What do you think about Tasmania? This video actually makes me want to visit. The people seem super friendly and welcoming. I like to see how proud they are of their home too.

Tips. Expect a lot of 2 or 3 fingered handshakes if you visit. Uncontrolled head shaking is normal. Don’t stare. Just nod when they nod. You’ll be fine.
@jamussmyth1612

If you want overpriced “craft beer”, freezing weather and a reminder of how your forebearer Scottish brethren were brutally beaten to a pulp for minor indiscretions, Tasmania is the “place to be”. It’s not as though there is a shortage of those destinations around the world.
@jamussmyth1612
@jamussmyth1612 Год назад
Most of the “blokes” in that video didn’t have a girlfriend. Some appeared to be transitioning. Join the dots. Tasmania classifies blokes without a manicure as being “a bogan”. The reason they are all wearing “hoodies” and “beanies” is to cover up their circumscison scars.

Gotta laugh at the “sheliah” who suggested that Tasmania has “great beaches”. Very cheeky. It’s great, right until the point you dip your toes in the water, and the hypothermia sets in.

The "dark history" comment could refer to a few things. The convict settlements were some of the harshest; the Port Arthur Massacre which was so shocking it was the impetuous for the extremely strict gun control laws in Australia; the sad way in which the Tasmanian Tiger (Thylacine) became extinct, and the decimation of the Tasmanian Aboriginals, a people that no longer exist because of the British colonists. Having said all that, every place has its dark past, the best thing we can do is remember it, learn from it and grow.

Tasmania is absolutely stunning and I actually appreciate the cooler weather. I would live there in a flash if someone else would do the moving for me. The ribbing between Tassie & the mainland is purely for fun. There's nothing serious behind it.

Irish born, lived in UK for a few years then we moved to Perth Western Australia, now Tasmania.. great place. Beautiful scenery, food, local drinkies, great friendly people. You can go from beach one day to a snow covered mountain the next ( and i have, sunburnt neck on a Monday driving in a blizzard Tuesday evening). We came for a holiday and 15 years (and a few visits) later we moved for retirement. Best move we ever made.

Having been born in England and lived a year in Scotland I can attest that the weather down here is absolutely nothing like that of England and definitely far hotter than Scotland. Winter day time temperatures average around 13c for the majority of the population centres and almost never drop below 8c , summers average around 21c but temperatures are often in the high twenties and very occasionally in the high 30's. As a temperature maritime climate the weather can change rapidly with 15c+ temperature drops in just a few minutes however this is rare. March and April are the most settled months with relatively constant temperatures and calm conditions. Simply stunning at that time of the year. That said it can snow at anytime of the year but rarely below 300-400 metres in the winter and rarely below 800metres at other times. If it does it usually melts within a couple of hours of the sun rising. As for rain unless you live on the west or North West coast Tasmania is extremely dry with Hobart the second driest of all Australian capital cities just slightly behind Adelaide. It is an absolutely stunning place to live as it is safe, clean and beautiful. The only problem is too many mainlanders have now discovered it and moving here in droves.😂

Born and raised in Sydney, I lived in Tassie for a few years and it has truly the most beautiful natural landscapes; the air is pure and the seafood is extraordinary. The drawback for me (not being a local) was that you couldn't just get in your car and go visit your friends, it's either by boat or aeroplane. A slice of paradise though.

Same with me, moved over there for work during Covid 20/21, I had no circles so found it hard to meet people. Joined a meetup group through but they died down when COVID came hard to Tassie in 2021 (3-day lockdowns :P). Was expensive to rent as well, local produce can be cheaper than other states as they have a lot of variety but fuel was generally 20 cents dearer per liter my large Patrol tank in Melbourne at the time costed around $200-$220 compared to Tassie $250-$270 and I was driving a lot more to get around the traffic blocks, so that was costing me every 1-2 weeks. Loved the place but came back to Melbourne to be with my family and friends and more job oppertunities as Melbourne opened back up post-covid lockdowns.

I'm from Tassie and lived here all my life. I even run a youtube channel posting videos about exploring Tasmania and I'm still blown away by the beauty of the place and still find things I haven't see before. People assume it's a small place that can be seen in a week, but once you get here most tourists realise you really need months to see it properly.

