WELLER 12 - What is ALL The Fuss About? 

I got 1 of those for 40 bucks, took me almost 2 years to find one, IMO anything on the second market atm is insanely priced.

Would like to see Weller full proof vs Old Elk cask strength wheat.

Great video. This was my go to Bourbon for many years. You used to be able to find it on the shelf for $35. Haven’t seen one in the wild for years. I just opened my last bottle. I love it. It’s what I prefer in my Bourbon - easy to drink with vanilla, caramel, fruit and oak. I wouldn’t pay $200, but I’d probably pay more then I should.

Great review, thanks for posting it. A bottle of Weller Special Reserve just appeared on the shelf of my store. After I put my eyeballs back in my head, I rushed it to the cashier and paid the $30 it was priced at for it. It is really, really good. But I’m not going to overpay for this product, so I guess I’m confined to being lucky and seeing a bottle of it every once in a blue moon..

There was a time I had 6 bottles of W12 in the bar and even more OWA107. The best thing then and now is to do a 60/40 blend 107/12. Unfortunately I have only 1 W12 left and am now afraid to open as it can be used in a trade for something else. Oh well, back to just 107 which still works.

I made a Poor Man's Pappy blend w 107 and then added a bit of Weller Full Proof. Excellent result that solves Matt's problem w the 12 on it's own.

Been drinking bourbon for a long time and Weller 12 used to be my daily pour. Was always on the shelf and $25 for a 750ml. That being said I have never seen a bottle in a store at retail since they changed the bottle type.

I'm starting to think these scores might not be scientific.

Weller 12 is amazing!!! I would rather have a case of A107 but I love the 12. Now if I could only find the Full proof. Thanks for the review Matty!!!

Boom. I'm hoping to win one of those today actually!!! Great review by the way. It sounds like it drinks very similar to the Antique 107 in flavor. I finally opened one of mine last night and love it. So silky and the flavors are very good.

Try mixing Weller 12 & Knob Creek 15 - 50/50. You keep the Weller's amazing nose, but add the complexity and long finish to the palate

I feel this way with a lot of BT stuff - you find it, get super excited, get home and get all nervous and pumped up to finally pour it, and then you try it, and then you say, "huh." And after a few days of thinking you suck at appreciating bourbon, you realize, yeah, these are pretty dang good bottles at MSRP and I wouldn't pass them up, but good grief they are NOT worth that crazy secondary hype.

That's a very very high score considering all the things you found lacking. I would never even think about questioning your judgement, of course... ;)

Coming here because I just purchased a bottle of Weller 12 for 40 bucks and I’m in Maryland so 99% of the time liquor stores around me are charging resale price for anything Buffalo trace. I’m feeling good

Being able to just walk into a decent liquor store and pick up a bottle of Special, 12yr, or 107 (my favorite) was so great back in the day.

I pour W12 for my buddies that are intrigued by Tater Berbz but aren't ready for the high proofers like GTS and WFP. They love it!

I really enjoy weller 12 and was one of my favorites when I first started drinking bourbon. It thought me to enjoy bourbon and down the bourbon rabbit hole I went. I agree not worth $200. It's funny how you said it should be 100 proof and a lot of people prefer the antique at 107 proof. great honest review. cheers

I was in Ocean City MD last week and saw a Weller 12 for $899. I laughed and then he said he would take $499 cash only and I left empty handed. I also sans a bottle of Very Old Barton,a 1.75 for $99.99. I had just picked one up for $25.

I really like the special reserve Weller. An excellent sipper and I got it locally for $30. It is a little less complex, but really good nonetheless. Good review!

Made the poor mans Pappy with it and it brings all the flavors to the yard! Try it, it’s def the sun of its parts!

I didn’t appreciate this until I had it in a flight with special reserve, OWA, and full proof. This one and the best flavor of the 4 I thought, although the extra proof on full proof was really nice. Obviously WLW at cask strength would be too similar so they won’t do it, but I’d love weller 12 at full proof too

I will request that you rate OWA 107? It's a very good pour with the proof helping it. Now SR doesn't have anything going for it, IMO it's a 3.1 at best. I'm stunned, Matt at this score so the hunt begins at retail only!

