Even if His Holiness didn't directly address those big and deep questions the panel asked, his speaking was very inspiring and encouraging us to think from some very interesting perspectives

We cannot compare modern science and ancient Buddhism, but it is certain that the foundational rocks of science like positivism and empiricism exist in Buddhism. Now many historians accept that science has non-Greek roots. Even Greek philosophers were heavily influenced by India.
It's intruguing, but debatable. Egypt and Sumer were applying science and complex mathematics long before any Indian civilization - or any other, anywhere - existed. Greek philosophy had already come up with most of the foundational precepts of modern science by about 500 BC. Before Alexander's conquests, communication between India and Greece had to pass through the Achaemenid Empire. A lot was lost in translation, literally and figuratively. Certainly, after Alexander, the influence of Indian culture on the West becomes much greater, although the same also applies in reverse. E.g. the first actual statues of the Buddha, the most-depicted person in statuary of all time, were done by Greek sculptors and bear distinctive Greek influence. Greek military tactics were copied by Indians and led to the rise of the Mauryan Empire. And so on. What's most interesting to me is the potential effect of Buddhism on Christianity. Jesus has a number of koan-like sayings "If a man is to gain his life he must first lose it" etc. which don't appear in religions other than those two. It has been speculated that that Buddhist monks travelled to the Near East centuries after Alexander and influenced the rise of Christianity there. There are legends that Jesus spent part of his undocumented adolescence and early adulthood being trained as a yogi in the Himalayas. Stranger things happened - and what was Christianity if not one of the most bizarre and unpredictable occurrences in history - but I don't know how much stock to put in those stories.

And you know the seven Greek sages were from Ionia ( Turkey) not from the main land Greeks. There are several books and PhD thesis on this. Yes, Egyptian and Sumerian are very old civilizations like Indus Valley civilization. But they lack the two qualities that I have mentioned. If we count the contributions of the old civilizations to the sciences, then we also should count the contributions of early Homo Erectus who gave many things. And, you should rethink, Indians might have or vice versa knew the Greeks much before than Persian Empire. Indian trades were very archaic to the Mesopotamia and Egypt, at least from 3rd millennium BC. The picture is very big and fuzzy that I can't demonstrate here , I can just hint you further studies. I have also problem of historicity and authenticity of the both Ancient Greek and Indian textual archives.
@@RLekhy The Buddha is traditionally dated to between ~560 BC-480 BC, so you're off by a century, and modern historians date him to between 480-400 BC, so you're off by two. And he didn't start teaching until he was 35, so that means even in the traditional accounts, 525 BC was the earliest anyone at all could have heard his teachings. Which again, is about the same time as the early Greek scientists and philosophers. No, there is no evidence that Ancient India influenced Ancient Greece prior to Alexander. There just isn't. There was trade, passing through the Persian Empire and empires before that, but some trade goods ending up in Ancient Greece is not the same as manuscripts and scientific knowledge.

B.Leaky: Maybe some positive and empirical aspects in Buddhism, but isn't the main nature of both their being dependently arisen. When the dependently arisen cause of self cherishing views are non-occurring, then inherently and independently existing self-nature's elimination shifts the object of attention from the inside (on self), to the outside - in the awareness of generating pleasant feelings as a cause of (others') long lasting happiness via right view, etc.. Sure some positive and empirical elements of experience, but at a point, valid inference of long term mental, bodily and linguistic happiness as a designated construction can not stand independently. Why couldn't one see the Socratic method as part and parcel of analytical meditation, as well as a method for step -by step scientific investigation, beyond postulating the means of investigation in association with the goal as form and function of the good? Clearly, there are all kinds of creative possibilities.
The biggest humanity quest is to understand what is the universe. Why do life existed ? There is a high probability the universe existed becos of consciousness. The universe has strong linkage to consciousness which QM (Quantum Mechanics) suggested. What is interesting is, how the heck did the eastern world that was 5000 years ago can have such an insight that only now (about 100 years ago) QM science begins to show strong linkage to our existence and the universe itself. My curiosity or interest is not towards any religion but to understand why life existed. Doesn't matter what religion that is, as I think if there is a God, he would not be interested in what religion you are in but in what action you do during your life time. If there is God, he would be universal and not only to planet earth as there is highly likely there are life elsewhere in the universe.

Intention, that which motivates the inquiry, is everything. Changing the way that we observe changes our observations.