People carry on about the cold, but we left England to come to a warmer climate and Tassie fits the bill perfectly! Lots of Australia is way too hot for me, I lived in a hot state for quite a long time, and was glad to return here to TAS, where the weather is milder. Warmer than the UK, but cool enough to have the same greenery and gorgeous vegetation. Love the pristine environment here!

As a Queenslander turned Tasmanian I can attest I live in the best state. The beaches are incredibly beautiful down here, but the water is cold. The winters are freezing but the summers aren’t unbearably hot. We do have forester kangaroos, they’re a Tasmanian subspecies of the Eastern Grey. Our flora and fauna are unique which draws naturalists from all around the world. The mainland is great for a holiday but Tassie is home 🫶🏼

Though I'm a (mainlander) I think Taswegins are the luckiest Aussies , they have the cleanest air and water on the planet their climate is more like England than anywhere else in AUS and the scenery is spectacular . The dark past the bystander was referring to was that Tasmania had the harshest convict settlement in Australia and they had Australia's worst mass shooting in our history and was the cause of the firearms ban that's now in place . On the bright side Tasmanian produce is some of the best in the world , fruit cheese , beef , fish , beer and wine and they also produce the best whisky in the world , I know your having apoplexy right now but they actually won a competition against all whisky producing countries including Scotland . We make fun of our Tasmanian brothers and sisters but if anyone else does we will sort the buggers out .

Over my 70+ years I have travelled some 400,000km around this great country of ours and I'v spent 2 stints of 3 months each travelling around Tassie, and if I was younger would move there in an instant. Tassie and Western Australia are the best 2 states in the country. Of all the mainlanders I'v met in Tasmania, none would ever return to the mainland. For retirees its magic because both the rental properties and jobs are hard to find. Houses were the cheapest although with the popularity of the state house prices have increased at a greater rate than the mainland. Tassie is about a 12 hour trip by car ferry from the mainland.or 1.5 hours by plan. climate has been likened to Briton; Tassie! Great place

The East Coast is the whitest sand beaches and crystal clear turquoise waters. The highlands have dozens of lakes and the oldest golf course anywhere outside Scotland. We have about two dozen whisky distilleries, some have won best in the world. Trout fishing, oysters, salmon, wine, cheese. It’s magical.

I was born and raised in Tasmania, sorry my parents were not at all related, just by marriage! I had the safest, most interesting and diverse upbringing! My teachers were from different European countries and cultures, and the educational standards are exceptional! We had many seasonal workers from all over Europe, and my grandmother had Uni students staying with her from Asia! I was safe to wander anywhere and dream big dreams, and maybe because my parents came from large families we spread out all over, there was always somewhere to stay on holidays! It was hard when I moved to Sydney, everyone was wary or unfriendly at first, and generally less culturally aware - everyone knew of my sister or grandmother or father in Tasmania! I'm still a proud Tasmanian, and would defend it always, but it would be dreadful to see it overpopulated and the environment endangered! It has the best food and air anywhere, there are no chemicals and huge environmental consciousness, and the nicest people anywhere! BUT, please keep it a secret - Adelaide is very nice, please invade there first - Thanks! 🤗👍

Tasmania is about 240kms from the mainland of Australia, no that isn't the bridge to Victoria, that's the bridge over the Derwent River, the Tasman Bridge. It has it's own history having collapsed in 1975 when a ship struck it, 12 people were killed that day. The dark history they are referring to is the genocide of the Aboriginal people in Tasmania by Governor Arthur between 1824 and 1832. I've been to Tasmania a few times and I can agree, it is a beautiful place. It reminds me of an English countryside town, but these are my memories from 30 years ago so I am sure it has changed, somewhat. I also love their beer, James Boags is my favourite.

No, there isn’t a bridge, it is too far.when I went we had a cabin on an overnight boat and the next time we went by plane. I was born in Sydney but I love the cold. I was in a blizzard in Tasmania and I loved it. Now I am older my bones tell me to go back in Summer. People in Tasmania are as friendly as the people in Melbourne. It is a good place and I found lots to do. The one that said Sydney only have Bondi beach didn’t finish school or take Geography. Tassie is motorcycling heaven and is THE perfect holiday destination . As it’s tiny you can ride right around it in half an hour and you’re guaranteed to meet all nineteen Tasmanians because they’re all proud of their paddymelons and will rush out of their little Hobbit houses to show them to you when they hear your engine coming ! Be warned though , they will be drunk because they all brew world class whiskey and beer and have their own wineries . When it’s raining , they’ve trained their dairy cows to come in and milk themselves and make cheese , which is second to none by the way , and is relished in the mornings as a famous Tassie hangover cure .

