shot...
I guess he just assumes the grill is on? I doubt squidward cares enough to remember which parts of the krustry Krab are connected,and the stovetop happened to still be hot
The inconsistencies with the houses could be explained away by Bikini Bottom always blowing up. This also could explain the population. However, a lot of people just die in the show anyway so that also explains it.
Tbh the only crime we really see is by SpongeBob and his friends, no idea how they haven’t been locked up yet. It’s really odd how bikini bottom is shown to be really small and a rural place yet it has so much infrastructure.

Spongebob is the kind of cartoon where these inconsistencies are expected, so imo that makes it especially fun to dig in and try and make sense of it. The main thing that always drove me nuts was the King Neptune thing. I can see why they wanted him different for the movie, but I dunno, you could have come up with a different name. Could've just used Poseidon, that way we could have still had the OG neptune as a character lmao
i never cared about the continuity of the show but when i was a kid i had a spongebob cd with this song called ‘employee of the month’ on it. there’s this one part where spongebob says “if it weren’t for me, this place would fall apart” about the krusty krab and little me was SO MAD because spongebob would never be that arrogant!!

I always liked to think Squidward did have his bedroom on the first level, but then freaky stuff like that kept happening and thought it may feel more comfortable to have some sort of buffer between him and spongebob, so he moved his room upstairs so he had a bit more time to react if spongebob ever invaded his home again

The part at the end of "I'm With Stupid" where SpongeBob runs through Patrick's wall also makes no sense, since that scene implies that there's a wall of sand around Patrick's house, with the rock being a sort of dome roof, and them being on ground-level; but as previously established, it's supposed to be underground.

Video got recommended to me btw^^' Well, I wanted to mention that is bugging me since years too, It's about Plankton being Scared of Pearl since she is a whale, but that is something that confuses me since in 1 episode back in the 1 - 3 seasons, plankton changed his life with Mr. Krabs and Plankton was not scared of Pearl at all, but later in next seasons, suddenly he is scared of pearl and acts like he saw her for the first time and it still breaks my head lol
tbf he says when he first gets scared of her "I've seen those documentaries" so apparently he didn't know beforehand that whales ate plankton. it also could've been that bc of the life-switching circumstances of when they met before he wasn't worried abt pearl eating him. what's rlly confusing is the "plankton's intern" ep acting like plankton doesn't know pearl is krabs' daughter when he def did before lol

What drives me nuts about Squidward’s house is that the two windows that make up the eyes of his home switch between being apart of either his bedroom or his art/music studio. I remember that occupying a concerning amount of space in my head as a child.

The inconsistency that bothers me the most - The Krusty Krab Patty Vault from Just One Bite. Apparently they have MOUNTAINS of Krabby patties stored up just in case, which actually kinda makes sense for a fast food restaurant. And it would explain how the fuck the Krusty Krab even operates when Spongebob has a day off and can't cook fresh ones, they just reheat the ones from the Vault. But the Vault is never seen again after that, or mentioned. Because they've done 30 thousand plots where Spongebob goes missing and the Krusty Krab is immediately in shambles. But then in OTHER episodes, like the Wringer, Spongebob can be sent home by Mr. Krabs and everything is fine.
The vault was destroyed by the explosion we saw Squidward made or dint bother keeping it after Squidward ate like eighty percent of it Mr Krabs is shown competent on making the patties so he does it and Squidward was like only shown like a idiot in hooks while he shown doing actually good in any other episode plankton becoming mr Krabs,a time when both SpongeBob and Squidward switched roles,and many more dude just does not like doing it
I've seen other people mention that in Pizza Delivery the city that Squidward walks away from is not Bikini Bottom but I always thought that it was. And that it was another example of the show being inconsistent with details like what Bikini Bottom looked like especially because Pizza Delivery was barely episode 5
Can't be we see them go the opposite direction from it with the rock somewhat far also yet when they back it only a little there already back in the Krusty krab which is close to bikini bottom also they where on a hill overlooking the place which does not exist in any area of bikini bottom except for jellyfish fields which is confirmed 50 miles away from it

They didn't need to drive to his super nearby house, especially since SpongeBob's driving only causes him and Squidward to completely go to the middle of nowhere.

I think the physical inconsistencies in SpongeBob are part of why the show is so fun to talk about. It's like pointing out how weird and inconsistent SpongeBob's world is adds another layer of humor to the show.
I think most people don't care about SpongeBob's consistency, because its fluidity is the only consistent part. Whenever i notice a contradiction, i think "Yeah of course, it's SpongeBob". Maybe watching the whole Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo has lobotomized that part of my brain, who knows.
Idk if this helps but Patrick’s grill is also shown in the episode where SpongeBob begs Patrick for the special Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy playing cards. Patrick starts scraping his grill clean with one of the cards

Never thought being an old fart would be useful, but the yellow bamboo thing on top of Patrick's rock is supposed to be UHF-VHF Outdoor antenna. Back before cable, those things were everywhere on roofs in order to pick up TV signals. And since it's an early design from the show, it still has that Tiki-bar aesthetic.

The best explanation I have about Bikini Bottom's population count is that it's a small enough town that a highway could easily be built through it to connect two large cities close by. Either that or it's big with tourism for some reason (maybe the Krusty Krab, I can imagine Krabby Patties being world-renowned).

Well in defense of the episode "Plankton", perhaps the initial design was to have Squidwards bedroom on the first floor considering it is the first season.
what's rlly funny is that due to how that scene plays out, they had to design it like squidward just has a bedroom and nothing else--bc spongebob going from outside to the bedroom to outside again is just a straight shot thru 2 walls lol
But in the literal next episode we see him having a second floor with the other episodes in that season like sandy rocket that his bedroom in the second floor so it already inconsistent in the same season
Some say Squidward moved his bed upstairs due to SpongeBob breaking into his bedroom in "Plankton!" Funny thing is that aside from the Squidward bedroom scene, the rest of the "Plankton!" episode where SpongeBob learns about the Plankton for the first time has that continuity point kept the remainder of the series. At least until Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years where a younger SpongeBob already knows who Plankton is as being the chef at Kamp Koral.
The easiest way to explain the total inconsistency in the structure and layout of the entire town and individual houses is the same as Springfield: Everything is as fluid or as set as the plot demands. Nowhere is this more obvious than the fact that the Chum Bucket literally doesn't exist unless the plot needs it (Seriously, there's countless cases of there just being nothing across the street).
I think the Krusty Krab menu changing is just like how fast food places in real life will make menu changes in order to attract customers and increase profits, but still keeping the mainstay items that made them wealthy in the first place.
