West Siberian Laika is a breed of hunting dog and a breed of spitz type. Russian publications indicate that the term West Siberian Laika loosely applied to hunting dogs originating with the Mansi and Khanty people in Ural and West Siberia, but there were no standards or registrations of WSL as such until 1930. Then WWll disrupted it for a while, but systematic breeding with registrations resumed after the war ended, in 1946. This was the time the breed began taking modern shape. Before that hunters only knew of Mansi Laika and Khanty Laika. In early 1960 many hunters in Ural still preferred the term Mansi Laika, when speaking of West Siberian Laika.[1] In Russian language, the term Laika originated from the word layat that means to bark. The word Laika simply means barker. Any hunting Laika is a bark pointer (pointing at animal of interest by barking and staying with the animal[2] ). It is a versatile dog depending on use and environment, but in certain parts of the country they have become more specialized.

"Laika" (Лайка) can be very rougly translated as a "Barker", the first part of the breed name "лай" stands for "bark" in Russian. I knew an old man whom his children gave a laika dog as a gift. Called Timofei (Tim if to be short). He was exceptionally friendly, loved to interact with everybody, never bited and growled at other dogs in the village where he was living with that old man. But the most noteable thing about this dog was that he was bound by the rope and put in the garden outside as a watch dog, because old man basically didn't care and didn't need him. Timofey was very active and he always escaped the rope and ran into the forests. The terrain around our Tver region village is really swampy and overgrown. And Tim could run away for 2-3 days and feel absolutely ok about himself. He seemed to provide for himself, and always looked healthy, unwounded and full when he returned. I knew this beautiful and friendly, smart, but untrained dog for about six years. When on seventh year in summer I moved to my village for summer vacation, I was told that he ran away once again some months ago and never returned since. If you are going to own a laika dog, you must be a truly long walk lover, or even better - hunting must be part of your life. Cannot imagine worse fate for a hunting dog full of energy than being a homestay and decorative.

Just a cute way to call them barking dogs or yappers.

Aww, thank you for telling us this story about Timofei. I’m sorry that his owner didn’t care for him properly, but it sounds like he was loved by the village.

Well, I got my first dog ever thanks to this video, and it was a WSL. He's a 7 months pup now and we go hunting almost daily, we've already killed few grouses and pheasants, he finds them and barks , keeping them still for me to finish it up with a shotgun. Such a talented pup, I hope he likes to hunt moose too when he grows up a little bit. We've had a few problems for sure, sometimes he is reluctant to leave my side in the woods and sometimes he doesn't want to come home with me. But I think those are just teenage issues. He stays in the house, doesn't bark or destroy stuff at all and loves people. He isn't aggressive against other dogs but is bit of a little too zealous and playful and very interested in females, teenage problems too I suppose and minor problems for me, because he's a hunting dog afterall. As long as he loves hunting as much as I do, he will have a good life with me.

I have a wsl where I live in Alaska. Amazing dogs unlike anything I've seen before. Extremely independent while also being attached at your hip at the same time if that makes any sense. He has to be in the same room as me but rarely, if ever, will "snuggle". Extremely emotional dog, picks up on all your cues. Definitely has a prey drive that doesn't stop, but they can easily be trained to go after a specific animal and ignore others. These are the type of dogs that actually look like they have thoughts going on in their head. Extremely smart. Mine is super friendly to people and dogs in general. But they are by nature dominate dogs so be careful around other intact males because a Laika won't back down. In my opinion if you have the space and time( lots of time they NEED something to do, a bored Laika is about to cause trouble) there isn't a better dog breed .

I own a West Siberian Laika... And i will say this, If you cannot provide this dog with a full outdoor lifestyle, living outside, property to run around on, trees to stare into, things to hunt, then do NOT pursue buying this breed of dog. The yuppie city lifestyle will make this dog MISERABLE including yourself. Without the life he needs, he'll become a destructive piece of hell. They are damn near wild animals compared to your typical "dogs". These are not your regular breed of dog. They are very emotional, intelligent, very skilled hunters. They will be food aggressive. They are raised to be that way. You will not be able to man handle your dog like you do your pitbull or lab. These dogs grow up FAST like wild animals. From puppies to game in a matter of weeks naturally.. If allowed to, these dogs will den up underground like a coyote or wolf. Mine, is literally the smartest dog i have ever owned. pet wise, If it didn't grow up with him, it's game. Neighbor cats will die. other dogs will get attacked if they wander into your yard (his territory). all people are barked at. NOTHING gets by him! BEST watch dog EVER. There is no other way around it. For my lifestyle, he's a great dog. If you squirrel hunt and live in the country and know how to be sweet and treat your dog with love and not the Boot and F bombs, then these dogs will HUNT. But they need a soft up bringing. Very emotional dogs. I cannot stress that enough.

