That is the staple hotdog in NC too. Your chili and slaw recipes look good, I will try making them. I used to eat the Bright Leaf Hotdogs at hotdog stands in NC, and can now order them shipped to me, so will be trying that too! WV and NC have a great dog in common!
I am 52 years old and I left West Virginia when I was 16 when we went to New Mexico after my Grandparents retired there. My Beautiful mother went into a Dairy Queen in New Mexico and ordered her hot dog with chili and slaw and the young girl at the register had no idea what my mom was talking about when she said slaw. Thank God that I grew up in Wild Wonderful West Virginia.....the church ladies used to have hot dog sales on Saturdays and it was always homemade chili slaw and onions and they steamed their hot dog buns.......i have never had a better hot dog than I have in WV
That sounds like my dads story. He was born in in West Virginia and moved to New Mexico when he was a teenager with my grand parents and aunts and uncles. My grandpa was a miner who moved his family to New Mexico to work the uranium mines. My dad always had slaw on his chili dogs so I developed a preference for them.
Seeing the weenies grilling and the big bowl of close slaw reminded me of my momma. She was an angel from Southern WV. These hot dogs was a stable in our home, especially during the summer holidays. And then she’d make strawberry shortcake with the sponge cake cups. Miss those bad boys lol
I grew up in Fayette County (Landisburg) WV. I stop at King Tut in Beckley every time I go thru WV. I always get the chili slaw dog and the BBQ with slaw sandwich. Delicious!!
I have used your recipe and it is a hit! Love it. Reminds me of the hot dog chili my grandma used to make. We would visit her in Chapmanville WVA, and one time she made this hot dog chili, so good I ate 6 hot dogs. I was about 13 back then, had a bottomless pit as a stomach! Thank you for sharing such an awesome recipe.
i use to live in Saint Albans West Virginia from 1978 to 1984 iI was a kid then but I really miss the great hot dog at the kids baseball game they were so good. I try to make them myself, but here in Belgium not easy to get the right stuff to do it but i got pretty close and love it each time, this video will help me even more thx
I was in West Virginia over 10 years ago & I never got this type of hotdog. I had lots of chicken pot pie & I had a turkey & bacon sandwich with cheese & on butter-soaked fried bread. I did have a hotdog at Snowshoe, but I don't think it was this filling. This Aussie loved chicken pot pies, oh they are delicious. I can't eat hotdogs anymore, so I'll never be able to enjoy this hotdog. Haven't been back to WV since. Last stops in the US for me was NY & CA. Had clam chowder in a bread bowl at Fisherman's Wharf in San Fran. I'd like to go back to WV, you all loved my Aussie accent, your people adored me. Hope to be there again, one day.
Braxton county born & raised here but been in PA the last three years. Omg I want one so bad, looks amazing. Nobody here has ever heard of a hot dog with chili and slaw!
Born in Charleston, WV moved to Georgia when I was 10! In my early childhood was this place called “Bowinkle” on the East End of Charleston My paw paw use to take me and my sister there for hot dawgs and shakes! That had the best hot dawgz ever!! Chilli slaw onions ketchup mustard that’s all I want
all my relatives are from WV, go eers! ‼ I live in Maine now and Maine is known for incredible fresh farm and sea food. But they're coleslaw is more like horse feed: huge long pieces of cabbage, onions, celery, seriously like something in a farm trough! Thanks for helping me recall grannies recipe! LUV YA!
I thought North Carolina was the only spot where you can find a hot dog with mustard chili onions and slaw... even though I love certain toppings at certain times the aforementioned toppings seem to make up the quintessential hotdog...your recipe is delicious...get u some brightleaf hotdogs though
Rode through WV on a motorcycle ride earlier this year and tried one of these. I love how every region has it's own hot dog tradition. These are now among my favorite, good to know they're not that hard to make.
