The song fit in well in 1977, and probably many of us did feel it (though maybe even MORE by 2012 and 2022). Back in 1968, it had come second - to Spain (it's entry GENUINELY being called "La La La") - in the 1968 Eurovision Contest. Later "Congratulations" was a number 1 hit in 8 countries - including in Spain!!! But, to be honest, the sight of the Massed Bands pouring out to this genuinely happy tune (with an audience of aficionados that wanted to be there) is possibly among the spectacular things I have ever seen in my life ... at least so far! The original five syllables were going to be "I think I love you", which was a level of uncertainty not welcome, so it was changed to "Congratulations" - like many songs written about earthly love between people, it might have a context in God's love for human beings - which would fit in because Sir Cliff had limited experience in the former, but a great deal in the latter being a confirmed Christian for most of his life.
