I finally tried Wild Hearts, and well, I was definitely surprised. All I heard about the game was how bad it was, and there is a bit more too it than that!

Wild Hearts was absolutely fantastic when the mechanics worked... the problem was that they just stopped working entirely FAR too often. From getting knocked into a wall in a cave and standing on the ceiling, to your fusion karakuri failing because the game decided it was going to stack 4 high, to so so so many more infuriating intricacies. It had a lot of good ideas and executed a lot of things very well, but it was lacking a certain degree of polish that caused it to feel like an early access game even in its most recent patch.
@samtheashen
@samtheashen 5 месяцев назад
That’s fair. Again with a dedicated developer it would’ve been able to be polished to a point where it would be enjoyable for most people. I haven’t had many problems on console so far luckily but a huge portion of the player base is on PC so it’s totally ruined for them because of optimization or bugs or just general lack of polish.

I wish I would’ve dug deeper sooner, I love monster hunter and was really excited when this was announced and when it released all I saw was negativity about it everywhere, which I should’ve tried for myself but 70$ is a big risk. I thought Wild Hearts was pretty solid, I think the REAL problem was that you needed an EA account to play multiplayer on it, you didn't need a Capcom account to to play Monster Hunter, Wild Hearts shouldn't have needed one either, not that it matters anymore since EA stopped supporting the game.