I grew up in KY right across from Mingo County WV and we grew up on Hot Dogs. That chili recipe looks very similar to what we had. Most recipes I've had would break up the ground beef in plenty of cold water to where it looks like raw meat pudding, then heat, add spices and cook down. Very similar to yours. I don't recall slaw ever being standard on the hot dogs back home. Chili, mustard and onions. Also popular back home were the "Chili Buns.' Basically a hot dog without the weiner. The only place I've ever seen those offered! And they were delicious. Yours look great!
I'm 74. Legt when I was 10. Go back when I can. Will always love my hills of W V . This is a recipe my Mommy made for us every 2 weeks on a Friday payday. Yum
Oh how I love WV HOT DOGS AND WV tomatoes. I throw stuff together, too. I do live to cook. I add chili powder and 1 tsp of cumin. The tomatoes here in Mississippi don't have as much flavor as WV tomatoes.
@@ChefKristiThymetoCook years ago I was flying from Charleston to New Orleans, my seat partner had a peck basket of tomatoes. He was originally from WV and lived in Brownsville TX. I told him, I'd like a peck of WV hotdogs as well.
Thanks so much for your wonderful recipes! I was born in Montgomery so I grew up eating WV hotdogs. My favorite HD place was (and still is) Tom's in Oak Hill. I have fond memories of the Saturday church fundraisers too. 10 dogs all the way for $1. My family would get a couple of boxes worth and we'd wash them down with ice cold bottles of Pepsi. Always had a few left in the fridge on Sunday morning but not for long!
This York County, Pa resident got his first slaw dog in Burnsville at a convenience store stopping for gas on the way home. My next trip to the Glade Creek Mill we stopped on the way down and back getting 2 slaw dogs each way.
I'm 69 and from Dunbar, WV but have been gone from there for about 50 years...Every time I go home I have to order a Hot Dog with everything....just seems like the right way to eat them...I am sure gonna try your recipes here...Thanks for posting them
I'm from Mingo County WV, little town called Delbarton.... I grew up eating hotdogs with EVERYTHING LOL.. I ❤ them,,, thank you for making this video... God bless you ALL
I grew up in Ritchie County and the high school football games always had these. They are awesome! In NC now, they are good here but the WV ones are better and now I know the secret ingredients! Yay! Thanks!
We moved to Ohio when I was 6, but Mom taught me all the good stuff she knew, and a slaw dog was right up there at the top. Thanks for the chili recipe.
Your recipe popped up and I have to say that this one might be the winner. The other ones had way too much ketchup. lol Anyway, new subscriber here from NC! Looking forward to perusing all your other recipes.
We learned to love slaw dogs from a drive-in in Pineville W Va. called thePinecile drive-in IWe hope to go down in Oct and indulge. Up here we love our Ann’s foot longs in Glen Burnie Md. It to is a chili footlong. Yum 😅
Onions really add a nice ZING! to the flavor BUT, only use white onions as they have a bit of a bite to them...as opposed to using sweet onions, which easily gets lost in the other flavors. Hot dogs...I like Nathan's Famous as they have a wonderful flavor all unto themselves. Grilled, split open dogs are great...char-broil the inside of the dog, too!
Fairmont West By God Virginia here! Everybody raves over Yann's hot dogs. Never had one! Gotta love the chili slaw dogs in WV. My specialty besides these are WV pepperoni buns! Yum yum.
OMG! My parents moved north to Ohio for work before I was born, so I was born and raised here...my dad affectionately called us “buckbillies”! This still to this day is what I serve when my siblings come home! One of our all time favorite meals! Thanks for sharing it!❤️
I may live up here with the Yankees in Central Ohio but my roots are in Mingo County and that’s got my mouth watering for sure! Thank you for sharing your recipe. I’ll be firing up my smoker this weekend for sure! Stay healthy and all the best to you and yours! Semper Fi! ❤️
Hello from Preston county! We sometimes will deep fry dogs & let them split & bust open ( rippers), and they help hold the slaw on. Your recipe & your service to the mountain state are to be honored! Nobody, nobody puts ketchup on a hot dog!
