This along with the fact that the Doctor even tried to justify the last two are really interesting to me tbh Like with Clara, it was directly stated that since her death was a fixed point…she’s gotta go back *eventually* despite being able to go on a few adventures with Me beforehand And with Bill, he basically said “well she’s in heaven now” It’s almost like the Doctor is making excuses as a means to motivate himself and feel less guilty about bringing Donna into this situation….a sort of “even if something bad happens, I can fix things based on technicality, I’ve done it before, why wouldn’t I be able to now”

@StagTwo

@@bessieburnet9816 I think there was a throwaway line explaining that the 14th doctor would live on and settle down as a form of therapy, and when he eventually regenerates he will become 15 on the UNIT tower. This would certainly explain why Ncuti's doctor acts a bit wiser and healed.
@WiGgYof09
@WiGgYof09 8 месяцев назад
Yeah. 15 called it "rehab in reverse". We don't fully know how it works, but 14 taking time to recover allowed 15 to start fresh. It was the only way to get back to having a fun Doctor without all the trauma the previous writers caused. And of all the Doctors that need to learn how to forgive himself, Tennant's is number 1 on the list.

@JoshSweetvale 8 месяцев назад
@@WiGgYof094 and 5 actually did something similar. We don't quite know why or how, but in the episode 4 died, 5's... ghost? Spectre? Was already walking around and stalking the Doctor. "And Herr Kaptain Jack Harkness..." The Toymaker paused. As much as he had tried, no matter how hard he looked, across every wandering thread of time that comprised the history of the Time Lord sat below him, the Captain was there. Gunned down by Daleks, he was still there, sucked into The Time Vortex, he was still there, electrocuted, evaporated, eviscerated by rotating metal balls, every single time he saw the captain again. The toymaker quickly scowled, before dropping the doll over the small stage. "And ze Kaptain who so much vanted to die... You couldn't even give him vot he really vanted..." He cut the head from the doll, and it rolled onto the floor, and out of sight. "Jack learnt to live with his immortality. He has family, friends..." came The Doctor's reply, defensive, but defiant. But the Toymaker knew exactly what the Doctor was thinking, as it loomed deep in his subconscious. The curse, not a blessing, of immortality, as curse not dissimilar from The Doctor's very own. He theatrically threw on his mockingly unconvincing facial expression, and shouted. "Well, that's alright then!"

"Iz zat vat he told you, Herr Doktor?" The Toymaker tilted his head with a mocking grin. "Or did you zimply assume as much, because it scares you, to zink of what happens, in the moments you're not there to play ze hero, and zomebody else has to pay ze price." He wonders which doll he ought to use for that example. The two scientists, who he could not save? The lover, who died in his arms? The dear, innocent grandson, sacrificed for the greater good, and the daughter, who will never forgive him for pushing the button? It almost disgusted him how little the Doctor knew of the lives of the companions, who left his side alive. So much suffering, and that simply what lay in the Captain's immediate past. If the Doctor truly knew what the people, who loved him, kept from him to spare his feelings, both of his hearts might just break.

The worst part is... he _had_ them. But The Doctor refused to help when he created the problem in the first place, and destroyed it all. Children of Earth? That's Ten's fault. Ten _specifically_ and no other Doctor. Because of overthrowing Harriet and saving Caecilius. Caecilius's final descendant was Frobisher. Remember how things went with the Time Lord Victorious? That was the same thing going on with Frobisher. If The Doctor hadn't overthrown Harriet Jones and hadn't saved Caecilius, Ianto would be alive. No "golden age" would have considered giving into the 456, especially not Harriet. And Frobisher was the Torchwood govt liaison. If Ten hadn't done those things, Torchwood wouldn't have been betrayed, they'd have taken point with full backing, and things would have gone so much differently.

@TheDiplomat27
@TheDiplomat27 8 месяцев назад
I would not characterize it that way. It's not like the Doctor gets them killed on purpose. Also their deaths were never part of any game at their expense like it is with the Toymaker. And not all companions die. Some companions died but that is because of the inherent risk of traveling with the Doctor. When you are fighting enemies like the Daleks, Cybermen, weeping Angels etc... there will be huge danger. Lastly, the Toymaker is presenting a very biased and misleading view. Amy Pond chose to be taken by the Weeping Angels because Rory had already been taken and she could not bear to live without him. The Doctor actually begged her not to do it but she did it anyway, and he was heart broken when the Weeping Angel took her. Clara died because of her own hubris. She thought she could "play Doctor" and cheat the system and when faced with the inevitable, she chose to go out and accept her fate. The Doctor hated it but could not stop it. So he did the next best thing to take her out a second before she died and give her a "life" in that last second. Bill died by a Cybermen but it was not the Doctor's fault. He did not know the Cybermen were there and did not know about the time dilation. The Toymaker is conveniently leaving out some details.

