West Oakland grocery store's closure leaves void, concerns of food desert

At West Oakland's Community Foods Market, customers are filling their baskets for the last time. The store was the only full-size grocery store in the neighborhood for the last 40 years. Despite opening three years ago, it's closing for good on Sunday.

@@Me97202 That's not true. I use to work with the local law enforcement. They would prosecute after a dollar amount. Due to lack of funding. It would go from $500 to $1500 to $2000 til they prosecute, so because of budget cuts. Now they won't even step in regardless of amount. That's government funding. That's your local mayor going you know what. We don't need that much law enforcement or local courts stopping that. Politicians: What? The local stores leaving and now there's less businesses to tax, cause of crime? How did that happen while reading the news on my yacht.

How can you have a functional grocery store in Oakland? While the brothers go over the bride to loot in SF, rob people, break-in cars. You have so many jobs openings out there. None of the brothers are willing to work, instead, most of them have criminal records. I can't see, how this grocery store is able to make money.

Wow. Who are you referring to as "brothers"? Ive been through alot growing up in Oakland. I was a former teacher amd currently an electrician(union) working in my city. Please don't generalize a specific group of people. There are bad influences in every "ethnicities". Please do your research on the cause/effects of systematic oppression . Its not an excuse, more of an explanation . I have no room for hate towards anyone so dont take this personal. LIVE GOOD👌🏾

5 short blocks North there is a Pack & Save Mega-store, it was always cheaper.... 7 blocks down the road is a full providing Latin Grocery store that is cheaper then both of these.

A "food desert" pffft. Sales were less said the CEO. People were not shopping there. Im glad the market wasn't shutting down because of violence. But flat out West Oakland didnt support its local market. Shortage of workers he even said. The giant retailers will continue to control the market.

I don't even know where this place is exactly at. I remember they did offer an investment opportunity but no other advertising. Theft is always a problem not just in West Oakland in that industry. That Amazon store is Seattle is the new model though.

There is a huge Super Target nearby in Emeryville. My sister goes there and never goes to this neighborhood store. Mainly because she needs to pick up a lot more than food every time she goes shopping. That's where Target and Walmart rule.

I have known Braum for quite a few years. L watched him struggle to open a grocery store in West Oakland years before he landed at Community Foods. I have and am still living right down the street on Myrtle. Witnessed the effect of the closure of Safeway (where Auto Zone is now). It was devastating and our Community was totally ignored for 40 years. Our so called politicians starting with our don't give a damn Mayor she could have stepped in and supported Community Foods with necessary Resources needed. GENTRIFICATION played a huge part in the closing of this most needed facility.

Yes indeed. GENTRIFICATION! That's what you get when you try to transform Downtown Oakland to Uptown. No one thought about the population who lived here before they arrived. Money doesn't change a city it only aggravates criminal behavior because some can't afford to thrive with the overpriced rentals and the oppression of the original residents vs the transplants. Oakland was nothing like it is now. It was a pleasure to walk at night and to have others looking out for you. A divided city cannot stand and flourish. It's sad. And to think at one time you couldn't get anyone from SF to come to Oakland without straight out fear. 😂
