Welsh Highland Railway - Driver's Eye View - Part 2 - Rhyd Ddu to Caernarfon

With the uphill climb behind us now, our Garrett locomotive eases its train away from Rhyd Ddu for the largely downhill run to Caernarfon. Soon after resuming our journey we round the first bend to an amazing vista stretching to Lly Cwellym reservoir and beyond. This is wild wales, with mountains all around, the odd farm building and dry stone walls to keep the cattle and sheep from straying. Our train looks small in this vast landscape as we descend to Snowdon Ranger, a small halt serving one of several hiking trails leading up Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales at 1,085 m (3,560 ft). With Llyn Cwellyn reservoir to our left and high mountains to our right, we are surrounded by awe inspiring scenery in every direction. We coast past Plas y Nant (Halt) without stopping as there is no one leaving or joining here, we cross the Afon Gwyrfai (River) on one of the bow sting bridges used to carry the original line. The countryside for the next few miles is influenced and shaped by the winding course of the Afon Gwyrfai, first passing the disused station at Betws Garmon, before stopping a Waunfawr station and passing loop. Our train gets underway again, staying close to the Afon Gwyrfai as far as Tryfan Junction where a line once branched off to serve Bryngwyn Slat Quarry, now a footpath. Our journey continues through typical Welsh farmland to Dinas (Halt) where the original line terminated, at the one time station on the now closed standard gauge line to Afon Wen. There is a substantial railway presence here, with the motive power depot, carriage sheds, coaling stage and sidings. For the run into Caernarfon the track bed of the closed standard gauge line is shared by both the WHR and a cycle track. Our train terminates just short of the castle at a temporary structure soon to be replaced by an eye catching new station with the facilities needed to cater for the increasing passenger numbers to this popular Welsh tourist destination.
This video was first posted 19th August 2017. I replaced it on 18th June 2020 when a spelling mistake in the opening title was pointed out, a bit embarrassing, especially as it had gone unnoticed for so long. Original Video - • OLD VERSION - Welsh Hi...
One question that has come up many times in the comments for both the Welsh Highland and Ffestiniog Railways is "Why doesn't the train leave the tracks when it passes through a switch set for the opposite track" - it is not east to explain, but I'll try -
The switches at either end on the passing loop are set to allow trains to pass without the need for railway personnel to set them, in this case the train will always take the right hand track in the direction of travel, when the train reaches the end of the loop the switch appears to be set incorrectly. The switch blades are held in place by a spring mechanism that allows them to be pushed over by the weight of a train passing through them. Once the train is clear they are automatically set to allow a train in the opposite direction to take the right hand track, thus making the passing loop automatic. The system works well so long as a train never reverses before clearing the switch as that will de-rail the train. The first time this system is seen in operation it looks wrong, but it is common practice on many lines where speed is low and costs need to be kept to a minimum.

At 13:38 up on the right side of the track on that small rocky outcrop, there was a Spigot Mortar emplacement that covered a part of the road and this part of the track and I think a bit of the "Castell Cidiwm" roadblock that was on the road during the war (Plas Isa), at 15:26 we have the Plas y Nant Halt, when the WHR people built this part of the track, they moved the Spigot Mortar emplacement from it's original position located in the middle of the track at 15:40 to the halt somewhere (when I had a look during the winter this year I couldn't find it). At 15:47 as they cross the bridge, the second Spigot Mortar emplacement is still there up to the left, covered in heavy foliage during the summer months, a few seconds after that, just out of shot, is the Plas y Nant No.1 Pillbox which had 1 Lewis Gun, 4 riflemen and 2 runners. At 16:36 just out of shot and up to the left of the track we have the Plas y Nant No.2 Pillbox which had 2 Browning Automatic Rifles, 3 Riflemen and 1 runner. This position was to be defended by a section of the Waunfawr Home Guard ('C' Company 3rd Caernarvonshire Battalion) and No.5 (Rhyd Ddu, Nantlle & Talsarn) Platoon, 'B' Company 3rd Caernarvonshire Battalion. They had their Platoon Headquarters at Pen y Gaer. In the event of an invasion and enemy troops moving their way from Caernarfon to Betws Garmon, this force would hold the defile, but if it was just a light force, the Waunfawr section and the Rhyd Ddu section (Rhyd Ddu section commanded by Corporal John Limerick) would hold the defensive positions. The defences of Plas y Nant included 4 Flame Fougasse mines camouflaged into the roadside, 1 Flame Thrower, several bomber pits and infantry posts, 2 Pillboxes, 3 Spigot Mortar emplacements (1942 onwards), barbed wire entanglements, a roadblock and some Anti-Tank mines. Fascinating local history along this rout from Rhyd Ddu to Caernarfon 😃

I really appreciate the time and effort you have put into sharing this wartime history with us, it's not something I know much about, next time I'll pay more attention to what is left of the defences. Thanks again, I'm sure a number of viewers will find your comment interesting. Cheers. Tim.