@TheDiplomat27 8 месяцев назад
@@WilliamTheBot I strongly disagree. The companions come with the Doctor of their own free will. And he does not bring them along to die. He brings them along for companionship because he likes them. They actually become his closest friends in the whole universe. He actually goes out of his way to protect them and keep them safe. It's just sometimes it does not work out because the Doctor is fallible. So no, they are not expendable lifeforms. And there have been times when the Doctor deliberately travelled alone so as not to endanger his companions. But what is the Doctor supposed to do, never make any friends and always travel alone for the rest of eternity? That would not be fair. At the end of the day, companions are also responsible for their actions. Sometimes the companions take risks AGAINST the advice of the Doctor. The Doctor tries to protect them and they disobey. That is on them, not on the Doctor.

People are forgetting that most companions choose to travel with the doctor and tell him they know the risks but want to be heroes. Clara saw the doctors past and knew what was at risk. Her arrogance is what got her in the end. Amy always went back to the doctor even after he left in season 6 to spare her and Rory. Amy made the choice to be touched by the angel to be with Rory. And Bill, she bugged a professor at a school until she discovered the truth and went out of her way not to let her memory be wiped. Sure, she warned him about going on a mission with Missy, but it’s not as if the companions have no agency. The audience ought to know that even if the Toymaker ignores it.

While this is true, it doesn't mean the Doctor is free of blame. He knows what he's doing, taking these regular people across time and space, knowing they'll always want to come along. He shows them the stars, then expects them to go back to their lives on Earth. At best, it's gross negligence to take untrained, regular people info great danger. At worst, he's actively using them, because the alternative is to develop a conscience of his own. I guess 13 should just be glad that none of her companions got murdered by aliens, or kidnapped by evil statues. They were the lucky ones.

I agree with Amy and Clara being ‘ it his fault’. But Bill was 100% the doctors fault. She explicitly warned him she thought it was a bad idea to take missy out already, she said quite clearly she was worried for her safety and made the doctor promise to not let missy get her killed. He did. He failed.

In my opinion this is THE most important scene in new who. It PERFECTLY summed up the concept that when tragedy strikes or when someone dies, the doctor never stops, never looks back, never mourns. He just moves on. And in a weird kind of twist, the toymaker was like the parent scolding their child because what they did was bad, with this the toymaker is scolding the doctor for simply giving up on all of them or failing to protect them or constantly putting them in harms way. That was the whole point of this 3 parter, to show the doctor that he NEEDS to stop, stop and enjoy life slow. Look back on life while remembering the good bits only. And finally getting the chance to mourn all of his losses

I've made a gif of "Well, that's alright then!" for use as a reply on social media. "I'm not racist, some of my best friends are black!" "WELL, THAT'S ALRIGHT THEN!" "Yes, [political party currently in power] are bad, but it would be worse if [opposition party] got in" "WELL, THAT'S ALRIGHT THEN!"

Even if the Toymaker's criticisms of the Doctor's reaction to (or rather, repression and excusing of) his past companions' fates has merit, it doesn't take away how extraordinarily petty throwing their deaths, and making a mockery of them, in his face is. For an almighty being above the mortal coil, it's juvenile and sick and shows how he doesn't need to destroy countless universes to be evil; just these immature displays of cruelty can affirm this. Kind of like with Pennywise.

Pennywise from IT? That one has a good reason: IT is an entity of true cosmic horror - to glance upon it brings madness. It is a destroyer of worlds, a primal force that spans galaxies and times beyond human comprehension. And that is a problem, for an entity that feeds on fear: It's too overwhelming for humans to actually be afraid of in the way it needs. So it has to come down to human-comprehensible scale, adopt petty guises like the killer clown in order to feed. Something that leaves the humans terrified, rather then burning their minds into babbling mush. That is IT's weakness - in diminishing itself into something able to interact with humans, it also makes itself vulnerable.

I like this, basically telling off the doctor as he gives answers that he thinks 'makes it alright ', when he knows it doesn't. I also like how he loses the accent when saying the line

I love the fact that the Toymaker’s “WELL, THAT’S ALL RIGHT, THEN!” gradually raises in pitch until he’s basically screaming it at the Doctor.