It's a great bottle at the retail price point. I was able to find 2 Weller 12 Year's with the help of a friend for $32 each, and it's very nice for that price. I would not pay more than maybe $50 for it. I snagged a Weller Full Proof also recently for the first time, and at the $40 price I paid, it's VERY nice, and I would pay MAYBE $65 for it max. I just cannot get behind paying the 5-6x markup on anything when there are lovely bottles at this high prices that are actually worth it.

I have a 1L of Weller 12 in my cabinet that I bought couple yrs ago, still haven't opened it yet.

Yeah, it's alright and has the name Weller and the number 12. You could replace the years with "stars" and charge ten more dollars retail.

Catching up on older episodes. I have seen this for $300 on the secondary market. I have 5 Weller SP, Weller Antique 107, Weller Full Proof, Stagg 18. & 19, 2 Blanton’s, 4 Eagle Rare, 3 EH Taylor Single Barrel, 4 EH Taylor Small Batch and 16 Buffalo Trace. I am retiring at the end of 2024 and would love to find a Weller 12 Year to add to the shelves, if I can find at a reasonable price. Doubt that I would find Weller Single Barrel or Weller CYPB. 🥃

Just got a bottle of Weller 12 about three weeks ago. I paid $50.00 for it. Haven’t opened it yet. I figure it’s probably similar to special reserve.

You can taste the flavors because it’s not up there in proof. It’s one of those beginner bourbons to me because you can really taste bourbon flavors. I loved it for a long time! Then I needed the proof you speak of☺️

Never paid over $60 for mine. I liked it a lot before I got into higher proofs. Now I like 107 more.

I consider myself fortunate to have found a few bottles between $75 and $100 recently and I’d pay those prices again if given a chance. I’m not a proof hound (yet) so I find this super enjoyable. I’ve tried a few different BTAC pours recently and honestly, they’re too proofy for me (hold the gasps).

The only place that I have seen Weller 12 in person in Georgia is a place about 25 mins from my house. They have had 6 bottles on the shelf for at least a year maybe longer. They are trying to get 299.99 EACH!!!! That place didn't even pay that much for the whole case. There is no way in hell I would pay that much over retail for something I have never had. I have had the special reserve (which I don't care for), the 107 (which is ok but not worth the hassle trying to get) and the Full proof (which I enjoy very much but would still not pay the 350 secondary prices in Georgia). Was lucky that the 2 bottles of Full proof I have one was 60 and the other was 80.

Some years are better than others., though it is always complex. When it is good, it is GREAT. Kills 107 and competes with FP. IMO worth $120-$150.

With the exception of special reserve It’s my least favorite in the line up. To me It taste like fruity oak water. With that said the nose is great. I recently cracked a CYPB and that destroyed it. It was actually very good.

Never had this 12yr. I did just have an 1.5oz pour of the Weller SiB for $15. Yes it was good, really nice nose. Sweet and "smooth" but thin with a short finish. Honestly not much better than the Special Reserve, and definitely not worth a fraction of secondary.

Just acquired my first bottle of W12. Had similar thoughts. Great bourbon that wants to be fantastic. I now mix it 1/3 W12 with 2/3rds OWA to get a 100 proof poor man's pappy. Tastes incredibly different and better than either as a stand alone.

I haven’t even watched the video yet, but I grabbed one for $42 and I feel buyers remorse after one glass.

I used to see this in some shops for $300. Lately I’ve been seeing it for $200.. the markups like that should be illegal

I saw a bottle of WFP for $500, insane in my opinion and this was at a retail store. I can’t stand The secondary pricing on BT, I say that but I do like me some BT products so idk. Lol

I paid well over $200 for my Weller 12 but...I only had to walk a 1/4 mile to get it and it was a milestone celebration for turning 65 and surviving cancer for a year among other celebrations. It's good, sweet, and smooth but I'm not looking for another one. If one falls into my lap for a decent price I'll buy it but there are too many I love for $80 or less...some under $30...so it's just not worth it for me. Agree with the proof statement too.

I have a few bottles myself. Its a good wheated bourbon at $35/40 MSRP. But not at $200. Ive been offered $300/400 for a bottle by fan boy allocated collectors but i wont sell. I rather share with my friends. I agree if this was 50 or 55 percent. It would be better.

