The Nichols Ride is equal parts short, scenic, brutal, and exhilarating. After a couple of miles of slow rolling through west Los Angeles, the competitive side of the ride kicks off when the light goes green at Hollywood Blvd.
From there riders climb up through the Hollywood Hills on Nichols Canyon Road with a quick and sharp detour on La Cuesta Drive to reach the top of the main climb at Mulholland Drive.
Once up top the terrain is rolling hills with great views out over of the valley. The constant up and down on Mulholland is easily as hard as the main climb with riders split into smaller groups having to take turns facing the wind. The 'finish line' for this part of the ride is just near the crest of the last climb.
After a regroup the ride heads back down to flatter ground on Sepulveda Boulevard.
