In the end Maddon wins, because it's already the 9th inning so getting tossed doesn't mean much and he gave Aroldis Chapman plenty of time to warm up by yelling at Joe West.
You're probably right. More times than not when a baseball manager gets ejected they planned to for some reason or another before they even leave the dugout
Maybe so, but he's also the "king" of the umpires and no one (and I mean NO ONE) in baseball dares question him - not the commissioner, not the league presidents, not the chief of personnel of major league baseball...no one.
Joe West may be one of the longest tenured umpires in MLB history . . . now entering 41st season . . . he may because of his long service to the game and his invention of the West Vest equipment for umpires, get into Cooperstown
T Duell He truly is. He should be Demoted to Single A Ball in Arkansas in the middle of July so his fat ass will be humbled and he will drop the attitude.
If only the idiot understood baseball. He's not enforcing rules he's out there attempting to be center of attention so many times that it's just a disgrace to the game.
unkown a no he wasn't, he was being an idiot. I mean technical he is allowed to break up the meeting it's his choice. but it was an idiotic time to do it. I think the game was just under 2 hours so it's not like fans had been there long, seriously let them have their meeting and move on. loved how the sports analysts ripped him a new one
Opinions vary on Cowboy Joe West. In the same season that a lot of players voted him one of the 5 worst umps in the league, a different player poll rating the best had him in the top five. The main complaint about West is not his calls or consistency, it's about his short hook and the manner in which he treats players and situations. He's extremely old school and believes in absolutes when it comes to rules. The rules say you can't argue balls and strikes, then you can't argue balls and strikes or he runs you with a quick trigger. There was a day when nearly all the umpires were like Cowboy Joe, far more matter of fact and less likely to take any guff. Men willing when necessary to go nose to nose with Managers like Earl Weaver, Lou Piniella and Tommy Lasorda. Men like Doug Harvey, Harry Wendlesteadt, Ken Kaiser, John Shulock, Ron Luciano, Nestor Chylak, Jerry Neudecker, Marty Springstead and the late John McSherry. Still, each and every one of those men had their detractors. It's the nature of the game. Technically, he is rated one of the better umpires in the game. How else can you explain that, over the past 10 years, he has been assigned to work 3 World Series, 2 League Championship Series, 5 Division Championship Series, 2 Wild Card Games, 1 All Star Game and the World Baseball Championship. Seniority alone doesn't get you that kind of work. Cowboy Joe West is 65 years old. He will likely hang up his chest protector in the near future. But as someone as old school as he is (I saw my first professional game in 1963), I can appreciate him for what he is and not expect him to be anything else.
I don't see why people are so mad about this. He simple told the players to break it up because players aren't allowed to have meeting with each other and he simply told Maddon that he'll charge him with a visit if he's telling his players to meet with each other which is what the rule is and then Maddon got pissed and after arguing is when he got tossed. I don't see a problem with anything Joe West did. He is a terrible umpire tho. Haha
it's because it's in the spirit of the game. Also I believe Joe was changing pitchers anyway so they can do a meeting. Either way the game was just a bit over 2 hours if I remember and he had no reason to hurry up the game. The guy had a no hitter going and blew it in the 9th it's not uncommon for players to meet. Sadly there was a huge moment going in the game and West didn't like that all the attention wasn't on him and made the game all about him.
"If you knew baseball" says the guy that clearly doesn't know baseball. The mound visit rule says that if an umpire feels the players are being told to visit the mound by the manager, the umpire has the right to charge the manager with a visit. It seems to me that's what the umpire was telling him when he decided to argue about it. At that point just say okay and make your change. Why argue and get kicked out when it's in the rule book?? Also he could've rewarded the next batter with a "ball" if he wanted to penalize the pitcher for delay of game
Rhinosaur, One of the responsibilities of the umpire-in-chief is to keep the game moving. Players are not permitted to have meetings on the mound whenever they wish. It's called game management. You may dislike Joe West but he was completely right to break up the meeting.
Alan Hess Oh please. The guy is an idiot. The game was just around the 2 hour mark. It's not like it was a long game and it's not like they were meeting every inning. They were actually discussing changing pitchers. West isn't right he's an idiot who can't understand that the fans didn't come to see him. This isn't the first time he's pulled a stunt like this.
Kartracer6, I'm not a big fan of Joe West either. I'm just saying that it is normal for an umpire to keep the game moving and the Cubs were trying to buy time. Why in the world would infielders be discussing a pitching change anyway? Joe was right in breaking up the meeting. No umpire would allow a meeting on the mound for the purpose of giving the substitute pitcher more time to warm up.
I didn't see this game.............Instead of going out and yelling at Joe West, have Hendricks pitch to ONE more batter while Chapman is getting warmed up. Maybe Hendricks finishes the game with the win AND a complete game.
I wonder if they're actually arguing about the game, or if this kind of routine is typical, and Maddon's shouting like "We ate at Chili's last night! BIG MISTAKE!", and Joe West is like "WTF man! I told you about this rib place in town! I'm gonna toss you now, but remember, all you can eat ribs every Tuesday! Smell my breath! Don't those ribs smell good?!"