Weller 12 is over $500 here in Louisiana

Got to try one of these recently and just straight up did not like. Put it to my nose and my first thought was "dog pee". Not a great way to start. Took a sip and the smell was the palate. Couldnt do it.

Not worth $200. When I worked at a liquor store and was able to obtain everything at msrp I discovered $50 is my ceiling. Too many great bottles $50 and under. Of course I break that for bottles to review on my channel. Cheers my friend!

Here in California I’ve only come across a Weller product once. I found some special reserve at a BevMo’s for $28. Not even close to being worth any secondary pricing that it may get

It always amazes me how these bottle that are going for $200+ on the 2ndary market have twist off caps. I guess it's all about what's inside that matters.

Dang. I’ve got several bottles of this and the 107 and they are both low down on my crack open and drink list but I suspect it’s definitely overrated at those secondary prices.

Although it's not a wheated, I much prefer Knob Creek 12 yr at $60 and 100 proof.

At the liquor store I work at, I pay $25 out the door. It's crazy to me that people pay insane amounts of money for bourbon, but whatever.

I’ve had one bottle of Weller 12 and wouldn’t buy it ever again. I think you really nailed it with your description Matt - it has a lot of potential, but they just watered it down too much. Like everyone else is saying, you can’t find it anywhere on the shelves out west for less than $150. My request is, don’t refer to “the secondary market” as where these obscene prices are being found - its the PRIMARY market (the retailers) that is gouging us consumers.

Also.. please review poor mans pappy.. it solves your problem.. and it’s friggen delicious

One of my favorites and well worth the $45 MSRP. Certainly not worth $200. I urge my fellow bourbon drinks to refuse pay the inflated scalper prices advertised on the internet or we will continue to get ripped off by these pirates!

I got a bottle today for $40 (and a lot of loyalty points) and I felt that it was good but would never pay more than $40 for it. I felt the same about the proof? Why water a 12 y/o bourbon down to 90 proof at 100 to 105 this would be an great pour. I like Weller 107 better than the 12.

The nose on weller 12 is so fkin nice i can smell it all day but on palate its so flat . Nose on weller 107 is alright but on palate its the most delicious on weller line . As i want whiskey which pleases my palate weller 107 is winner against 12yr weller .

If you can only compare this with Weller Antique.

This is an easy sipper. Not my favorite. It is good. A barrel strength could be awesome!

Give me Antique 107 any day if you can get it under $100.

Weller 12 has alot of great flavors going on compared to the A107, but the A107 flavors are alot stronger, obviosly due to the proof. Thats why the A107 Weller is still the champ at that price point. I have always felt that the 12 was the special reserve without all the new shinyness. 12 is still a fantastic bourbon, but just falling short of greatness.

I love a good honest review on something like W12. The reputation is so big and the reality is very average. And the poor mans Pappy conversation.... You cant make a Chevy Corvette out of Chevy Camaro and Chevy Bolt scraps. If you want Pappy, just buy it and be disappointed too.

I tried a couple pours from a bar and it motivated me enough to actually go on Caskers and order a bottle ($308 with taxes and shipping), so yeah - I overpaid big time, but I plan to stretch that bottle out over at least 10 months!

It’s $150 to $200 here in WA. I won’t get it unless I have Jeff Bezos, fly to outer space, money. Okay not that much money but you get the point.

I've only ever seen one of these and it was $120. I hesitated for a couple weeks but finally pulled the trigger and bought it, only so that I could mix it with my Weller Antique 107 and make Poor Man's Pappy. It was worth it to me, just to get it and blend, but I wouldn't buy another Weller 12 unless I found it for around $60.

Which is why the OWA and FP are better. 12 is just reserve aged longer.

But how were the enchiladas?

To me the fuss is all about the hunt with these Weller 12s to get them at retail. For the people who don't like Weller 12 they probably paid $200 USD for it.

if you can get it for $40. Had a pour in Bardstown last month after years of hunting for it. It's good but not worth all the hype.Not wort hunting for or the overinflated prices in the secondary market. If i stumble on one at cost I'll grab it but not worth chasing or agree with you not worth anything over $50-$60