Australia is extremely diverse in her people, her culture, her flora and fauna and her weather. If you come to Australia and only visit one or two capitol cities, you will see nothing you haven't seen in other countries. Sure, the people might be friendlier, the architecture different and the weather warmer. But if you want to get to know what Australia is truly like, you really need to travel around the whole of Australia. Only after experiencing the Top End in the wet and dry seasons, the Outback desert, Alice Springs, Coober Pedy, the Pilbara Region, Broome, Queensland's North, Darwin, only then will understand what a stunning and fascinating place Australia really is.

Tasmania is often described as being like the Scottish highlands visually. One third of our island is World Heritage for its unique wilderness. Before 1856, Tasmania was called Van Diemen’s Land, and we became a major convict settlement. This naturally led to skirmishes with the Aboriginal people and a period of intense fighting known now as the Black Wars. Port Arthur is where the hardened and reoffending criminals were sent and it is also now a World Heritage site. I’m born and bred Tasmanian, but I’ve travelled the world and lived in three other states. I choose to live in Tasmania and count my blessings every day.

We are 'the map of Tassie' after all 😅🤭, so we must have something going for us 🤷🏼‍♀️. I remember a Victorian saying to me when did I have the operation, I said eh what, and they said well, your second head has been removed. The jokes get rather old after awhile, but we take it on the chin. Our cost of living, housing is not cheap anymore, it's now on par with the rest of the country, in a lot of cases unaffordable. Our dark history, includes the harsh treatment of convicts, and our indigenous people and the massacre at Port Arthur🥺. Tassie might not be a young person's haven, but we all love it all the same. As cute, fluffy and huge they are, Bumble bees are a introduced species, which isn't good for our natives. Oh, by the way, Tasmania does have kangaroos, it's the Forester kangaroo along with wallabies etc. 👍 🤗

I’ve lived in Tassie all of my life. I like the charm of Tasmania and that there are no huge shopping centres like the rest of Australia. As far as the mainland goes, people come to our state and think they’re been overseas if they come here. Every day of my life I wake up and I’m thankful I live here - being born here is like winning the Jackpot to start with. The beach is 5 minutes away and we have a north facing house - I’m a passive solar house fan. In winter we get enough sun to not need heating if the sun is out. We may be colder but that’s a reason people come here to retire - to escape the heat of other states On the downside my younger son Joe and my daughter Sally had to leave the state in order to get work. My elder son, Sam, wouldn’t live anywhere else. Tasmania is the best kept secret.

I live in Tassie, the pros are the scenery, quietness, livability, weather, size, small population and hospitality. The cons an ageing population, difficulty in finding work (there seems to be a lot of nepotism), housing, poorer wages, higher cost of living and the movement of the young to the mainland for work. The mainlanders come here or to Queensland to retire depending on what weather they like best. Tourism seems to be mostly within the months of October until April. Come down and see for yourself…

Also, Tasmania's convict past is pretty dark. They're all dark, I suppose: Norfolk Island, Moreton Bay, and Port Macquarie gave Van Diemen's Land a run for its money in the Human Cruelty Stakes. But that doesn't make that bit of Tasmania's past any less dark.

I'm originally from Victoria, Tassie's closest neighbor, and I only ever went there for one weekend, and that was for a boxing match (not me, a friend). It looked alright; the people seemed fine; I have no bones with them. When I was growing up, we just never saw any advertising to draw tourists to Tasmania. Meanwhile, we were bombarded with advertising for Sydney, Darwin and many Queensland destinations. I now live in Queensland, I guess the marketing worked. Looking back, having travelled to over 40 countries but never have travelled to Western Australia, so I can see that there is a bit of the "same, same" thing going on. If I fly 5 hours to Perth to experience different scenery, yet experience the same culture, then I could add a couple of hours flight time and be in southeast Asia, where I get different scenery AND vastly different cultures and experiences. Australia has always been isolated and this has probably caused us to look outward, rather than inward. This is for cultural and security reasons. Thinking about current geopolitical confluences, maybe Tasmania should court China with their Belt and Road policy. That would make the Australian 'Mainland' pay attention really quickly. It worked a treat for a couple of island nations usually supported by Australia.

