Wise words. Same happened with spanish in the caribbean area, which sounds so different from Spain's, but so similar to Canarias Islands, which were the actual Spanish that came to colonize this region

Actually the opposite is true. Quebecois is strongly anti anglicism.

They've absorbed many English words just like the French have. Weekend, parking, club, lol, sport, camping etc.

A lot of languages do this. Hindi speakers will add english words a lot. I work with a few hindi speakers and they use English a lot in a conversation.

The relationship and stereotypes between Europe and North America have a lot of parallels in the English speaking and French speaking world. We've got some fairly distinctive dialects in North America (Acadia, Ontario, Louisiana, and the other pockets of North American French share a lot of historical roots and form a broad dialect family along with Quebec's multiple dialects and accents). It's a bit like how a Scottish, Southern US or perhaps Kiwi accent (thinking of their vowel shifts) sound to other English speakers... strong regional accent with phonetic shifts, some unique vocabulary and it get a lot more unique as it gets more informal. In formal registers of speech, you've basically got just a regional accent and some mild vocabulary variations to parse. I've never had any trouble being understood by a European client in French but of course, I won't use informal styles of speech in a business context. What really exaggerates a lot of French caricatures of Quebec's French is that a lot of their exposure comes from either Québécois movies (which tend to focus on working class everyman figures, especially characters with Montreal working class urban accents - imagine if British movies typically had Cockney east ender everyman types as their protagonists) or via the Internet (lots of young RU-vidrs speaking in intentionally informal speech to sound casual and laid back). Ironically, Montreal has one of the stronger and more distinctive accents, especially the old urban working class accent, and that's the one they tend to think we all sound like. French folks are usually a bit puzzled when they hear accents from central and eastern Quebec for the first time. Those regions sound quite different (and apparently are easier to understand for most Europeans). It's like a person encountering a middle classed Edinburgh Scots English accent when you were expecting working class Glaswegian Scots. You still hear that they're Scottish but it's a lot less daunting to an outsider. The southern drawl stereotype has some truth to it. A full blown Glaswegian Scots or a really broad Australian accent (full of Aussie lingo) would be closer to the effect of a thick working class Quebecois accent. You can definitely parse it and recognize it as the same language but you might do a double take and need a little time to get use to the differences.

@@paranoidrodent there’s such a range of English dialects in the US alone, c’est très bizarre (i.e Midwest, west coast, bostonian). each have their own accent along with words and terms unique to the region (i.e “uff da!” and “fer cute!” in the midwest) [edit was for spelling]

I think there's a part of just pure Wuebec Bashing, because when I hear it it comes mostly from English Canadians. I am used to hear this, so we formed a bit of an armor, but yeah, pleased to see some others may like it, even though it may not be to everyone's taste.

There are multiple accents throughout Quebec. Some are more musical to the ears than others! Its similar in any language that has multiple accents.(Russian doesnt appear to have multiple accents).

French from French in general dont like Quebec accent but when it’s from other people who don’t speak it’s generally because they don’t like french people as a whole

Quebec accent is disgusting. In French you’re already not saying half the 💩 you write but Quebecois people swallow the other half when they talk. It sounds really bad and uneducated, like some hillbilly speaking. I’ve been living in Montreal in the last three years and still dreading to re-learn French with all the pressure Legault and his goons are putting on people in this province. If they weren’t so forceful maybe people would be more willing to learn this annoying language. Damn you Pierre Trudeau.

Quit your crying! I spent Christmas in Montreal many years ago, and even Montreal is only 6 hrs north from where I am from, It felt quite a bit colder than what I am used to.

@@smoker_joe Il n'y a pas de traduction de "chiac". Le chiac est le nom donné à une variété de langue, ou un "dialecte" pour ceux qui préfèrent l'appeler comme ça, qui est parlé au Nouveau-Brunswick. Le problème est que la personne qui a fait les sous-titres a entendu "chiant" au lieu de "chiac" qui est un mot totalement différent.

I know right! Quebecois french is a little closer to English than Parisian french because of its proximity to other English-speaking provinces in Canada, so for Anglophones like me it is easier to learn Quebecois

@@Caswell19 There is actually more English mixed in France French than Quebec French. Quebec has language protection laws where France does not, more and more English is being used in France French.

Easier to understand than what? For me, the easiest French in Canada to understand is that of the city of Québec. The most difficult are Acadian and Chiac (NB: Some people consider Chiac a separate portmanteau language rather than a French dialect). The Joual accent of Montréal is also quite difficult.

I have heard that Canadian French dialects can be easier to comfortably learn, from a phonetic standpoint, for a Brazilian Portuguese speaker. I am told it has something to do with how both dialects tend to open their mouths more widely than their European counterparts when speaking. I honestly don't know how true that is but I have heard a Brazilian person who moved to Canada mention it, so I guess it is true for at least some people. We French Canadians tend to speak with broader and more open mouth movements than European French speakers, a bit like how Mexican Spanish is spoken. It's largely what causes some of our vowel sounds to be different from European standard French.

I wanted to add another angle. Many of the geographical names along the northern Mississippi date back to the French Settlement times, and their current pronunciations upset French majors. But the Chair of Romance languages at St Louis University said they reflect older French pronunciations, like "Gravois" is said pretty much the way it is spelled.

Je pense que la dame au début a simplement donné un portrait simple et FACTUEL sur le Québec avec ces lunettes de Montréalaise. Je ne vois pas en quoi c'était fédéraliste. Oui, c'est faux de dire que le Québec est bilingue, ce n'est vraiment pas le cas, bien que notre Pays à deux langues officielles. Ce serait comme de dire que l'Ontario est bilingue parce qu'il y a des Franco-Ontarien. Ce n'est pas réaliste. Le fait d'être une province Canadienne n'enlève rien à notre culture distincte. À mon avis, le plus grand crime de cette video c'est de laisser que les Montréalais expliquer c'est quoi le Québec...

Et la première réponse qui lui vient à l'esprit c'est "une province du Canada bilingue" sans aucune notion de particularité québécoise. Je crois que toute personne qui répond spontanément cette réponse à cette question est sans aucun doute très fédéraliste. Ça ne lui enlève rien celà dit, je ne faisais que dire ça dans mon commentaire comme l'auditoire de cette vidéo a l'air assez international et intéressé au Québec. Pour le focus, Montréalais, je suis d'accord avec toi. Les Montréalais sont assez différents du reste du Québec et ne peuvent pas le représenter à eux seuls, reste que pour une vidéo d'apprentissage du français je trouve que ça passe.
