My name is Sanjay Gupta and in my last video, I decried the over-zealous prescription of medications which may have no or limited benefit for the patient. In this video, i wanted to explore this further with respect to Aspirin which is commonly prescribed for prevention or treatment of heart disease. This video is enigmatically entitled ‘Welcome to the primary Bank of Aspirin’.
The best banks to put your money in are those which keep your money safe and give you a good return for your investment and where your returns are not eroded by excessive additional charges or fines. In the same sense the best medications to take are those that are both safe but also in the long term offer a substantial return in terms of either improving quality of life and/or an improvement in length of life. Assessing the return in terms of quality of life is easy because you the individual can measure your quality of life and work out whether it has improved or not. Length of life is much more difficult because as an individual you will never know whether a medication has prolonged your life or not. So the only way to decide whether a medication offers good returns is to look at data that has been accrued from studies of patients just like us and use those data to decide whether the returns from taking that medication are good enough for us or not. If we think about it, this is how we decide to invest our money in a bank. We do our research to ensure that our capital will be safe and what rates of interest we would get before parting with our hard earned cash. Unfortunately we rarely do the same with the medications that we are asked to take. We just take medications because the doctor tells us it is good for us. We rarely ever ask ‘how good’. And the incredible thing is that this answer should be easily available because all quantitative research about using numbers to tell us how good something is and yet rarely are we given the number to help us make our decision. However trying to get these numbers is anything but easy because the numbers that really matter are often concealed in complex statistics and relative percentages rather than being completely transparent. In that sense, it is far easier to get numbers from bankers than it is from the pharma industry. In this video, i wanted to try and get those numbers and put them in front of you so that you can decide for yourselves whether the numbers are good enough to justify your investment in a particular medication. As always i would like to stress that please do not make any changes to your medications without speaking with your own healthcare provider as the information i present here may not be applicable to your unique situation.
Today i welcome you to the primary bank of Aspirin. This is called the Primary bank because it is only for those people who have never had a heart attack or a stroke but are looking to prevent one from happening by taking Aspirin daily. This video is not for those patients who have already had a heart attack or a stroke or stents or bypasses or some other form of vascular event who are trying to prevent a further event by taking Aspirin. For those people there exists the secondary bank of Aspirin which i shall talk about in a later video. So if you have never had a cardiac event or a stroke, the primary bank of Aspirin is the bank that you need to know about.

Ladies, I agree with all your comments - so glad I found this doctor! I originally had a 10 min. appointment with a doctor after nearly passing out one morning, a 3 min ECG and then handed out some blood thinners. Thing is blood thinners do not help AFib, only prevent clotting. Then I discovered Dr Gupta who recommended Magnesium. I have been taking Magnesium Taurate for just over 2 weeks and already have noticed a huge improvement and feel so much better. Many, many thanks Dr Sanjay ...

Dear Dr.Gupta, as always, thank you for your kind, patient explanations. My reason for taking 325mg aspirin for the past 37 years was because of a blood clot. My stomach does not seem bothered about it. Since it appears to cause no harm, my plan is to continue….but…thanks to you, I have more relevant information. Please keep up this wonderful service to your extended community.

For what it’s worth you can also easily search foods incl spices high in salicylic acid (aspirin) that also help w/o side effect and many benefits. No need to choose but if want or need to stop drug comes up there’s a natural choice. Husb stopped yrs ago after friend learned hard way about risk of sudden excess bleeding (car accident emerg surgery etc) w/no prior neg effects of aspirin felt. ER doc took his friend off immediately. Also search it and incr risk of heart attack or stroke. Apologies if I sound alarmist or neg. I respect all choice. Peace and health.

Thank you 🙏🏻 for your videos. Doctors don’t like their patients asking questions. I’ve had lots of different cardiologists because we moved a lot for my husband’s job. Unfortunately, I can’t say any of them did more than pass out drugs. And, if you don’t fit neatly into their boxes, they don’t know anything and don’t try to figure out your symptoms. I’ve even had several doctors drop me as their patient because I asked questions. It’s really a shame that trying to get answers about your health is such a threat to so many doctors. After my open heart surgery, I had allergic reactions to blood thinners and aspirin. My doctors had no answers for me and gave me a death sentence. Fortunately, I found Dr. Stephen Sinatra, and I followed his protocol. For the past 20 years, I’ve taken Nattokinase, garlic, Curcumin, and fish oil instead of blood thinners and aspirin. Seems to be working! 😉Thanks

Thanks Doc, I'm 72 take no meds, cut out sugar and carbs to reduce CV inflammation, would take a baby aspirin a couple times of week, but now I'll cut that out too. All the best to you and your family. You and Dr. Ford Brewer are the best here on YT. Dr. Brewer did a video on this same subject mentioning the ASPREE trial in October 2018 and came to the same conclusion.

