Doctor Who is a British science-fiction television programme broadcast by the BBC since 1963. The programme depicts the adventures of a Time Lord called the Doctor, an extraterrestrial being who appears to be human. The Doctor explores the universe in a time-travelling space ship called the TARDIS. The TARDIS exterior appears as a blue British police box, which was a common sight in Britain in 1963 when the series first aired. With various companions, the Doctor combats foes, works to save civilisations, and helps people in need.
Beginning with William Hartnell, fifteen actors have headlined the series as the Doctor. The transition from one actor to another is written into the plot of the show with the concept of regeneration into a new incarnation, a plot device in which a Time Lord "transforms" into a new body when the current one is too badly harmed to heal normally.
The fourteenth series of the British science fiction television programme Doctor Who is set to premiere on 11 May 2024, and is expected to air through to 22 June. It will be the fifth series led by Russell T Davies as head writer and executive producer and the first since his return to the show, having previously worked on it from 2005 to 2010. This series is set to be the fourteenth to air following the programme's revival in 2005 and will be the fortieth season overall. The fourteenth series was announced with Davies' return to the programme for its 60th anniversary in 2023 and beyond, with Bad Wolf becoming a co-producer for the series. The series is referred to in marketing and promotional material as "Season One" following the production changes and the acquisition of Doctor Who's international broadcasting rights by Disney+.
The series stars Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor, a new incarnation of the Doctor, an alien Time Lord who travels through time and space in the TARDIS, which appears to be a British police box from the outside. The Fifteenth Doctor was introduced in "The Giggle" (2023) through a "bi-generation", in which he split from his predecessor, the Fourteenth Doctor (David Tennant), rather than replacing him. The series also introduces Millie Gibson as the Doctor's newest companion, Ruby Sunday.
The series, which was preceded by a Christmas episode on 25 December 2023, will consist of eight episodes, which have been directed by Julie Anne Robinson, Ben Chessell, Dylan Holmes Williams, and Jamie Donoughue. Alongside Davies, who wrote six of the episodes, the writers include Kate Herron, Briony Redman, and former showrunner and head writer Steven Moffat. Filming began in December 2022 and concluded in July 2023. It was the first series to be produced at Wolf Studios Wales following the move from Roath Lock Studios for the preceding anniversary specials.
Auditions for the role of the Fifteenth Doctor started in December 2021, assisted by casting director Andy Pryor. Davies was interested in casting "new talent" and someone "younger", with most of the actors who auditioned under the age of 30. There was also no limit on gender and background, with auditions held for men, women, and one non-binary actor. Pryor said that when casting the Doctor, "you always want someone unexpected... an actor who contrasts with what's gone before yet still brings those essential qualities that the Doctor has". Ncuti Gatwa was the final candidate to audition for the role. Davies said that the production team "thought [they] had someone and then in he came and stole it", describing it as "the most blazing audition". Executive producer Phil Collinson stated that Gatwa "did things with [the role] that I'd never seen an actor playing Doctor Who do".
On 9 January 2023, the BBC announced that Aneurin Barnard would appear as the mysterious Roger ap Gwilliam, and that Jemma Redgrave, having reprised her role in the previous series would continue to appear as Kate Stewart during the fourteenth series. On 20 January 2023, further casting announcements from the BBC revealed that Anita Dobson and Michelle Greenidge would appear as Ms Flood and Carla Sunday. On 3 April 2023, it was announced that Jinkx Monsoon would play a major antagonistic role in the series, called "Maestro". On 5 May 2023, it was announced that Jonathan Groff would play a key role in the series. On 24 May 2023, the BBC announced that Indira Varma would join the series to play The Duchess. On 7 June 2023, Bonnie Langford was announced to be reprising her role as Mel Bush for the series. On 15 June 2023, Lenny Rush was also announced, to play a "mysterious" character named Morris. Alexander Devrient will reprise his role as Colonel Christopher Ibrahim.

Also she had publicly expressed an interest in the role when it was announced Jodie was going.

I held onto hope during after Ncuti was announced that there would be at least one episode where the Doctor's race was a hindrance, like when Thirteen wasn't believed in the Witchfinders because she was a woman. It would be a small piece of karma for all the times the black companions ended up having to deal with racists throughout their adventures. But RTD has some guts to put that issue at the climax of a futuristic, social-media influencer based episode instead of a historical episode. I tip my hat to you, sir 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 EDIT: Almost done with my rewatch, and WOW there are so many racist microaggressions towards the Doctor. I'm ashamed that I didn't see it for what it was earlier in the episode. I also love Millie's reactions throughout and at the end. For me, the heel turn by the main girl made the episode way better. At about the two-thirds point, I was having trouble rooting for her even though the episode was (until then) clearly structured to make us want her to escape. If characters are too dumb, I have trouble caring about them. (This was an issue I had with "Boom" as well.) So in a way it was a relief when the episode was like, "That's okay. You don't have to root for her anymore."

