A while back at my local Cabelas I found a 60's vintage Mossberg 3-round, internal magazine, bolt action .410 shotgun. It is the most bizarre firearm I have ever seen in person and I absolutely had to have it.

Seems like a good option for home defense if you have recoil sensitive people in the home. I have a shockwave 12 gauge and it's nice and compact but it kicks like a mule. The only problem... The price. I saw one of these last year on the shelf for $760. That's pretty steep for what it is. You could find a youth model 410 pump for way less and accomplish the same thing. But, as a former 1887 mares leg owner, this configuration is fun to shoot. Guns don't always need to fill a role.

I have a Henry .22 Mare's Leg and I can do the Terminator 2 spin reload with that (I only do it with an empty tube because there is a critical point in the spin where a loaded gun is pointed at your face/chest)

hey dude! i see you're still responding to new comments, so i was wondering; have you had any issues with this gun since the making of this video? i've been looking into them because i REALLY want a lever action shotgun, and these are the only good ones in this configuration that i can find that are still being made. however, when i was handling one in the gun store... it jammed up on me. the lifter got frozen and locked up the action. it looked like it somehow got sprung higher than it was supposed to, and part of the front end of it got hung up on the rim of the ejection port and partially blocked the bore. my old pal that works there said it went out of time because it wasn't used to being worked so much without shells in it. i have seen zero complaints about this gun everywhere i've looked, so if you've had a bad (or good) experience with it over the past 4 years, i'd love to know!

You figure out any way to hold the Axe on-target whilst cycling the action before you changed out the furniture? This is basically the only lever action "firearm" that I've seen asides the Winchester 1887 and every video I've seen everyone pulls it down and back to cycle the lever. While this is great for the range, I'm wondering if there's a way to make this fun gun a little more serious. Without that contact point on my shoulder, cycling it always pulls the muzzle upward. Maybe I just need a vertical grip ;) -- Thanks!!

can you and is it legal to shoot .45 long colt or whatever it was that interchanges on bunch of other fire arms with .410 shotgun shells, and would it make any sense?

It can shoot .45 Colt, it's legal to do so. It has no rifling in the barrel however so it will not stabilize. Not every .45 Colt gun will interchange with .410 and not every .410 will interchange with a .45 Colt either. The reason the Henry .410's will shoot the .45 Colt is they are built off the barrels and receivers of their .45-70 Big Boy rifles, which is why they will only handle a 2 1/2 inch .410 and not a full 3 inch as it's too long. The bore diameter is still the same as the .45-70 so being for a .45 caliber load the .410 will fire just fine. So in short... no wouldn't make any sense unless it's all you had and you were extremely close up.

Paul Harrel has a video on the .410 shotgun effectiveness with all the various loads. Seems like it would be something the weak shooters in the Law Enforcement field could just hand from the belt. The #3 Buck is as deadly as any load in any shotgun. You can see that in Paul's video. Since the average LE Cop has only a 25% hit rate in real life this could let them miss less.

You appreciate that by supplying it with only a full choke, Henry have restricted your ammunition choices? Bird shot is great for vermin control, but I definitely want something stouter against anything bigger.

Spin cocking is pretty easy on my Marlin 1895 Dark. I haven’t tried it the way you did though. I’d jump all over one of these Henry Axes if they weren’t so damn expensive. I mean I get it, it’s no 870 but still, hard to justify for a .410 even though it is cool...knock $150 off that MSRP and I’d consider it. Also I love the “if it’s cold in the garden” haha I got a good chuckle out of that.

@@sidneezingara1976 the problem with a weapon like this is what to use it for after the new gun buzz wears off. You can’t hunt with it and it’s likely to not be allowed in most indoor shooting ranges and there’s a lot better choices for home/self defense so it’s simply a “fun gun” which is great but that where the cost benefit starts creeping in. That being said, I’d absolutely buy one for $500 or less

All of the shotgun powders I have are on the faster side of the burn rate chart. Maybe that's why velocity doesn't suffer much in the shorter barrel.

Form 1s wait time has gone from roughly 30 days to 50+ over the last few months. I've done a bunch this year and the two I am waiting on right now are at 51 days. The longest wait prior was 38 days and typically 30 right on the dot.

I know I'm talking a television gun, but it appears to look like a mare's leg ... used by Steve McQueen in Wanted: Dead or Alive ... though not a shotgun, it used a pretty massive rifle round, lever action with a similar hand / butt stock. The firearm did / does exist ... though was never mass produced, that I know of. Steve McQueen did own one, and there were others produced.

Henry makes "Mare's Legs" in .357, .44, .45 Colt and I believe .41 Magnum. Rossi had the Ranch Hand which was in .357 and .45 Colt. The Axe of course is taking the same concept but applying it to a shotgun.

I normally never say this about firearms but...what's the point? A S&W Governor does all this but better, except less velocity. It shoots .410, 45LC and .45 ACP with moon clips, has 6 shots, is lighter "scandium" and has a night site front site. You can actually carry it to the garden in a holster and there is no need to Form 1 it. Plus, I guarantee you can shoot 6 through a Governor faster than the Henry firearm. I understand the regular shotgun version but this one, seems impractical.

Guns like the Axe are mostly there for fun but also to show how pointless the laws on these matters are. I hate to say it, but no, the Governor does NOT do all that but better. Using handgun specific loads in the Governor or Taurus Judge while patterns and performance are good, the longer barrel with a choke on the Henry will be tighter up close and farther away. The Henry CAN shoot .45 Colt, but it has no rifling so it won't stabilize. That said, .410 slugs exist and do just fine for any solid projectile needs. The Governor is quite versatile and overall is not as bad of a gun as many would say given their reputation, but it doesn't make it the clear victor in this particular case. As somebody who owns and shoots a lot of .410 and has the Taurus Raging Judge Magnum and have owned the regular Judge and shot the Governor on several instances and even have a Circuit Judge Carbine what I can say is as a general purpose tool... Yes, I'd rather the Governor for a variety of different reasons. But if it was say strictly home defense, or a trail gun, I'd rather the Henry. In very specific and defined roles that's where many guns outshine the Governor or Judge. It's when you're trying to cover as many as possible where they become more appealing.

Classification as a "firearm" is superfluous for a .410 as you can already get handguns in the caliber. "Firearm" is only useful for 28 gauge and up. I wanna see an 8 gauge one.

You stole my idea! I've been dying to get this gun, but Maryland tends to classify these as "handguns" (like they've done with the Shockwave) and therefore it needs to be on the Handgun Registry. The board has met twice since it's release and no one has submitted it for review!

They will actually shoot .45 Colt. But there's no rifling, so it wont stabilize. The Henry's in .410 are based on their .45-70 lever actions, which is why they're a 2 1/2 inch .410 chamber only, but the bore size is still the same as the .45-70, so you can still fit and fire a .45 Colt.

@@ApurtureSci The Henry uses a .454 diameter on their .410 shotguns. So yes, it can shoot a .45 Colt no problem just it lacks rifling. Under normal circumstances I'd never advocate something but it has been tested and measured.

Anybody else care to share their weird guns? Weirdest gun I own is the Ideal conceal 380. Weird not because it's a cellphone gun but because it's 500 bucks and has a lot of play in the lockup, extractor, folding mechanism, etc. and all while being priced at a premium.

Not to sound like an internet expert, but you should seriously stop flipping that thing around before you blow a hole in your body. When you dropped it, my buthole puckered.

The important thing is you never try to catch a dropped gun. Let it go to the ground and recover it calmly. Modern shotguns are drop safe and the Axe is no different.
