Western Digital hard drive PCB BIOS IC swap

In this video I show how I take a BIOS IC and swap it from a bad control board to a new control board. If you are not comfortable with soldering, don't try it. You could corrupt the data on the chip and render the chip useless. This video is intended as entertainment, so if you brick your hard drive I'm not taking the blame. Have a good one.

GOod afternoon, hope be well, i have an HDD of 320 Wester digital caviar blue, at work i have one broken with the exact same board part. My HDD is recognized by the motherboard, but i cannot get access to the data or info of partitions and disk capacity, If i do the change of the board can i get back the info stored? if i disconnect the disk suddenly appears the capacity used but of course i cannot access.

Hello there, I'm working on a WD320BPVT-75JJ5T0 that was in a dropped laptop. It was unable to read/initialize. I swapped the head from a WD320BPVT-24JJ5T0 to it and it was able to show the Dell Recovery volume but was not able to pull any data off or initialize/mount it any further. Is there a step I'm missing that would help get it to initialize or maybe the replacement head needs to be from a similar -75JJ5T0 model? or need to possibly Hot swap PCB? Thanks.

I'm going to attempt to do this to save a hard drive. I wonder how important is the size of the nozzle in the heat gun? I've bought a heat gun from amazon and the only nozzle it has is 9mm diameter. From your video it looks like the nozzle you used was smaller than that.

Not super critical, I would put more effort in where you aim the nozzle. You could totally do it with a 9mm.

How do you know when hard drive failure is PCB failure or internal failure? I have seen videos where clicking hard drives ended up being a PCB failure, but everyone says clicking is always an internal/mechanical failure.
@optimizelogicrepair2784
@optimizelogicrepair2784 4 месяца назад
Typically when components fail on the control board, the hard drive will not spin up or do anything at all, because the power has been cut to a certain area. If the TVS diode fails , there will not be power getting anywhere as they are designed to fail to protect the board, kind of like a fuse. Clicking is the sound coming from the heads, they are sweeping back and forth rapidly because they are searching for the place they left off sometimes because of a drop.

No you cannot simply swap boards. The BIOS holds everything for the drive, like Serial number, head and sector info, Read/Write cycles and drive health. You must transfer the BIOS chip to donor from patient, or copy BIOS from patient and write to donor.

Hello, if you are saying the hard drive will power on with a replacement board, then yes if you solder the BIOS IC to the replacement board I would say you have a pretty solid chance at getting your data back. If you have basic solder skills it should be pretty easy. Just make doubly sure that you know what you are doing as you could turn an easily repairable drive into a paperweight.

@optimizelogicrepair2784
@optimizelogicrepair2784 Год назад
Was it dropped? typically drives that are candidates for chip swap do not work at all. Sometimes there is a diode that goes bad, sometimes the main motor controller. Start and stop humming could be a few things, like bearings, head misalignments, etc. First thing you could do is download a free app called crystal disk info. Then you can scan the drive. If issues are detected, it should give you an idea. If it has bad sectors, I'm afraid that is probably where DIY ends and I would recommend sending it out if data is critical.
