As a former re-modeler. You never take things for granted you always measure several times to make sure things fit. No guessing or taking things for granted. 🤞
I think the island is the way to go vs the u shape. This way Alecia can have her dish washer to the left of the sink if that counter/cabinet goes to the door like it is. Or you could have your sink and dish washer in the island and then just have counter top by the kitchen window, so no worries about the window and sink not being centered……. Just my thoughts….. and I would also have the island as a breakfast seating on the living room side for the kids. Can’t wait to see what you decide.
I had to replace my dishwasher a few months ago. All different connections on new dishwashers compared to 10 years ago Easy enough to make a platform to raise your dishwasher the required height. The old one had rubber trim flaps on the sides the new one just small gaps You will have to secure the top though. Something unsightly better than tipping And the original dishwasher, the 2nd and new all sat a little proud compared to the countertop and I looked at other homes. It’s typical I Velcroed a piece of trim to the bottom of mine to hide the underneath You can Velcro trim on the sides if the gaps bother you. To the cabinets or dishwasher or both if it rattles on one side
Just a FYI! If you already have your appliances you really want to use them. Your warranty starts when you purchase appliance. So I would hook the other appliances up also just to get your warranty covered incase you have problems.
Oh the joys of homeownership 😊. The Okie Engineering in me says you need a shim maybe 2x4 wedged in the top of that dishwasher. I grew up in a farm house where everything inside was temporary. My stepdad had to many projects in motion so nothing ever got finished. You on the other hand will drive this to completion because it will drive you crazy 😂
Cut you a 2x6 to extend the underside of the cabinet out to secure the tabs to prevent the tipping. Won’t be pretty but will keep the dishwasher stable especially when you start loading it with dishes. Also will fill in the gap at the top which will help with sound deadening.
The house we bought & remodeled had the dishwasher like yours. & I didn’t like it. I also didn’t like the peninsula & we did away with it too. I now have the dishwasher beside the sink where the island connected to the cabinets and a very large island with seating and lots of cabinets & drawers in the island. I have a cabinet dedicated to cookie sheets on their side which I love. Another thing I love is having swivel bar stools instead of fixed seats that have to be scooted in & out. I also have pullout shelved in all bottom cabinets. I didn’t know how much I’d love them.
You give us hope that an end to these renovations can be found! We've been a bit busy, and my indecisiveness doesn't help the speed of progress either!
If you’re set on the island which I think would suit your needs better. Put the dishwasher next to the sink in the current corner of the peninsula and the sink area. Either shorten the island if you want to keep the current foot print of the kitchen. Or move it out a little like Kevin mentioned. Really depends on the island.
Kevin, wedge a piece of wood above the dishwasher, and then screw up into it. That will keep it in place & secure. And if you have it overhang to where it would be if the dishwasher was completely installed in the cabinet, then it will keep the buttons hidden from those little hands!
You can put the dishwasher on the right or left of the sink.I think I would put a cover over the back porch it will keep your furniture from getting wet.
Don’t do a corner cabinet. The triangle type. They are a pain!! Even if it has a lazy susan in it. They are the worst!!! The best money you can spend is get a real kitchen designer. Go to a kitchen and bath stand alone store. You won’t regret it. They have the best ideas. 😊
Deciding on an island and placing it further out towards the door that will no longer be there, you have solved your diswasher problem. Keep the sink counter extended to the current length (to the front door) and you now have room for proper placement of the dishwasher next to the sink. I love the idea of an island (seconding as entertainment area) pushed out further. Instead of a flat island, have one that is extended up on the seating side. This will give you eating and entertaining while also providing separate kitchen workspace and cabinetry on the kitchen side. You can place the garbage cabinet either next to the dishwasher or in the island. If you or your contractor can figure this out, outlets can be placed in the extended part of the island. This will give you a more productive workspace on the island (like for your airfryer) without those sitting there being in your way. If I have confused the mess out of you with my description, let me know, I have pics of mine. I did some of this to mine and you wouldn't believe how much it helped with my small kitchen and entertaining. I have a large fam. Never fewer than 5 grandkids at my house at once so I needed to maximize what little room I had. I was even able to have cabinets on both sides for extra storage. I hope this helps.
that would be fine for me!!! i guess i'm easy to please, xD! our dishwasher is from the 1970's (came with the house and has lasted 20 years for us!!), and it has been crooked in the opening from day one. everyone we know has been through at least two dishwashers in the time that we have had our antique one. i love my crooked dishwasher!!!
Since making an island you have to get new countertops so I like the island idea. You wanted to move the sink so here’s your chance..maybe dishwasher will fit next to sink..My friend had your layout and it was a bear to always go around just to get to the sink and out to the entertainment area.. also consider a L shaped island. Best of luck..
I would put more windows where the sink is, expand that area and put the dishwasher by the sink and by putting in a wall of windows there, centering it isn't as important. You could put the dishwasher on the left of the sink as you face it if you don't do the continuous bar and do the island, set the island out some.
Glad you are upgrading your house! What about the cabinets what’s a time line on that? Will there be more house videos agin. You do some good work. Thank you!
I would move the dishwasher to the left of the original location and make original dishwasher location a cabinet with double trash cans that would also solve having to reroute water and drain lines.
Bars used a hinged bar section to open to walk thru, closed its a bar. Also, i feel like the bar could be longer. The microwave shelve should slide to clean. Haha, full of advice i am.
It looks like your drain hose is to low. I believe it should be higher to assist in the drainage and make like a second p-trap to help keep smell out of the dishwasher.
The drain hose has an air gap loop on the back of the dishwasher to be a p trap and under the sink the drain hose is higher then the connection point on sink!
I think you will regret getting rid of the door to the garage because you will have to go all the way thru the laundry room to bring anything into the house like groceries or kids when thier asleep , I would add a door going to the laundry room first before removing the existing door and see how you like it
It would be the same amount of doors we have to walk through to get in the house now...one! Most of our storage is in the laundry room so it is actually more convenient that we can walk into the laundry from the house without a door as opposed to having to go through two doors to get food and supplies from that room!
Don't do a corner cabinet . not practical even with lazy Susan. Have had both and got rid of them. Could not reach the back of it over the counter, and lazy Susan you can't see the second shelf unless you are 7 feet tall
I agree. It's only good if one has time to constantly dust them. I personally don't have the the time to constantly clean them. I almost placed open shelving in mine but came to my senses. lol. Ended up placing cabinets with frosted glass doors. It looked great.
Take a couple of 1x2s and attach underneath from front to back and then attach the top of the dishwasher to them to secure it so it doesn’t tip forward.