Here is my analysis of what happened: Umpires are trying to crack down on managers who walk to the mound in ways that can hamper the speed of the game. They want to get that game going as fast as possible. Now they are placing warnings, and in some cases, ejections, on managers who... 1. Walk very slowly towards the mound too much or too frequently in too short a period of time. 2. Walk very slowly towards the mound and go past the 15-second rule to display the hand signal for the relief pitcher to come in. 3. Signals the players for a conference for purposes not usually related to the pitcher at all, such as making a conference to the mound involving the infielders and the pitcher, to discuss non-pitcher defensive strategy. Especially if these conferences are held more than one or two times in very short succession. All of these actions are called stalling, which is a new prohibition especially in Major League Baseball. A manager who is caught stalling will be given a warning not to do it again. A manager who dissents at the umpire after being told not to stall again will be ejected. Also.... A manager who continues this offense shall also be automatically ejected from the game. But there is an exception - the manager who is ejected from the game can make the final pitching change for the relief pitcher before he has to go to the showers to sit out the rest of the game - if he is already ejected.
As an umpire, I don't understand why, after an ejection, umps continue to argue with the ejected manager or player. If it were me, I'd either ignore him or walk away.
Maddon's a great manager. You know its the 9th inning they're up 5-1 he just wants to buy time. Its not like soccer where you miss the next game too when you get a red card. That's obviously not the only reason why he's so great but it's just one minuscule reason.
Because he's actually really good. One of the better umpires n the game. You just don't like the fact that he's not a door mat for people to walk all over...right?
But can you really call it a chin when it's half the size of his face? (^_~) Maybe he's secretly a hamster and has giant cheek pouches to store baseballs.
I remember that game too Hendricks had a no hitter into the 9th until they hit that homer. Also had no one warming up so good job by Joe to argue and give Chappy more time to get ready
Jake Wilkin after being in the playoffs for so long they're gonna get no draft Picks no money and most of all they're players are going to grow old and move on
i think they can do it but i dont understand just like mets last yr in ws why does lad get 3 straight home games i mean arent the best teams or the better team suppose 2 get home field advantage
I mean, c'mon...in general you don't fuck with an umpire, but especially JOE WEST???? Maddon, like EVERY player and manager/coach in the major leagues already know that you can't even look at Joe West funny, let alone fuck with him or you're asking for it. Nobody messes with Big Daddy Joe! In becoming a major league umpire, West set two records that still stand to this day. First, he was the youngest person ever to become a major league umpire AND he was promoted to the majors in the least amount of time, about 18 months from the time he umpired his first Rookie A League game in the minors to when he was called up to the majors. No matter what you think of him, that's impressive to be calling Rookie ball and within a few months you're umpiring double A and then triple A a few months later, then up to the majors a few months after that. He had to be doing something right.
OBR 5.10(b): The manager shall immediately notify the umpire-in- chief of any substitution and shall state to the umpire-in-chief the substitute’s place in the batting order. OBR 5.10(l)(3): The manager or coach is prohibited from making a second visit to the mound while the same batter is at bat. Rule 5.10(l) Comment: Any attempt to evade or circumvent this rule by the manager or coach going to the catcher or an infielder and then that player going to the mound to confer with the pitcher shall constitute a trip to the mound.
god dammit we need jomboy on that one, really good lip reading all around and he could make a banger of a breakdown for this ejection. maybe even CloseCallSports for a why the ejection happen. and look at this, a comment with positive things to say for both Jomboy Media and CloseCallSports. Jim and Linds might team up one day.
Typical Joe West....he misses half his calls and the instant someone looks at him wrong he throws them out of the game. All these umpires "protesting" verbal abuse from players need to get over it, because they are the reason the players get mad. Joe West, Angel Hernandez, and CB Bucknor all should have lost their jobs a long long time ago.
Joe West is the worst...and MLB umps are a joke...and the worst officiating in Pro Sports. They need a complete overhaul and new mindset on how to officiate.
The pitcher is fine, plus there should have already been someone warming up. This is professional baseball after all. No excuse there to stall. And i don't even like Joe West.
no, he's governing the game (oh my goodness, he's doing his job!) by letting Maddon know that sending players to the mound is 1 visit, and coming out after that is not allowed or would be an ejection. by rule. but you already know that.
I did know that. Given the circumstances, however, West should have allowed it. But as I said, West had to insert himself into the game to boost his ego and feel powerful for 30 seconds.
@@alexchavez777 Then atleast let him send his players to the mound. He didnt even allow that much or for Joe to come out. He wanted the to just to start right back up. Joe West being Joe West.
Joe zone was horrible and he had an ego, but he knew every letter of the rulebook, there was no one I trusted more on the baselines (albeit not behind the plate)
I love what Montero is saying to himself here: 1:22-1:40 "please don't fight guys, please don't. It makes me feel bad. It hurts me to see you two acting up like this"
Joe West is one of the worst umpires in the history of baseball... Why? Because he would like to see more playing and less ball scratching, spitting, staring and all those other time wasting methods employed by modern baseball teams these days? 10 20 minutes of actual ACTION in a 4 hour game is getting a bit old. Somebody tell me this: How is it that as players get ever bigger, faster and stronger the game keeps getting slower slowwweer and SLOOWWWWEEER?
He's an idiot because they are allowed to do a mound meeting and there was a big moment that died and the players wanted to Pat the player on the back, get everyone recollected, and do a pitching change. 2 min isn't going to kill your ADD to badly. They've already drastically shortened games because of people's short attention spans now a day.
What if it’s all an act and Joe West ejected Maddon to give Chapman more time? Maybe he respected Maddon not warming up a guy when his starter has a no hitter and a 4-run lead going. Baseball etiquette?