Can't play WH yet due to old PC, but I somehow found myself enjoying Toukiden recently (from same developers, WH surely a spiritual successor to them in some ways) even though I initially didn't like/understand them enough when I was focusing on Monster Hunter (and the thing with games in this "hunting action" genre - one shall not expect everything to be just like a MH, but instead you gotta appreciate them for their own stuff - be that God Eater, Soul Sacrifice or something else; and if you really feel the need for MH again, its also different/varied across "generations" as well; in the end, even though genre is "repetitive" and what not, there is plenty of variety when you think about details haha). Thanks for video, and have a nice time!
@samtheashen
@samtheashen 5 месяцев назад
I appreciate you taking the time to comment, you have some great points. I remember seeing Toukiden a few times and almost trying it. Would you recommend it to this day? Or is it to clunky? I played god eater, and I wasn’t playing it with monster hunter as the expectation so I actually enjoyed it. Great point to enjoy the games for what they are, not all will be up to MH standards but they also bring in more variety which is definitely better all around I think.
@kurisuchiinathecrocodile333
@kurisuchiinathecrocodile333 5 месяцев назад
@@samtheashen the one I was playing is Kiwami (expanded version of 1st game), so I'll talk about it. I would not call it "clunky" though it's originally was a 2013 psp/vita crossplatform game. It plays smooth and comfortable (perhaps a bit too much, haha). Main difference coming from MH (which bothered me at first) is that it doesn't focus that much on "preparations" or "hunting/simulation" things (that was especially strong in early MH), also it's not similar category difficulty/challenge-wise (even though there are pretty strong bosses closer to endgame/postgame, and there are options to make challenge for yourself via various means, the main flow of game is more chill/relaxful, unlike MH where each new boss can take many failed runs before you succeed, let alone Dark Souls). Then, what's Toukiden about, you would ask? Lemme continue (sorry for big reply, haha)... Best thing about Toukiden is that it gives you various thingies to "toy around", and how it's combined with overall experienced being streamlined (as i said, it plays super smooth). The main loop is simple and classic - you have hub where you can change equipment, buffs etc. and then choose missions. There are ofc various weapons to choose - long sword, bow, gauntlets, spear etc. They are perhaps not as in-depth as recent MH games (tbh I felt ovewhelmed by Rise, considering I played MHFU before it), but they are unique/balanced enough among themselves, and it takes time/dedication to master the usage of this or that weapon. Also they are pretty fun to use! I like how some of them give you ability to perform aerial combat - most notably chain & sickle (kusarigama) with which you can imitate Attack on Titan battles and dual knives (can climb enemies Dragon's Dogma style a bit). You have lock-on mechanics so you can lock-on and lock-off freely (remember I said game being not clunky) for you advantage, and in case with some weapons like spear your lock-on point is not the whole enemy, but specicif part of it (which helos). Some other weapon types have parry or block options, and some are kinda complicated with stuff to keep in mind (i think rifle is kinda reaching MH/GE complexity, dunno). Oh, and gauntlets are just fun because you can punch demons Hokuto no Ken style, it just feels satisfying when you succeed. The main "catch" of Toukiden combat is that bosses have, like, two healthbars. 1st healthbar represents physical body, you erase it when destroying limbs (body parts), after that you gain aceess to damaging spiritual body and can finally reduce 2nd healthbar. After you got rid of body part(s), you need to "purify" them - by that you collect materials that would be needed for weapon/armor upgrades/creation, and also it would prevent enemy from regenerating limb back to place. Also after certain attacks you can get enemy into "raged" mode where it does more crazy attacks but in return the whole body is spiritual so you can go all-attack (be careful though lol). This system can get a bit tedious at times, but there are extra things that helps to get it more varied. I mentioned "weapon classes" above, but there are also "mitama" cards. You collect them (represented as historical warriors from past) and equip. Firstly, they provide you "battle styles" that add another layer on top of weapon choice. You are getting 4 skills to use during combat - first one is always health recovery, three others differ from chosen style. Some give you attack buffs, others boost speed and stamina, another one would give you teleport or stealth ability, there is also style that helps you purify monster limbs as fast as possible. But what's more, each card gives passive boosts as well, and they play important role too. You can have up to 4 (out of 12 from progression tree) boosts enabled from such card, and you can equip three of them for weapon. Many of them are traditional atk/def buffs, but some are more curious like vampire health from attack, the ones affecting your weapon special, or specific ailment defense. And you can freely swap around these cards... in the end, game gives nice options to "build" your character, toying around weapon choice (also including elemental damage if needed), battle style choice, and all those passive boosts - when it all comes together, it's pretty fun and gives you enough stuff to experiment. In the end, even if you stick to selected few weapons, you still can vary the way you play with this things, at times reaching some crazy stuff you'd not think about. When I initially played the game, I was not paying attention much to it and was just doing missions and sticking to one weapon - that bored me, as a result. But some time later when I revisited game I started diving more deeply with what I can do - and it ended up more fun and amusing. Another thing that caught my attention and helped me to get hooked on game was story. In Toukiden, story is very much fleshed out so the narrative is strong. Even though as portable title it was pretty... laconic in the way how it's done (mostly dialogues with characters and plenty of mails to read, though there is a douzen or smth of epic cutscenes), but for me it was immersive enough. The first half of games perhaps felt a bit ordinary/cliche - but I would not say it negatively, its the opposite way maybe because you can recognize yourself or friends/family in characters and it helps with growing attacked to chars. The second part (which came with expansion) is more lively with story, more dynamic and there is intrigue, thats where I got super excited for it. Though perhaps for some players it would be "eh, just a usual anime". But for me, story and characters clicked enough to enjoy it much. Also there is big amount of jokes to laugh at, and also plenty of heartwarming moments. Story mode lasts for 13 chapters (though 3 chapters are fillers as they were post-game grind content), and there is also a cooperative mode with 17 chapters as well. They are chosen separately. You cant coop the story, but you can coop the cooperative mode. Also you can play everything with NPC ai bots (both campaign and coop). They are very good, and can carry you through the most of game kinda, but you always have option to choose how many you want to take with you, and most story missions allow you to go solo if you really want as well. As i said above, game overall does not feel as hardcore as MH or smth, especially if you play with npc. In fact, the challenge comes more from being efficient. So its not about dying from monsters, but more about how good you play so your time spent is quicker. Then again there are ways to self-impose challenges if you want, e.g. playing solo or doing extra missions that unlock closer to end of game. Post-game enemies can be pretty tough, and there is also a boss rush mode where you get additional cards and materials. But for MH veteran there is not much stuff to compare if you expect certain things. Overall, its a game that initally bored me but at some point I gave it 2nd chance and ended up loving it. It has cool ideas and fun to play, but you need to push yourself and game a bit to get most of it. Also personally I liked story and music, so that's that. Oh, and there are tenko (fox animals you give food and take on missions so they help you with gathering etc) which are super cute. Now, there is Toukiden 2 - a sequel that I havent played yet. Can't comment much of it for now, but most people say its better than first game (and some like it more than WH). I know TK2 has openworld (did it before MHW), has grapple hook hand (so each weapon can have aerial combat), reworked mechanics with ability cards and how you upgrade/forge weapons, added mechanic to completely destroy enemy limb so it wont regrown etc. etc. etc. So perhaps give that one a try instead, if you want. Well, hope you'll find this interesting and story for huge wall of text :) best wishes!