You missed the racism? I thought the racism was glaringly obvious - right from the start, when EVERY face in Lindy's bubble was white... Ruby didn't get quite the same degree of hostility and rudeness that the Doctor got... and at the end, with the 'contamination' reference, it was hammered home.

I absolutely loved it! I'd actually go as far as to say it's one of my favourite episodes this season. I adore the setting and technology of FineTown and the social commentary in this episode. The moment when Lindy makes the choice to turn on Ricky was amazingly done imo. And yeah, as much as I did miss the Doctor, the scene we did get with him at the end of the episode was literally EVERYTHING. It was perfect in a way that made his absence worth it imo. As far as the season as a whole - I honestly don't mind every episode having a totally different vibe, but I don't really like the over-subversion of the Doctor as a character. Maybe it's just the abundance of Doctor-lite episode, but somehow we're halfway into the season and have yet to see a real hero-moment where the Doctor saves everyone. It's kinda what they do, yet 15 is either totally MIA, having to rely on others, or is scared and running away/hiding. I think it's fine to give the Doctor these kinds of moments from time to time, but when it's so many episodes in a row with a totally new incarnation, it just feels like a bit much.. Especially when it's an era that's supposed to bring in a ton of new viewers. I feel like if I was a new fan of the show, at this point I'd be thinking that the Doctor is pretty useless tbh, and that's just kind of a shame, cause I do feel like Ncuti is doing an amazing job. It's just the combination of scripts and episode order that gives off this impression. Another thing is the Doctor-companion relationship, which I feel could have used more time to develop gradually, and instead has been pushed aside in favour of these experimental stories. This might just be due to the low episode count, but still.. I would have gladly taken a couple of more grounded episodes, especially in the first half of the season, to just get to know Ruby better, and see her and the Doctor getting to know each other and learning to work well as a team. Instead, we just got them being sort of instant BFFs, then had a weird uncalled for time-jump; and most of what we actually know about Ruby, still revolves around her being a mystery, rather than an actual person. Maybe it's just me, but I find that it kinda makes them less believable and less relatable as characters and therefore weakens the actual stories when they're in danger or otherwise emotionally invested.. And I'm sure this must be even more true for new viewers who don't know what the Doctor is usually like with their companions.

I am more convinced than ever that the new series has something to do with being trapped in a “TV” type simulation - Susan Twist is a “reused extra” (she’s a phenomenal actress but tv shows do it a lot), the fourth wall was broken, there’s a twist or unanswered questions most episodes, there’s a different genre every episode, soap legend actresses are being used (Mrs Flood and Grandma Cherry), music in a couple of episodes….

This is my 3rd favorite so far behind Boom and way behind 73 Yards. This was really scathing, disturbing and wonderfully weird at the same time. It was so wild to want her to be saved, but also to feel she doesn't deserve to make it out. In the end she deserves exactly what she's going to get though: Dead because of her own ineptitude at anything. I think her betrayal of Ricky was COMPLETELY in Character, since she's vacuous and selfish to her very core, established from moment one with her. My only tiny gripe is the Doctor's tears. She was not worth them. This time it was a bit much. Ncuti needs to stop making that his go-to look-what-I-can-do on-command acting choice.

After looking into when this episode was filmed december 2022 to January 2023 and how Sex ed was finished filming in February on 2023 so it is nice to see how RTD handled the limited filming time. Definitely got the classism vibe which definitely shows the difference between British and American viewers with how classism is more prominant in the UK than racism whilst the reverse is seen in the US both still exist in both countries but the levels differ significantly. When Ricky said that he is going to save her I knew and said out loud that that was a death flag and he will die, shame he and Gothic Paul had to die but Mr Coopers words at the end of Voyage of the damded still ring true. That scene with the doctor at the end has been my favourite so far in this series that has been my first doctor moment for a long time which I never saw with Jodie.

A can help you out with these. 1) The place has really high security so the TARDIS couldn’t get in. I think the plot of the dot becoming sentient and creating the slugs was way too underdeveloped. I also kinda started to think the doctor and ruby sat down on a screen started to feel a bit cheap. I think it's a brave choice making the 'protagonist' of this episode a racist horrible person because idk how that'll make this episode feel on rewatch. It's not necessarily enjoyable seeing all of that... But I do really respect it a lot and the ending is extremely powerful. I think it's a 7/10. Not convinced from the episode that it's certainly racist I found that any one out side their bubble of people would of been disliked. Watching the behind the scenes I see that they did indeed bury to do this but maybe that's the point we don't always see the intention behind actions because we try to find other reasons. As to the slugs I don't buy that they were created by the dots, I think it's more they just turned a blind eye to them. Why did there homeworld get wiped out so much sooner if it was the young people the dots hated, the homeworld couldn't have been completely covered in people in bubbles. Even September didn't stay in all day like Lundy and the others did.

