@@kingpin6989 I have! I've lived in Japan for 20 years, so I have no idea what's on TV in America anymore, but some clips recently showed up in my newsfeed and I started watching and I was SO impressed with the writing. I thought: This reminds me of the writing on The West Wing! So I looked it up and sure enough: same folks.
I love how she quietly puts Tribbey on the defensive. This was a brilliant character and I was saddened to see her written out. I know it had something to do with her getting another role elsewhere, but it was still sad to see her leave.
Sorkin loves scenes when people speak truth to power. He did so many times in WW even made a whole movie out of it with American President. In this case that why even though Tribbey has a commanding prescence. She doesnt back down about the pinafore thing as tribial as it may be.
Ainsley Hayes: Is it so hard to believe in this day and age that someone would roll up their sleeves, set aside partisanship, and say "what can I do?" Oh poor, naive Ainsley. If you only knew the horror that the future holds.
Kudos to the script staff, and to whoever signs off on what they produce, for the Gilbert and Sullivan references, knowing full well that no more than 3% of Americans would know who G&S were, and 0.3% could differentiate between Penzance and Pinafore.
Not speaking in iambic pentameter!! The funniest line ever in existence. I literally burst out laughing, with a big baudy BAH HAHA, I sounded like someone out of G&S. Hee hee
A few years ago a friend at work called me in to ask for help with something and I had to look at her and ask, "Are you going to be speaking in iambic pentameter the rest of the day?" I watched her bob her head as she must have been repeating what she'd just said in her head followed by a long, "Fuuuuuuuuuuuuck." I responded, "I guess not then." And did a military turn to walk out of her office. Still mock her about that.
It's entirely possible to at least begin to form an accurate idea of a person's intellect based upon whether they thoroughly understand the nuances of and enjoy The West Wing.
The ending of this episode is amazing. After the worst first day she could have Ainsleyt comes into work and 'Toby Sam and Josh decorated her office with Gilbert and Sullivan and played He's an Englishman.
I miss Lionel. Oliver does a fine job later, and he was probably a better character to have in place during the MS debacle, but you have to wonder what judicious use of the cricket bat Lionel would have employed on staffers during the questioning.
I'd like to do well on this my first Assignment; any advice you could give Me that might point me the way of success Would be, by me, appreciated. With the exception of the nine-syllable first and last lines and a couple of emphasis issues, Ainsley's comment is, indeed in iambic pentameter. 😁
+spacyfoil - Yes, I miss that show. Also WKRP. Both great shows that took the road less taken. Also, check out Newsroom. It's another Aaron Sorkin creation that makes us think.
HMS Pinafore - they are all about Duty. Sentry Willis marries a Fairy Princess at the end of Iolanthe. When all night long a chap remains On sentry-go, to chase monotony He exercises of his brains, That is, assuming that he's got any. Though never nurtured in the lap Of luxury, yet I admonish you, I am an intellectual chap, And think of things that would astonish you. I often think it's comical--Fal, lal, la! @ramonalejandrosuare I think the point of the WW was it represented the idea of an ideal form of US government rather than a reflection of reality. An aspiration.
All these clips look really great and I'm thinking of giving this show a try. But is it worth it for people who don't really know that much about US politics?
unterbm, Yes it is worth it. There are numerous facts that are presented in many episodes of this series that have nothing to do with US politics but they do have something to do with the human condition all over the world. Funny one liners, tragic events that were made up just for the show, arguments about social interactions all over the world, and even a few love stories. If you can find the whole series on DVD anywhere start with season 1 and work your way through to season 7 when these people are finished with their second term. If you can only find individual seasons start with season 1 and then collect the others in numerical order as you can find them.
@grumpytosnowwhite It's funny, if you look at the first episode with Oliver Platt as Babbish (Bad Moon Rising), you can kinda hear that the dialogue was written for Larroquette. I guess they couldn't get him back for those episodes, but the written lines in Platt's first episode definitely sound more like they were meant for Tribbey, right down to the cricket bat smashing the Dictaphone (changed to a gavel for Babbish).
I think I've said this in other WW video comment areas but I'll say it here as well. If I could watch every episode EVER over the course of 1-3 months and type onto individual sheets of paper EVERY statement that ANYONE makes that gets me thinking about how insightful or argumentative that statement is in MY HEAD I could fill 200 pages or more from top to bottom. Hell, I could fill 5 pages alone with any 1 of 10 different episodes.
i'd *like* to *do* well *on* this *first* as- *sign* -ment an- *y* ad- *vice* you *might* give *me* that *might* point *me* the *way* of *suc* -ces *would* be *by* me appreciated it's not perfect, but it's pretty close!
@jokr8790 - yes, isn't this a great example of what we need now. Bipartisan solutions, compromise, with the result being a balanced budget, elimination of our deficit and restructuring of our banking and financial systems.
@@minggnim ...... Two things you should do ..... 1) Seek emergency mental help for disliking the incredible C.J. (( There's also Donna too that would rank above Ainsley )). 2) Learn how to spell "ridiculous". It shouldn't be that hard since I had just spelled it for you.
@@nashburnette7247 - Seek emergency mental help because I don't like a crappy character? Get a grasp on reality pal. It'z a dam pore mined thatt kan onlee thinck uv won way too spel ah wurd.
@@minggnim ...... Now you're calling C.J. a crappy character ?!?!?!? Forget the mental help I suggested. It would be a waste of time. You're just stupid. 😂🤣
And while you all foam at the mouth over yet another political discussion attempting to derail the point of this clip, no one mentions the JL fart when he turns to leave.
probably (and this is just a guess) nobody mentions it bc that didn't happen. but that's just a guess. (what a fucking weird fiction bullshit. at the very least, bc he "turns to leave" three times. what the fuck is your weird agenda that would prompt you to write such nonsense?)
Of all the female characters on the West Wing. This was the only one I had a sizeable, crush on. Smart, strong, emotional, mega-feminine and very pretty. If they ever perfect, female androids? I want her personality for mine.