@@kurisuchiinathecrocodile333 Wow, that is a huge reply! It obviously was a huge effort on your part so seriously thank you for taking the time to write it all out. I honestly couldn't find a better in depth look at Toukiden, awesome job. It sounds super interesting, I love Dragon's Dogma and the ability to climb on the monsters so that aspect seems like an awesome feature. The fox buddy is also sweet, I love a good animal companion in any game. The weapon system sounds pretty interesting, seems like some weapon options I havent seen in MH or WH, the hook blade seems really fun. If I try it I would probably go to TK2 first, the grappling hook is definitely enticing. The card system is a cool unique mechanic too, you mentioned they are based on historical warriors which is a really cool way to connect to the real world. You mentioned the story was solid although a bit typical anime first half which I definitely don't mind at all, I always have a better time with a game if I can get into the story. I never found myself particularly attached to any MHW character or plot line, so it would be a nice change. @@samtheashen glad to hear. Though, still keep in mind that those games had this or that limitations, perhaps smth was still a bit rough etc. etc. I really hope that WIld Hearts isn't last attempt in genre from Koei Tecmo. Anyway though, I'm getting impression that Rise of Ronin is their most important upcoming title, which success might be defining. To bad EA doesn't give ip to another publisher to keep it up aww well
@samtheashen

That’s a great point, the game would be waaaaay better off in another publishers hands. EA doomed the game because of impatience and greed.

Has EA already abandoned this game?

From what I’ve heard and seen, yeah unfortunately it’s abandoned. Which is definitely a shame because it has plenty of potential and if they stuck around with it it might even earn them a little credibility, I’ll keep dreaming I guess 😓

What I wish is they took this games character creator and stuck it into monsterhunter games instead . Then monster hunter would be super perfect ! Still monster hunter is better than this game by far but the character creation in this game is just something I wish I could see in a monster hunter game like REALLY bad !

"I never even gave it a chance just because of all the negative things said about it" when we as gamers, stop dictating what we play by the opinions of others, then we may all collectively find more interesting games. All the monster hunter purists have to shoot down any competition that does it differently enough and it shows anytime there is a flashy release. They did it with dauntless and they are doing it again with wild hearts.

Alright that is a fair criticism but there is also a giant Ape Rock and an Ice Wolf which are pretty cool. They space out the variety a bit too much

no body in my circle has any problem with it looks like fortnite and monhun but everyone has problem because this game run like ass on pc just like day 1 mhw pc release but unlike mhw the dev didnt update it and EA stop the funding so yeah the game cant even redeem itself

That sounds about right, performance would be a deal breaker. Good comparison with MH, if EA would’ve supported Wild hearts like Capcom did MH, I’m sure it would’ve been an entirely different end result.

That’s pretty interesting, I assumed it’d be similar across the new consoles, guess not! So I guess ps5 is the way to go, still be nice If they optimized it for every one

Definitely a shame they didn’t support the game. A ton of wasted potential, they could’ve easily put more time and money in to fix things and add new monsters and areas stuff like that.

Had they released a functioning game, i was going to buy this. I was really hyped, but after seeing all the issues people were having, i decided i wasn't going to support it

Fair choice for sure, I would say the right choice with the price still at 60-70$. Are you on PC or console?

Hmm I think it's by far biggest crime is the terrible pc optimization, other than that, I think it changed enough mechanics and designs to not be a total ripoff at least