I'm from Tasmania, currently living in the town of Longford. Tassie would be the most English of the states. Where the other states had a large migration of different cultures, Tassie didn't have that large a influx, although the last 20 yrs it had changed. The weather is a lot like the UK, a temperate climate with cold winters. Most of the population is in the cities with a scattering of towns. If you look at a map you will see the population around the north with a middle corridor going to the south to Hobart, our largest city. It has a history of being undeveloped with a low education outcomes and a large underemployment. Living tends to be cheaper here. People are more casual and easy going. The thing Tassie is famous for is the environment. We have the cleanest air and water anywhere in the world, all our electricity is hydro. You are around 15 min away from a forest, with forest taking up 50% of our land mass. We also have a huge temperate rainforest. Bush walking and camping is everywhere. People come here from the mainland to take a break from the fast pace. We also have a lot of events that people travel from around the world to see. It is a good place to live, as long as you're not expecting anything over exciting.
@1legend517

That was interesting. Being from Perth I didn't know much about Tasmania or Hobart. It's not just Tasmania that gets left out of things, it's us in Western Australia as well. Even though we're part of the mainland we often get treated like a separate unimportant place.

The bridge is over the River Derwent, Hobart is separated by the two shores - the older (Government House and Historic city) and newer suburbs! The biggest problem is the lack of Large Businesses to employ large amounts of locals (particularly in Launceston) although things are improving, most businesses are smaller or family run! Of course, a few goods are more expensive because of distance, but electricity is cheaper as they have hydro power! It is much more friendly than Sydney, which many people find intimidating! Europeans love it! Yes, less likely to be invaded!! 👍 Fantastic music and art scene! 💯 Everything is just a few hours away! 😀 World's best Roses! 👍 The cold is from the wind, it's actually warmer than Canberra! 😒😁 I love Jackie Lambie! 🙁🤩 Far less Bogans than Queensland! 😂😉 Proud! 👍

We moved to Tassie from Sydney almost one year ago. The whole state has 10% of the population of Sydney so there is waay less traffic and crowds. We live in the Huon Valley where the scenery is stunning and brings joy to the soul. We love the people and the ones around here tend to be more self sufficient. Nope, a bridge from the mainland to Tassie would be about 200km (??) long 😅 Poor old Tassie is the butt of a few jokes, but they're all in fun. Ppl who visit from the mainland love it. The dark history refers to Port Arthur, about 100km south of Hobart. It was a horribly cruel convict settlement for many years. It was also the site of a horrific mass murder in 1996 I think you covered that in a previous video. As for bogans, the stereotype is rough, tough, crass, plays loud metal music, wouldn't want to meet them in a back alley etc.

I was born on the Mainland and moved to Tasmania I have lived in most States and capital cities and I would not swap my home here for anywhere else the simple fact that we have no idea about traffic jams here it is relaxed and friendly the minus points are that we are starved a bit for choice down here and major companies avoid us because our population is spread out and they think they would not be profitable but apart from that you cant beat the place. and on the coastal areas it is no colder than western Sydney in winter it is a fallacy that it is too cold down here . of course we have our cold parts up in the mountains but you have to expect that. if you want tropical weather go to Queensland. I wonder how they would feel if they were left off the map.

Most of the commentary relates to Hobart - things can be very different outside cities, even a small city like Hobart. It can be hard to find a decent place to eat and night life is almost non-existent. On the other hand, it’s beautiful, quiet, and the locals are welcoming, on the whole. Services outside cities are poor generally. The scattered population has detrimental effects on health and education services and the political performance is woeful. Housing cost and scarcity is a real problem, especially when you consider that wages are generally substantially lower than on the mainland. It can be next to impossible to find shops that actually carry enough stock to be useful and like most islands, the cost of bringing in goods is pretty high. Tasmania has wonderful fresh produce but you won’t often be able to find it outside the main centres because small populations mean low customer turnover and limited choice. Even supermarkets import a large proportion of their fresh produce from major distribution centres and if there is Tasmanian product available it often goes to the mainland to be packaged and returned to the point of sale. Not so fresh by then! Many visitors are charmed by Tasmania but if they are planning to become residents I would advise them to do their research carefully and come here with a realistic appreciation that not all the differences are compensated for by the charm.