@Gurin81
@Gurin81 5 лет назад
@@nicoleinman5563 I am not sure, I have WSL and I have to admit that they extremely intelligent dogs but also very independent. They are never aggressive to humans but (mine is almost too friendly also to other dogs) they work on their own. This breed does not react to the commends like other dogs for example german shepherd. It's like my dog almost decides if it is profitable to do something or not and if not she will do what she wants.

I don't know who you are talking too but nobody gets to "man handle" pitbulls. Fastest way to lose that breed is physical violence. Unless you want a scared, distrusting, hyper aggressive, and pissed off dog don't "man handle" you're pitbull.

My dad had a male Laika, as he was living as a child/teenager in Siberia (around 45 years go). The dog was very family-friendly. My grandfather used the Laika to find his children in the Taiga (Wild Forest in Siberia), the dog was excellent for that. The dog once attacked a chicken from their yard (they raised all their livestock themselves, without it they would starve...in supermarkets there were maybe sometimes bread, butter or something...). The grandfather beat the shit out of the dog for that and as my dad told me, the Laika never attacked anything ever again. Not livestock, not wildlife. So, it completely stopped being a hunter. The dog was protective of the children, when they took him into the Taiga. I don´t know any encounters with big game (in the Taiga there were bears f.e.), but he was protective against strangers (not people from the village). Which unfortunately cost his life at some point. He was shot from a russian guy (a hunter I suppose), who was walking in the Taiga too. As far as I know, the Laika didn´t go into full blown attack, just barking & coming to close. (In the past dogs were never on leash when being on a walk, well nobody had a leash for theirs dogs...they were only on a chain when being in the yard). Shortly after the death, my dad´s family got another Laika, which didn´t live long either. It ate something bad (not sure what, maybe it had a disease & it only showed similar symptoms of being poisoned...I don´t know) and the grandfather shot it. The color of the first Laika was like a wolf, with a full mask. The tail wasn´t curly as in this video. In the village there were a lot of Laikas, I think every family had one.

I think my dog might be a Russo-European Laika, he looks a lot like the breed but the rescue place said husky but he does not look like one. He definitely a spitz/laika breed character wise. Ours has a curled fluffy tail straight thick black and white coat, pointed ears and muzzle. He has a high prey drive and is full of energy.
@TheGrumbliestPuppy
@TheGrumbliestPuppy 3 года назад
Probably not. The thing is, a ton of land races and spitz type breeds look very similar, especially when mixed (which most rescue dogs are). This breed of dog is so rare and expensive that it's super unlikely that one would end up in a shelter.

I have a laika cattle dog cross, accidental litter. She looks like a laika, murderer of any small game that crosses her path, very territorial and doesn’t like strangers. Excellent watch dog and although she’s never bitten anyone it wouldn’t surprise me. Dominant personality and will fight with any dog that happens to come in the yard. Extremely sweet and submissive with me and the kids. People where I am, south Arkansas, have used them for squirrel and they hunt them off the road while they drive. They just drive down the road and wait for the dog to bark a locate. She’s an awesome dog, weighs about 30#.

Yes and no. Maybe. The thing with a wsl is once they find a game animal it is hard to call them off of it. I've had a few people tell me that back in the day if you could call your Laika off a animal, it was considered a bad dog. But that was with the Russians that depended on the dogs for food and fur everyday.

I run mine on a Dogtra pathfinder E Collar, which allows me to view her location on my phone with satellite map. If she starts crossing a road or going into a neighbors yard (very rare since she typically stays in the woods) I can use my phone to beep (tone) her to return. If she persists (very rarely will she ever keep going once beeped to return) I can then give a small voltage warning shock....very small. You can also use this system to make a invisible fence using GPS markers.

I think I said "heavy handed" not "handsy," what I mean by that is it's best not to physically correct a Laika as they have a "handler soft" personality and will quickly build a negative association with you if you're too aggressive with them.

More jealous of where he lives look at the views on his dog walks. All his dogs look fit. But no match for the Pug.

Pugs would kill any bear in seconds. Very underrated hunting breed.

Riannon Sonsa There's cave paintings of cavemen using Pugs to hunt Brontosaurus. Pug is ultimate hunting dog.

This dog is also a moose and bear hunter, not a small game.

Я у меня была собака этой породы, её звали Кыыча! Она у нас прожила 18 лет, и её убили другие охотники по ошибке!

Haha I also have a wsl, and agree 💯 best dogs ever. Unfortunately here in Alaska the use of dogs on big game animals is illegal. But he sure does enjoy bird hunting and treeing squirrel.

Seems alot different than the two ones ive been hunting with. Maybe u are full of BS or half BS. Anyway, they learn fast. Can track mink, Pine marten by the trees. Raccoon dog, (Finland) she snapped some necks. Brought a brown bear within 30 meters of me and my dad, she was fearless. Later that day she sniffed my sisters 4w old kid. Beautiful breed! Hoping that someone wont ruin the breed. Something wrong here, some observations definately true!
