I finally have heard someone explain the difference between a jazz lick and a good rhythm&blues lick. I could hear it but couldn't explain it

My ex back in the 80s busted the head off a guitar it had a locking nut so I snipped off the strings an did a gig with it that night. My big hair got me through 👍

I think this is gonna stick! THANKS You are very much appreciated. I couldn't afford lessons when I was a kid and learned to play sort of haphazardly. This opportunity makes a great deal of difference in how I learn. So, I subscribe. It's the least I can do to say THANKS again.

Hi from Toronto, I havent watched in a while but glad I saw this one so important in where im at. You really explain the art of this topic better than I have seen anywhere. Going to work on this way of digesting licks so its less worrying about memorizing and more on internalizing an approach that opens lots of freedom. Thank you.

There is something about jazz rhythm guitar with regard to inversions I am not sure about. Everyone talks about the guitar not playing the root on the 5th or 6th string, either don't play them or do inversions to not muddy up the piano/bass. Ok, I get that, but what if the bass and piano are playing the inversions, lets say an Em7/B. Is the B, the 5th, something we guitarists should not play on the 5th or 6th string because now it is acting as the root or can we still also play Em7 in 2nd inversion if we want to? I don't think I ever heard anyone explain this. Thanks!

Good question: there is no one-size-fits all. It's a matter of context and listening to what's happening in the song and band. I suggest picking up great comping etudes (for instance, Barry Galbraith comping) to see these voicings in action. There not a single rule of thumb of "must do" or "avoid at all cost". If it sounds good, it works :)

Main problem with David Baker's Book : it's not realistic from a rhythm standpoint. That why I never recommand these 3 books about Bebop. Totally misleading for newbies (and uninteresting for others).