My family is from WVA and I was born there. We moved to NC when I was little but hot dogs in our house always had chili, mustard, slaw, and onions. It’s not uncommon to get them “all the way” here but the slaw is pretty much all mayonnaise based. Your slaw is more like how my Mom made it...nice and tangy! Brought back memories watching this video!
This looks a lot like the hot dog chili from the Parkway, a drive-in in Logan, WV. Some of the best hot dogs anywhere come from the drive-ins in Logan.
You could never imagine the memories you have brought back to me!! Thank you so much for this wonderful video....and yes, there are no hot dogs in the world as good as the WV hot dogs.....and you did a great job showing how it's really done....Thank so, so much.....Love and hugs from High Chief Tupa'i Bruno of Samoa....(that's a long story!)....God bless you.Chef Kristi.....
I live in Fayette county, Oak Hill, WV. I make my hot dog chili with water in the raw hamburger as well. Makes it more like a crumble. Glad I found you on here. Where are you from in WV? Where are you a chef at?
I’m from Charleston. I got my chef certification through Carver Career Center in Belle. I was a caterer for several years until Covid now just a RU-vidr!
My parents are form Boone County WV they've served as missionaries for 45 years I was born and raised in Costa Rica but miss eating those WV hotdogs so much I've decided to make them here and share with everyone. I'll see how it goes.
Sis, you want to take it to the next level, grill the inside of the hotdog bun in a skilled with a little EVOO. 🤯my Mom used to grill the hot dogs, put them back in the bun and slide them back in the plastic bag right before we ate them then take them out and load them down with chili, slaw, onions, etc. Its steams the bun.
I love chili slaw dogs been looking for a good recipe this looks good gonna try it. without the hot sauce. although I love hot sauce I don't believe they had anything hot in the chili slaw dogs I had. Hint for the cabbage use a cheese grader large holes it makes for a better slaw. yuck didn't taste like any chili I ever had
People look at me so weird when I make hot dogs and put sauce and slaw on em lol Im like oh well this is the West Virginia then they try and are like oh this is amazing and Im like of course
This is considered " all the way" in NC as well. This is pretty much the only way I can eat my hot dog. Every now and then I will put hot sauce on it as well.
I’m a native North Carolinian from Roanoke Rapids in Halifax County. Standard there is mustard, finely chopped onions, Cole slaw and chili. The folks at Second Street Lunch call that “Full Dressed”. Stop there and treat yourself to a world class hot dog!
Oh My Gosh! Thank You so much for sharing this, Kristi. I have tried to make hot dog chili like you did, but didn't have all the spices I should have added. Now, I'll have it right! Woo Hoo! Also, I have always kind of played cole slaw by ear, too. Now I have a great recipe. Thank You. You ROCK!
When I wrote the comment above, I didn't realize I was commenting as Don! You know he wouldn't know where to begin to start making this recipe. He burned water a month ago. I think he was making Ramen noodles and I smelled something burning. It was my pot, but it wasn't ruined, thank goodness.
I don't understand. I've been eating chili dogs with slaw all my life in Tennessee and Georgia, and in my travels across America. The Varsity has always been known for them.
I am 72 years old and we have eaten hotdogs with mustard, chili, cold slaw, and onion….that’s call “all the way” where I lived. So No not a WV thing. I lived in Wheeling, WV for three years, and never once did anyone off me hotdog made that way, and if I ask they would say. “COLD SLAW”?? So not WV thing
Evidently, I salute W. Virginia 2-3 meals monthly. Who knew? Can't believe you ate that dog on camera. Etiquette is not allowed when I'm serving/eating hot dogs. Sloppier the better with stuff all over my mouth.
I grew up in Parkersburg! In 2007 my husband and I along with our 2 young adult children moved to Pennsylvania. Holy mother of Moses the culture shock is palatable....or should I say unpalatable. No flavor in anything. Even something as simple as making iced tea. You have to specify sweet or unsweetened. I have neighbors literally knocking on my door with glass in hand wanting my tea because I'm the only person they know that makes it juuuuust right. Not one single hot dog joint has slaw it's always kraut. We're working towards opening our own hot dog stand and we will have slaw...not kraut 💚