@@Timsvideochannel1 Not a problem Tim. I really hope it was of interest to you and to others? I first came across partial information on one of the Welsh Highland Railway newsletters, so all credit to them for mentioning the history in the first place and preserving it. I have done the rest of the in-depth research. Question to you and others is, when was the railway scrapped during the war? Because it was still about in 1940-41 going off a few photos, but by 1942 they put 2 Spigot Mortar emplacements in the middle of the railway line at Aberglaslyn and here at Plas y Nant (I've commented before on one of your videos on Aberglaslyn). Something I haven't quite understood. In order to place these emplacements the track must have been scrapped. Didn't it closed down sometime during the war due to funding, maintenance and fuel costs? And was revived and restored way after the war ended?

@@TheWelshHomeGuardsmanHi, there is some information on Wikipedia, although the best I can find is on the festrail site, this link gives some detail about the railway in WW1 under the "A Short Operating Life" banner - www.festrail.co.uk/welsh-highland-railway-history/#! This article gives some information - www.whr.co.uk/heritage/features/whrAtWar/ I found this at - www.festipedia.org.uk/wiki/The_Dismantling_of_the_Welsh_Highland_Railway Although the Ffestiniog Railway lease did not officially end until 31st December 1942, and arrangements with the L.M.S. at Dinas were due to end on 30th June 1943, in March 1941 the Ministry of Transport stated that the railway had a history of losses, and that there was no prospect of it re-opening. Consequently, the Ministry of Supply, faced with acute wartime shortages, requisitioned the materials for £1280, the money going to the Official Receiver. The track was removed under a Requisition Order issued on 13th March 1941 under Defence Regulations 1939, which authorised the British Iron and Steel Corporation (Scrap) Ltd. of London to removed articles specified in the order.

@@Timsvideochannel1 I'm currently putting a video together discussing Plas y Nant's defences. I'll be crediting you for the above comment and information. Thanks for giving context about the removal of the track. The 29mm Spigot Mortar 'Blacker Bombard' was issued out to the Caernarvonshire Home Guard in late 1941 into 1942, the concrete emplacements being built on site in mid 1942. Very interesting information. Diolch!

Hi Neil, it took three years before someone told me about the glaring spelling mistake I'd made in the title, Welsh names can be difficult to get your tongue around and even harder to spell, I'll pay more attention in future, correcting mistakes in the video description is easy, it's a different matter when they occur in the video itself.

What a unique heritage railway, this is on my want-to-see-when-I-visit-Wales list. BTW would it be possible to render your output video in 4K, even if the source material isn't? I ask this because RU-vid adds a lot of compression to 1080p videos nowadays, and movies with a lot of busy trackside details like these have started to look pretty muddy.
@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 4 года назад
If you do visit, I'm sure you will enjoy the experience. It is interesting that you mention 4K, these videos are taken in 1080p to avoid the camera overheating and cutting out, although I use 4K to render them in my software. I upload them at 1080p because I don't want to people to believe they are something that they are not. If I watch them via a smart TV, the picture is reasonably good, but if I watch on my computer the result is disappointing. The results from RU-vid can be frustrating because the original footage uploaded to RU-vid is good. I will upload a test video to see how much difference it makes. I have also noticed that the longer a video is on RU-vid to better the picture becomes, a new video is often disappointing for its first week or so.

I thought the title said the West Highland Railway. I was wondering why the tracks in the thumbnail looks like a narrow gauge, and then i realized it's actually Welsh not West. Plus the name Railway usually means a preserved line, whereas a line under national rail wouldn't (most of the time) have that name. Especially true for the West Highland Line.

Hi, because this question comes up a lot in comments, I wrote an explanation in the video description. I have copied and pasted it below - One question that has come up many times in the comments for both the Welsh Highland and Ffestiniog Railways is "Why doesn't the train leave the tracks when it passes through a switch set for the opposite track" - it is not east to explain, but I'll try - The switches at either end on the passing loop are set to allow trains to pass without the need for railway personnel to set them, in this case the train will always take the right hand track in the direction of travel, when the train reaches the end of the loop the switch appears to be set incorrectly.

@@Timsvideochannel1 Thankyou, I see, that's quite interesting.🙂 Thing was, I noticed that there was a footwalk all along the line between those two locations, as well as every bridge being built in order to span both the track and the footwalk, thus it looked a track had been removed at some point.