Hello, Dr. Gupta, and thank you for these videos. It is so incredibly kind of you and encouraging for many of us who have had trouble finding good medical care. I am a POTS patient (and I LOVED your "Sleeping with the Enemy" series.) I'd like to say straight way that I feel very fortunate to have found my doctor, but I do test his limits, which has him sending me to an autonomic specialist. One reason I respect him so much! While he hasn't written me off or attributed my symptoms to be "all in my mind," he DOES want to be sure that since there is no real knowledgeable care in my immediate area, that he is doing his best to help. My question for you is concerning the fact that I now appear to have developed a second dysautonomia and I am worried I will not find care ANYWHERE. I've had POTS for 25 yrs, but it took almost half of that time to get a diagnosis! 2 yrs ago, I ended up with a very rare Strep infection in my knee. Spent a month in hospital, then 3 months on antibiotic IV home care. At almost the end of my IV care, I developed a fever again so they did a fluid aspiration, which completely ruined my leg. I was quickly diagnosed with CRPS, so now I am in horrific pain all the time (why I am watching the Aspirin vid...just to looking for help at 3 AM 😁.) I was out of my home town when this knee thing took place, but when I was able to return home, I started researching CRPS and found it is also a Dysautonomia...i am so scared after waiting yrs to be referred to a POTS specialist...will he be able to treat the CRPS also, or am I on another whole quest to find someone who can treat these comorbid issues in relation to eachother? Did my long-standing POTS set me up for ending up with CRPS...or did I just hit some dysautonomia jackpot??? Thanks you for your "Sleeping with the Enemy" series. I just suggested it to my doctor who seemed quite interested. So, I believe that you sharing that information will help educate another professional and possibly the next dysautonomia patient in my small town will not have to wait over 12 yrs suffering, with no answers and being referred as a mental patient! 😉 However, I am up at 3 AM because I already had so much pain with POTS (fybromalgia) and now CRPS, is definitely just too much pain to bear. Thanks for all you are doing...and my deepest condolences on the passing of your father. I belong to that "club" too, and my Daddy was my rock. A PHD who was at least curious and able to study and understand why I suffer so much. I miss him everyday also! ..Today being Father's Day. God grant you peace.

Thank you Dr Gupta for your excellent video and pulling all of the clinical data in very understandable form. I would love to see you do a video on the anti-inflammatory effects of curcumin and how it could possibly be a natural replacement for aspirin. I think one of the things that is not discussed by doctors Is what the baby aspirin does from a leaky gut perspective that could be avoided with something like curcumin. Thank you again for taking the time to make these videos and I wish you health and happiness for you and your family.

This is a very interesting video. I like the fact you actively encourage people to ask their doctors questions. Something many doctors hate, but it's vital to have all the information at hand before you make a decision. And it should be YOUR decision. They say knowledge is power, but power that is unequal is dangerous. I hope this encourages a lot of people to question more and be more proactive in their health choices and care. Quantity and quality of life are vastly different things, Yet it's important to value each and use knowledge, and perspective in regard to your own personal health. I hope you are doing as well as can be expected Dr Gupta. God bless you for thinking of others right now. And God bless your family. Remember be kind to yourself and take care xxx

Thank you Dr. Gupta! You are a brilliant and a very giving person! My internist advised me to take a baby aspirin daily because I have pre-diabetes and a very mild calcium deposit in my heart artery (seen thru heart scan). I also have elevated cholesterol level 286, with high LDL, and am also pre-diabetes AiC was 8, now it's 6.5. I have been eating more vegetables, almost no meat, no sugar and very low carbs. No rice, I now eat bulgur to replace rice which is a struggle because I am Asian! I love rice! I drink organic green tea, hibiscus tea, Jasmin tea, lavender tea, I exercise daily ( jump rope 200 jumps), ditched the sugar and just eating home cooked meals mostly organic, grass fed meat and wild caught fish. I do intermittent fasting too. These seems to help lower my AIC level. I need to do more so that AIC would be at 5 .5 or under.I do have angina which comes on whenever I am under a lot of stress. Should I just take the aspirin as needed instead of daily? I am thinking of taking it only whenever I feel chest anxiety ( angina) attack.
