At West Coast Karma, Mel and Gabby strive to create unique clothing and accessories adorned with hand-drawn, nature-inspired designs. The focus is on sourcing local and ethically made clothing to support the community and build the local economy. All clothing is hand-printed at the Wachiay Friendship Centre and Black Cat Studios, two outstanding locally run businesses.
West Coast Karma originated as an evening drawing ritual for Mel. The art served as a means to calm her mind and unwind from the demanding tasks of being a stay-at-home mom to three children born within 12 months. Over time, it evolved into a business that fully supports their family of five. Each design is thoughtfully created using an ""old school"" pen and paper. Most of Mel's designs take shape at her kitchen table or are inspired by walks in the forest or time spent at the beach. Last year, the online business celebrated a new milestone, the opening of a storefront in downtown Courtenay, BC.