According to the cast and crew in Unleashed, the ending was meant to suggest they’re racist. I personally didn’t get that at all in the episode. Like you said in the video, it read to me as them just seeing Ruby and the Doctor as outsiders to their society, and they’re so set in their ways that they won’t accept help from outsiders. I did notice that many of the characters had a very blonde aryan look, but I never got a racist vibe from their actions or words.

@F5ss Месяц назад
I rewatched it, and there are a lot of hints you won't get on a first watch. Firstly, they only REALLY have a problem with the doctor, they're all white, the comment about the TARDIS being voodoo (African magic if you didn't know) the woman thinking the doctor was a different guy the second time is because she thinks all black people are the same. The reason the woman is shocked the doctor and ruby are in the same room is because she doesn't get white and black people in the same room, and the whole "he's not as stupid as he looks" is also clearly racist on a rewatch. Thought the twist was sooo clever, and after the reveal I immeadiatly started thinking back going "so that's why she said/did that".

We can all acknowledge that Susan Twist is important this season, yeah? Okay so that aside, this episode didn't grab me at first... UNTIL September was murdered. Pepper Bean is a MONSTER. Like an actual monster, my jaw dropped with how malicious and selfish she is! And it didn't help at ALL how she completed shafted the Doctor's offer to help. Someone said this too, it really did feel like a racist slant, and it didn't feel like that until I realized she followed September's lead in a heartbeat and absolutely refused the Doctor's. To that, I think an important factor to this episode is the Doctor's emotional pain at the end. He tried for nearly his whole life to avoid death and now he's having to relive it once again, not able to save nor escape it. This here might be the turning point of the Doctor's arc, the gravity now setting in.

It could be argued that it was survival of the fittest, no doubt at all. This is just opinion, but her actions were catered to serving herself but son much so that it made her a critical level narcissist, one that cost a life with no remorse. Calling her a monster, it's more so meant that her actions and behavior made her disgusting and disconnected from any human behavior. And it's not just her, it was all of those people snubbing the Doctor's plea to help.

I really think there was missed potential here. Likely hindered by ncuti filming elsewhere. 1. Why the creatures? We see the dot kill someone at the end. If they can kill, why create the slugs. 2. There could have been great character development for Ruby here, that could tie into the twist at the end. She could have got more and more fed up with lindey over the episode. Getting louder and more short tempered. The doctor could have had a moment where he tries to give some perspective of someone who seen the universe (e.g imagine looking at a screen all your life. Etc. trying to encourage sympathy in ruby). Then the end twist would have been so powerful. Ncuti defends them then turns out they wont go near him.

It started out bright on the surface only. If you watch closely, all the cheeriness was fake all along. You get hints they are all self-absorbed and don't care about anyone else beyond basic interactions. This gets more clear when she says it's the best day of her life meeting that guy, and he points out everyone is being eaten alive by monsters. She doesn't care though. It's not just an 'outside the show' tongue-in-cheek thing. She really doesn't care that they died at all. She misses friends for what they can do for her, but she doesn't miss them as people. The whole society is like that. In their bubble, totally fake, with no feelings for others at all. Then they are classist and racist to boot. Who are the real monsters? That is the question. Is it any wonder the dots want to be rid of these truly awful people? We only scratch the surface too. Imagine if we got a closer look at the home world, what those people must have been like. These are the sort of people who would create the weapons systems in Boom.

It also shows the nature of the main female protagonist, as its all about her, no one else matters, and happy to reveal her pathological lying ability to achieve her own objectives and beliefs. But shows if if people are told of a lie long enough, they believe it, even if the person trying to save them is th3 most intelligent person on the planet. Intelligently written, butill everyone understand the story about racism etc it is stating. It was two episodes of the Doctor missing in action, which is disappointing. There is a reason why the dots and monsters are not deleted by the Doctor. 8/10

A Truly amazing episode - this and 73 Yards are best of the season so far in my opinion.

I wonder what would have happened if Ricky September had lived and got to the river. Just because he exposed himself to the outside world more than anyone else. Half of me thinks he would’ve been more logical, but half of me thinks he would’ve just acted like the rest of finetime, seeing himself as above and better than the Doctor. But I do think the episode is trying to go for something like ‘it would have gone better if Lindy hadn’t killed Ricky September’, because the fact that she did this and she was also the one to refuse the help of the Doctor, kinda sets up the narrative that Ricky September was just a really heroic, good person in general. RIP Ricky.
